Zelenka was then also seen by Phoebus,
who rightly praised him as follows:
You most highly praised, perfect VIRTUOS,
Your self-gained fame is world-renowned and great;
You can for the Glory of God, delight the Soul,
and movingly compose Church music,
which is so touching, that the devotional Breast
already experiences the Foretaste of Pleasures of Heavens;
Therefore Your Praise will blossom according to your Name,
Both here on Earth and on the stage of the Stars.

ZELENKA | Mottetto â Contralto solo | O magnum Mysterium, ZWV 171. {Partial autograph} 1728
#jan #dismas #zelenka #score #sheetmusic #zwv #171
Partial autograph score of Zelenka's beautiful Alto motet "O magnum mysterium". /Z. 171/, derived from his aria "Reviresce, effloresce" in the melodrama, "Sub olea pacis" /Z. 175/, this piece was composed 1728 which Zelenka added two flutes, two recorders and bassoon. The inclusion of these instruments /whose performance materials are kept within the set of sixteen parts held in Dresden today/, together with the simplicity of the vocal part, as well as episodes of bass drones, provide some of the pastoral elements that characterize the motets heard at Christmas.
Performed in Dresden's Catholic court church on Christmas Day 1729, and as the titled implies, is a Christmas cantata, and on the 25th of December of that year, the Diarum Missionis of the Dresden Jesuits recorded that at 11:00 Zelenka provided the music for the occasion, presumably this very motet.

Technically perfect, keen in ornament, contextual change of tempo and rhythmic patterns, with dissonance on top of the phrase climax going in unexpected direction - all of this from no less genius and master than the Golden League of Bach-Vivaldi-Handel like! Appreciate very much the male voice in this. There's a different quality to a piece done by a male voice, which would be authentic. And WOW a close-up view of Z's handwriting.
Actually the copyist "Johann George Kremmler" 's handwriting, the parts in Z's hand are for 'vl 1, fl 1, 2' I didn't include them since the score-video uses mostly the voice part, and I combine the 1st and 2nd violins near the end and wanted it to be consistent

Una pregunta alguien me podría decir como se llama los violagambistas en Inegal?
It's crazy how underrated this composer is.
If this music is 1 hour in total once performed, this means the mass service including the actual rites. Readings and sermon of the priest would total to 2 or 3 hours? Meaning, once upon a time during baroque period, people spends so much time in church for one mass. Compared to now, where priests are often rushing and limiting the mass duration to 1 hour. So mass songs are also limited to 3-7 minutes each.
I am wondering why Kyrie is always so grand and happy, it is supposed to be mellow, right? Because you it is asking God's mercy? I wonnder why Zelenka sort of deliberately disregarded the text's affect. At least in this Mass, the Christe eleison starts mellow and remains in the mood longer. His other masses starts with Kyrie almost as grand as the vibes in the following Gloria. Thank you so much for all these uploads with the scores! Making the listening experience really educational.
Zelenka s trio sonatas are beauty itself

He really is like a Guru, his works have a learning quality.
The opening movement of the Gloria (7:54) and the setting of _Cum sancti spiritu_ (35:17) at the end of the Gloria surely count as some of the very best settings of these words. I had the great fortune to attend a concert including this work, performed by Ensemble Inegal (one of the great champions of Zelenka) and directed by Frieder Bernius. It was in a church in Prague. In the Gloria they took a tempo rather faster than what's in this recording here. That's the only time in my life when I've had to hold on to a church pew for dear life. It made me think of the poor shepherds who attended the very first performance of this text. Sadly that music is lost, but Zelenka did a fine job in producing something which comes close in terms of being both terrifying and spiritually exhilarating!

The way the voices and instrument merge is otherworldly.
Marking it for learning some simple things.
Ahead of times work ! It's almost Classical Style. Wonder what period it was written.
1740 - one his last three mass settings, and among the greatest ever written, better than Bach's recycled Mass in B Minor I think. More creative, original and interesting.
Thank you for the reply! 1740 means Haydn was only a child , and we can already hear Galant Style in the first movement. Very Shocking.
