I read below using Lift 4 efoils.. You mentioned folding props, so the motor is 100% off when riding the rolling swells? Just curious if it can be done. Thanks!
Yes! Absolutely correct! Using the folding prop, surfing waves, wakes, and swells are the best way to enjoy the Lift efoil, IMHO. Check out my folding prop tutorial... th-cam.com/video/1uqSo4m8di8/w-d-xo.html
This guy is so smooth
Mahalo for the compliments. Donovan and I had fun making this video. We probably should add the next 5 mistakes too.
Sharks?
Sharks live in the ocean, we are just visiting. We encounter them every now and then, but have never had issues. Aloha
doing it wrong. shouldnt have to pump in the wake
Hope every new students watch this video, lots of great tips for sure.
Mahalo for the endorsement. We try to help everyone we can to learn how to safely ride the efoil.

Excellent tips really good! Thanks
Excellent tips and efoil learning! Thanks mahalo

We've been struggling all season. Gonna try this method next time there's no wind
Enjoy the wind while yo have it, and go efoiling when the wind is gone. What a perfect situation. We had a non-student comment about a week ago (@lucasberiofortini) that they learned how to efoil using this and some of our other videos. We met up with Lucas after his first efoil session (self-taught with our videos), and he couldn't stop thanking us for the steps in our videos. He looked really good on his board, and he couldn't stop smiling!! We hope you have similar success! Aloha
@@hawaiiefoil Well, I'm an Old School Gorge extreme windsurfer now kiter living on the largest reservoir on the Missouri River and usually our wind comes in streaks. We kited 4 days this week and more windy days progged for next few days. Hoping for a chance to test your method. Will let you know how it goes. Myelinating neurons is the actual mechanism. Kotler writes about it...
Thanks for the refresher Alika and Donovan! Board just arrived today. Dying for the battery to ship. That’s just a little cruel having that come separate and not even shipped when the board comes. Kinda like giving a kid a new bicycle with flat tires and tell him soon, but we don’t know when, the pump with come and then you can ride it. Still super psyched!
Aloha Brian! Congrats! Were you able to use our Lift discount code on your board purchase? Sorry about the battery; it comes from an outside vendor. You should have received notice of delivery. We know exactly what you mean... oh the torture! Please reach out if you have any questions at all. If you didn't get the discount, let us know. We can fix that. Aloha.
@@hawaiiefoil Hey Alika, sorry but used Tom's discount code to order. If there is a way to put in a good word with them to at least share reputation credit with you, let me know. Tom and I have had a long thread going with me asking him tons of questions so figured I should just use his. Thanks much!
What a shame about the audio. Oh well it happens. Blessings🙏
Hi Alika, I hope you can help me with some size problems for my new efoil board. On this moment a have a 111L board, and its easy to rode. But I want 2 go more into carving and that kind of stuff. So I want 2 go smaller with the board. What is the smallest board that I can get into with 86 kg (190 pound) and still be able to waterstart but have al the + features of having a small board? Some say a 85Liter board is the smallest I should go 2, but what is your experience? Thanks for your help, Ronald from the Netherlands.
Aloha Ronald! Great question. With your efoil, you have TONS of power, so you don't need a large board; you just need enough forward movement to create stability. At 190lbs, you can literally ride the smallest board on the market, which is 4'2" from Lift, and 4'4" from Flite. The difficulty with smaller boards is that the board responds to your weight shifting very quickly as it is much smaller than you. With enough speed, and proper use of your body weight, you should practice skimming the board on your belly, then hands and knees, and back to your belly. When you can keep the board level in transition, then try to get to your feet. The issue is your control of your weight so you don't sink or skyrocket the nose as you transition to your feet. My advice is to go as slow as you can, while still achieving stability by accelerating the board. Once you are standing up, it is simple to accelerate to your desired speed. I hope this helps. Aloha.
Thanks Alika! I am now flying because of you!
Super useful tips! Alika is a great instructor in person as well! Super knowledgeable, friendly and approachable! 10/10 recommend!
If you can't tell by our videos, you should definitely figure out face-to-face that we love to foil, and we love to teach others even more. Get out on the water if you have access! The ocean will solve all of your problems... for a little bit anyway. Aloha
Alika's method to learn to efoil is better than anything I have seen out there! Watch all of his instructional videos and you will be on the foil in no time!
Mahalo Lucas for endorsing our training method. We love seeing how quickly you picked up on the foiling fundamentals just by working through the steps in our lesson plan. Keep up the good work! Aloha
Wow 🔥I wish I watched this video before I started efoiling. I was ready to quit this sport. I watched your video last night and implemented everything today - and I was flying high the whole time. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the only video beginners need 😊
@@the_heart_follower Mahalo for your kind words. We love sharing foiling with everyone. Have a blast on your Efoil and share this amazing sport your closest friends. Aloha!
These are great tips. Thank you for the excellent videos.
Excellent tutorial. Pay attention to everything. Foot placement. How to rise on your feet without losing your balance (stay in the same axis). Pay special attention to the hip movements you barely see. Again, great video. 73 years old, from France
Mahalo for your kind words. We try to make it easier for EVERYONE to learn to efoil. Aloha
Great video & info…. On turning w shoulder i cant tell if Donovan is TILTING the shoulder in the turn direction or TURNING/ROTATING the upper half of the body at the waist towards the turn direction….Which is it..????…..the concept & action ???. HELP ?
Aloha! The turning of a foil board is a bit different than you expect because the control surface is 3 feet underwater on the foil, not the rail and tail of the board. So you need to use your entire body, not just your feet. In this video, we talk about rolling your shoulder like an airplane or bird to the side you want to turn towards. A better way that we now use is "Look & Lean". Look where you want to go, and let your body fall toward that look. The trick is to keep your body stacked properly... head over shoulders over hips over feet without bending at the waist (common error). Bending at your waist is incorrect because your head and shoulders will go towards one side of the board while your hips go towards the other side (trying to maintain balance). On land, it should feel like your are falling as pressure builds in your heels or toes. Try it and tell us what you think. Mahalo. Alika
For me, I had to think turn with my hips instead of shoulders. I think it ended up meaning the same thing, but thinking hips made it easier for me, Great vid. I love that you showed both the problems and the solutions. What brand of foil is Donovan riding? Size and wings? Thx
You are correct! The hips are where the control is for both roll control and pitch control. Donovan is on a Lift3 4'9" with something underneath. The foil doesn't matter for Donovan as he can ride anything. He is only 130 lbs, standing 6ft tall. Your foil choice should match your weight, experience level, and riding conditions. Flat water riding is less challenging than ocean wave riding. Let us know if you need help selecting the best foil for you. Aloha! Alika
Random but iv found a beautiful ufo in ur video! Go to the vid( 5 steps how to efoil) time is just after 7.40 top right (not necessary but slow it down to 0.25 for a better view) this tic tac ufo shoots out of the cloud but the strange thing is that it cant be spotted before the cloud which has clear sky before it then the cloud and the one in front seem to get pieces pulled toward the ufo anyways let me know what you think 😊
Thank you, very helpful greetings from Germany
I crashed 38 times in my first lesson with no ground training. But your instruction gives me hope. Now I know how to turn and hopefully catch by balance. You are the best teacher I've found on youtube. Thanks Bro!
We go through this will every student that visits us. We are considering an online course. Would you sign up for such a course? Would you pay a small subscription fee to have us work with you through the year to get you up and riding smoothly? Let us know how we can help you (and many others) learn to efoil better. Mahalo.
Very helpful. Thank you!
You are welcome!
Great video - well explained and demonstrated - thank you!! 👍
We hope it helps you to enjoy your efoiling time this summer
Very helpful video, thanks!
Many people like you across the globe are loving this video as it helps them to avoid mistakes... or learn from them. Aloha
I was on my Lift for the first time this summer today! Loved it! My 3d season. Hope to learn to wing foil this year.
Efoiling is the easiest way to get into foiling in general. Now that you have the foiling part down, you just need to learn how to "sail" with a wing. If you have kiting or sailing experience, that helps. If not, find a friend who can help you to catch the wind with your sail. One other tip... GO BIG! Big board, Big foil, Big wing. That way you can actually stand on the board and have a chance of catching the wind. Good luck winging and enjoy the efoil when the wing foil kicks your butt.
these cost more than a jetski, insane price for a few 2x4s and a motor
You're correct that these efoils are expensive. Jet skis cost $7k - $22k according a quick Google search while Efoils cost $7k - $15k. They are not in the same category by a long shot, but each definitely provide fun on the water. You clearly don't have a grasp of the construction of either the efoil or the jet ski. The last time I saw a few 2x4 motoring at 20-60 mph on the water, they were strapped to a hobie cat, and the weathered plywood decking was losing its red paint. Each to his own. Aloha.
What a fantastic video, thanks for taking the time to share.
Amazing 😍
Thanks 🤗
Спасибо друг. пятый совет оказался очень важным для меня. Семь футов под фойлом!
Всегда пожалуйста. Я рад, что вы смогли применить эти шаги, чтобы избежать распространенных ошибок при работе с фольгой. Алоха.
Awesome!
We take a ride as a group every month. This one was challenging with all the waves bouncing off the island, creating a washing machine effect for us.
We made it all the way to Hanauma! Killer video Alika
That was fun. We should find more challenges through the summer.
Question? Is a permit required to efoil on the ocean
Aloha. In Hawaii, a permit is NOT required to ride an efoil on the ocean. As efoils are classified as vessels, Hawaii requires that you register your efoil with DOBOR, DLNR. A boat safety course is also recommended by DOBOR, but not required.
The take-off and landing are only a matter if hips move ? I thought the trigger had a rôle
Touch 'n Go is how we teach students to learn to control the pitch of the foil and board. The trigger can also affect this as it controls the speed and therefore the lift generated by the foil. It is WAY EASIER to fix your speed, and then use your hips to control the nose attitude up/down.
Amazing and super helpful video! Heading to the beach to apply all
I hope you are able to incorporate our steps into your learning to make your foiling easier.
Thank you.
what size board are you using the 100litre or 67 pro model
When learning to foil, we recommend you start with a larger board. Our students are placed onto a 5'9" or 5'4" efoil board that have 105L and 88L respectively. The liters are not as important since you have a motor. In this video, our demonstrator is on a smaller board, the 4'9" which is 70L.
@@hawaiiefoil thanks,, I am learning on the 100 litre,, hopefully, I can go down to the pro model eventually that is 67 litres
@@SteveHofsaess 100L boards are very forgiving and a good place to learn. But smaller boards aren't always better. You may find it more enjoyable to change foils rather than changing boards. Plus it is way cheaper to change a $1000 foil rather than a $12,000 board.
I rode a Flight board on Maui recently and the whine of that thing was terrible. I am coming to Oahu in early May for my daughter's graduation and I am looking to book a session with you folks while I am there. Stay tune and look for me.
Aloha @bduerr5082, I know what you mean by whine. Flite has beautiful boards, and great engineering, but the whine kills me. The Lift efoil has always been the quietest on the market, but then Lift stepped it up with their QRT tech that was released with the Lift4, and cut the sound and vibration in half. Come check us out in May! We will take good care of you. Mahalo.
nice

Nice, wish I could be there to share it.
Next time!
Golden. Thanks!
…bitchin..
I would HIGHLY suggest keep you and your crew out of that cove. Best stay away from the Westside. So disappointing and disrespectful DISLIKE 👎
Aloha @samp873. We have spoken to da hui at Makaha, and they politely requested that we NOT foil at Makaha. We have respected their wishes as far as I know. As for riding from Poka'i to Lahilahi, we have been nothing but respectful of the space we are in, just like any local surfer would be. Plenty of distance between us and any surfer, swimmer, paddler, nai'a, honu, etc. We value our ocean resources, and remain grateful to ke Akua for all that is provided. Mahalo.
We are always respectful of others in the water, like my papa taught us when we were kids.
Lucky dogs!!
