Elgar twice as technical as Haydn 1, Dvorak same as Prokofiev, do you play the cello?
The coda from 1st movement of Beethoven's Op 74 is missing. That is a real Holy *&^) moment.
Very good list, especially like that they're ordered in a way that is nice to listen to!
Nice touch on Dvorak concerto adding the ever forgotten adendum of "No. 2" lol. Important cello lore
Saint-Saens first concerto is one of the most played in the repertoire, definitely not a 3 in popularity. His second concerto maybe
Unfortunately, not a single one stands up to the top 10 violin concertos
This is very enjoyable but the snobbish commentary is disappointing.
The greatest chamber 'moment' for me is in the Mendelssohn Octet, towards the end of the 1st mvt ... different genre, of course.
Farewell, Emerson

Dvorak's Concerto is the most famous? Sad
I have a soft spot for Honneger's Cello Concerto, but i can live with a list like this. Haven't heard Prokofiev and Barber. The rest, certainly!
Just to clarify: The Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante excerpt, that's shown in the first clip, is the Cadenza from the second movement, not first movement unfortunately. These little mistakes happen! It is my favourite piece and I am learning the first movement so I'm pretty quick at spotting these things, especially because it's so underrated. So when it does appear in media, I get super excited! Great vid btw!
You're right. Thanks for the clarification. Good luck learning that monster of a piece!

Maybe Britten 1st suite last movement, Barber cello concerto or shostakovich 2. concerto?
I'm aware of the barber and Shostakovich being really difficult! I just haven't listened to them all that much to know what specific passages are the hardest.
Maybe you should actually explain *why* they're hard for non-cellists or indeed even cellists who don't know the works...ffs.
I think it’s not really hard to understand the reason why they are hard, except if it doesn’t come to your attention that these excerpts (and not passages) seem to require high technical skill in order to perform it at such tempo and good intonation to play the right notes. In general lines all the excerpts demand these things. To get into details about what makes it difficult apart from those is unnecessary except for the fact that some annoying people think are exceptionally experts and assume the role of criticising a video, that it’s purpose isn’t to be a dissertation, in a disrespectful and disdainful manner as if they find it really stupid. However these people usually have a problem with themselves and lack manners so they are to be ignored.
@trevi8960 anything that is posted online and open to being commented on is open for criticism as well. There is no doubt there are non-cellists (or even string players for that matter) who may not understand technical challenges on the cello. TwoSet Violin are a great example of utter ignorance to difficulties outside their instrument and there is little doubt people may want to know what makes something so challenging. Not to mention something can sound very easy and make people wonder why it is regarded as difficult. So pipe the f*** down.
@@chrisoconnor9521 If you keep swearing and using foul language, no one will take your comments or criticism seriously. Why the need to use such language? Did you have a bad day?
My unpopular suggestions are some of Bottermund/Paganini variations and Cossman/Schubert Erlkönig
Sorry if I missed any obvious ones! I tried my best with online research. Please leave your suggestions in the comment section!
This list must entirely focus only on Beethoven's works. All the rest are not relevant by comparison.
3:00 Mendelssohn is too frinkin hard to be the first concerto that students play 💀.
Fantastic choices.
There's an easy way to figure out the bonus, but it's cheating. Can anyone guess the method?
Hoje come there is no bartok?!?!!?
The new edition of Budapest string quartet.
This video and the accompanying comments are valuable to me. There is so much great music out there. I appreciate some guidance.
The bonus was Dvorak.
Odd selection.
Cuando faltaba el número uno y faltaba por mencionar a Dvorak era mas qué obvio 😅
Good list! All these commenters presenting their favorites, demanding explanations, etc. are entirely missing the point. Make your own videos. Good grief.
we're not all video-adept
It's all subjective but my top 10 would be: 1. Haydn Fantasia 2. Mozart Prussian No 22 slow movement 3. Beethoven Finale of 3rd Opus 59 4. Schubert Death & The Maiden 5. Mendelssohn Canzonetta 6. Smetana Any Part of his first quartet 7. Borodin slow movement 8. Tchaikovsky slow movement 9. Dvorak American final movement 10. Shostakovich No 8
What exactly is this Haydn Fantasia? Cheers.
The slow movement of Opus 76 No 6 in E flat
@@paulwl3159 Thanks! The Finale Allegro Spirituoso is also stunning. My favourite overall though is probably 55 No.1.
Man, yeah, that Beethoven...
You put 10 in Edgar's concert popularity, but his and barber's are the ones I've never heard...
Delius is marvellous too.
I loved it❤ can you make one video with female representations 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The people in the comment section are a bit wild tbh. Just calm down❤
I believe that Beethoven's Triple Concerto deserves at least an honorable mention (I know it doesn't really fit in within the criteria, but the solo cello line is known for its particularly virtuosity).
I think some people are missing the point of this list. This doesn’t claim to be a list of the greatest string quartets ever. It’s not even supposed to represent the greatest movement, only a great moment within a string quartet. I think some of the examples are quite good. Sure, the grosse fuge is amazing, but there is no moment within it that can rival the example of the opus 132 in the video. The Barber quartet, as wonderful as it is, probably doesn’t belong in a top ten list of greatest string quartets. The moment used in the video is pretty damn good though and arguably could qualify for a lot of people if you are just referencing a moment within a quartet. It’s all subjective. No list like this one will make everyone agree.
Where is Mozart? At the very least the Dissonanz…. You put Barber before Schubert?
Nomos alpha!
Any list that includes Shostakovich is total nonsense.
Why?
@@darrig Shostakovich is appalling!
@@soutteruk1Shostakovich made beautiful music, full of emotion.
@@BluffImpala2 No he didn't!
@@soutteruk1 then you clearly don't know shostakovich or what he went through
dumbest list coming from a cellist lol, what a joke. elgar popularity being 10 where dvorak is 8 LOL give me a break
A better Dover/Barber: th-cam.com/video/XmnstnZnSDw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=44TQbyDANmTp0D7l
I think Elgar cello conserto is obviously more famous than Dvorak( even tho Dvorak is goated)
En mi opinión falta la la coda (o todo el movimiento completo) del 7mo movimiento del op. 131 de Beethoven.
no brahms,what a disaster~~
Any list of 'greatest string quartet moments' that ignores the Grosse Fuge is automatically invalid.
I agree
As much as players love the piece, most audience members respect the design and difficulty of the work but don't love hearing it.
to whom?
nice list. I only miss one concerto from Bccherini. Probably No. 9 in b flat. Boccherini is probably easy to oversee because his concerts aren't that "shining". Also there are a lot of them cause he was a Cellist. But nevertheless, he has probablably the biggest lifetime contribution to the cellist artwork.
Schumann’s should be no 1 End of the story
I would be willing to dedicate myself to playing the Shostakovich cello concerto. It's thrilling.
Hmm. No Haydn - the Father of the String Quartet? No Mozart? Mendelssohn over Schubert? I am not arguing some great moments have been picked - but almost nobody plays Barber's String Quartet anymore (only the arrangement of the Adagio for String Orchestra), and the Grieg String Quartet, whilst excellent, isn't a patch on any of Dvorak's last 5 String Quartets; plus Smetena's Ma Vlast? What a heart-wrenching moment where his deafness kicks in - surely one of the greatest moments ever in music let alone String Quartet? Please understand - I didn't expect my favourite moments to be picked. That would be dull!! So I am not complaining (bizarrely) - just thought you might explain your logic and reasoning within the video - after all, all our tastes and experiences are different. Then you might win me over! ;-)
Maybe my title was a bit clickbait... Its impossible to objectively find the 10 greatest string quartet moments. I will definitely take a listen to the pieces you mentioned!
@@tenorclef418 I accept the clickbait - we don't use the Internet without expecting it. Enjoy widening your String Quartet experiences. Repurposing your video to perhaps become an introduction as to why String Quartets are awesome? Or stick with it - after all - opinion is subjective and who am I to say my opinion counts more than yours (it doesn't!)! Perhaps these are indeed the 10 greatest moments for the majority of people? ;-)
@@schubertukI think with smetana, you are talking about Má vlast, but the thing you mean is his quartet "Z mého života"
@@duryi6399 You are spot on, my error! I did indeed mean the "From My Life" String Quartet.
A later video of the Barber shows a much matured sound from The Dover Quartet, posted by Brooklyn Classical.
