as a Vietnamese, I think we SEAsian nations fighting or competing over a few hundred USD of GDP per capita is ridiculous. Just look at European nations, the gaps between them could be several thousands of USD in GDP per capita. So the fact is, Philippines and Vietnam levels of development are pretty close to each other. It is more important that we built a developed region like Europe, not staying here, feeling better than each other over a several hundred USD of income. The advantage of the Philippines is service and a pretty high value currency. I think Philippines should follow the path of Panama or Irelands, becoming a regional headquarters hub or banks hub, but not manufacturing lịke Vietnam.

Do you wonder why? Vietnam labor is more skilled. They have surplus energy generation while Philippines barely have enough to prevent total blackout. Intel left the Philippines and went Vietnam. Every country needs FDI even the US. Its FDI that made what is China now. Philippines need to improve infra and labor skills to attract more FDI. BPO will not sustain longterm.

Not sure if it's true but I heard one of the main reasons why the Philippines's manufacturing sector is underdeveloped compared to its neighbours is due to the high electrical cost of the country. The Philippine government has been actively diversifying the economy to reduce reliance on a few sectors. This includes investments in energy, particularly renewable sources and exploring the potential of nuclear power; manufacturing, such as automotive and electronics; technology, including IT-BPO and startups; and infrastructure development, focusing on transportation and digital connectivity. These efforts aim to create a more balanced and resilient economy, capable of withstanding global economic shocks and promoting sustainable long-term growth.

it also boils down to religion. india is a conservative country, poor people, or those with disabilities are being marginalized under religions caste system...india has about 30 million gods to whom they have to consult each step of the way....for example its kinda silly but there are still households in india that don't have toilets in their homes, that when they have to evacuate they have to go back to their backyards to squat to which results in intestinal diseases and death, because religions forbids them so....the backward culture and religious beliefs are what's holding india to development and progress, they simply don't value time as "gold" and are contented to live by the day. with such sick culture, it stagnated the entire country, failing miserably in mass education, science and hard work that equals progress through individuality, hoped with the internet and technology moving forward people would mature and develop, india has a great potential but i am looking at it like 50 years down the road.
