In my opinion when you’re just starting and don’t yet have a portfolio, it’s worth considering offering a few free sessions to build experience and showcase your work. Free sessions allow you to experiment, develop confidence, and create a diverse portfolio that will help attract paying clients in the future. Once you’ve gained some experience and have a few examples of your work, you can transition into charging modest rates. Many beginner photographers start with a range of $50-$150 per session, which helps cover basic costs (like time, editing, and equipment) while remaining affordable for potential clients. This approach balances building your skills and establishing the value of your work as you grow.

While Auto ISO can be convenient in certain situations, for night photography, I usually shoot in manual ISO for better control over noise and exposure. A few weeks ago, @mariuszh4611 clarified that increasing ISO doesn’t allow more light to reach the sensor; instead, it amplifies the signal from the light already captured. That sounds like a cool project! Shooting at night with flashlights can definitely create an awesome vibe. A few quick tips: use a tripod to keep your shots steady, especially for long exposures. Play with the flashlight to create shadows or partially light your subject for a mysterious effect. Long exposures can make cool light trails if the flashlight moves. Keep your ISO high enough to capture enough light but not so high that noise becomes a problem. You might want to bring a small portable light to fill in shadows if needed without overpowering the flashlight. Experiment with low angles or shooting through bushes for that “in the wilderness” look. In editing, you could use cooler tones or muted greens to give it that nighttime hunting vibe. That’s a great solution! Shooting in both JPEG and RAW gives you so much versatility. You get the convenience of ready-to-use JPEGs with your preferred B&W look, while the RAW files act as a safety net in case you want to experiment with editing later or need a color version. It’s definitely the best of both worlds and keeps your options open!
