In this episode, I take you inside my drilling routine as I focus on the skills and strategies that will help me compete at a higher level. From perfecting third-shot drops to dialing in kitchen exchanges and serve accuracy, I’m putting in the work to climb closer to that 5.5 DUPR goal.

Thanks for posting. Very humble of you to post this video. Lots to learn from here. I’m looking forward to following your journey.
Great match. Your opponents were very tough-- battling for every point. Looking forward to following along.
Always do the dink game during drills (mini skinny). And then love the mindset of using rec games or recent tournaments to learn what I need to work on and then start drilling those skills. Goal is to get incrementally better every single day.
Absolutely, while others are settling we are out here working 💪
Do you have a ball machine? They're super good for drilling a shot until you have it down👌
Theres one at the picklr that I can use but I find it’s easier to just use a drilling partner then spend time setting up each drill. It’s very beneficial if you don’t have someone on your schedule to drill with for sure.
What are some of your favorite drills? Let me know below!
Good commitment on your part. How about one video showing your tournament medals, your choice of paddles (past & present), a chart detailing your DUPR rise in points, your family life, your diet and how you edit your videos. Then another video arriving at a tournament, follow how you spend the day at the tournament and the aftermath.
I like it. Some good ideas here. I'll definitely do some of these.
@@DrausPickleball here's a link to Tanner's Day in the life of a professional player. Some good ideas here as well. th-cam.com/video/8DKzOHpi5sk/w-d-xo.html
@@CHum-bd1mz I just watched that today and really enjoyed it. Ridley is a riot.
Those paddles reinforce to me why they need to be less hot. So much banging. Amazing no eye protection. Great play overall though. Subscribed.
Yeah my partner and I both wear eye protection. Ive taken a few off the face that im glad was protected. In the bronze match we played two core crushed mods. Its not even fun I agree paddle technology could slow way down. My partner and I actually both use what might be considered control or all court paddles.
Good luck on your journey. I'd like to hear more technical analysis and/or shot decision. I would describe you as a super aggressive player. When it was 7-3 and you solo shake and baked, maybe the comment shouldn't be "I need to finish that one." but instead be "I need to 70% that one for the easy finish. I did the hard work already!" I do appreciate the video editing to just show the action. Cheers. What are your favorite drills?
Thank you that’s good feedback. I probably need to pause some of the footage to give more in depth feedback. There is a lot of strategy that goes through a lot of my shot selection that I would like to share. For the next match breakdown I can pause after the point and give more in depth feedback.
Comment below what you would like to see in this series
oo wow i play there too for open play. good luck on journey
How important is it to have a similar dupr partner?
Depends on what your goals are. I would find someone that you vibe well with and has similar goals to you. You don't want to play with someone who doesn't want to get better, you also don't want to play with a really good partner who is a huge dick. I think having chemistry is very important and will serve you better. You want someone who compliments your strengths and hides your weaknesses and generally vibes well with you. I like a partner who is positive and builds me up instead of playing the blame game.
Good luck. I will be following. My goal is 4.0 lvl for now. Started pb two months ago and my dupr sitting at 3.6 ish. What are some things I can work on to get yo 4.0+?
My biggest advice would be to work on footwork. Try to beat the ball to the spot and work on split stepping so you are not moving while hitting. One of the biggest mistakes I see new players make is hitting a lot of shots off balance or running through the shot while making contact. Stop just before and hit a shot, make sure you are balanced, and you'll notice a huge improvement in consistency. At the 4.0 level the team that makes it to the kitchen more often wins the game most of the time. I would focus on getting really comfortable with hitting third and fifth shots all over the court. Do try to do too much when you get to the kitchen. 4.0 players are impatient, let them hit bad shots and punish their mistakes. Good luck in your journey!
Thank you for your advice! 🙏 I also want to get really good at pb.
@@yodatoy8792 Keep at it! My next video will go over a typical drill session so you can see some of the drills I work on regularly to tune the shots
@@DrausPickleballsplit step so so important. I worked on it and makes a huge difference. Also how about staying low at the kitchen?
@ yeah definitely. I try to stay as low as I can because when you record yourself, you never look as low as you feel. Staying low and split stepping helps me feel more focused on the ball and ready to react. It also makes letting out balls go that much easier.
Gay waste of time. No money. Go find a hobby that is competitive and full of competition like building small apartment buildings. Go have some kids and be a man and stop playing a game easier than kickball.
Maybe try ditching the 3rd shot drive, it seems to be pretty ineffective imo or do you have a reason for it?
Most of the time the third shot drive does a good job of producing a weak fourth short from the opponent so our fifth is much easier and we can get to the kitchen. It works well against players who don’t have great hands or are still moving in transition. Earlier in the day we were winning a lot of points off of drives. Towards the end of this game I was trying too hard to end the game and missed some drives. It’s a learning I need to take away and default back to safe drops and dinks when the drive isn’t working the way we want. All growing pains and easy to see when watching back.
@DrausPickleball makes sense👍
Good luck, I'll be watching along👌
Thanks for the support!
3:19 before I figured out for certain which guy you were on the court. Hello! Earth to Mars! This is your introductory video, I couldn't pick you out of a police lineup assembled in the world's smallest elevator. If you are the bookish type, check out Pinker's _Curse of Knowledge._ To enter into the communication business half as seriously as you are already in the pickleball business, you need to know this stuff. You're going to have to work on this telepathy problem if you are in this for the long haul. Here's an excerpt: Call it the Curse of Knowledge: a difficulty in imagining what it is like for someone else not to know something that you know. The term was invented by economists to help explain why people are not as shrewd in bargaining as they could be when they possess information that their opposite number does not. Psychologists sometimes call it mindblindness. In the textbook experiment, a child comes into the lab, opens an M&M box, and is surprised to find pencils in it. Not only does the child think that another child entering the lab will somehow know it contains pencils, but the child will say that he himself knew it contained pencils all along! The curse of knowledge is the single best explanation of why good people write bad prose. It simply doesn't occur to the writer that her readers don't know what she knows-that they haven't mastered the argot of her guild, can't divine the missing steps that seem too obvious to mention, have no way to visualize a scene that to her is as clear as day. And so the writer doesn't bother to explain the jargon, or spell out the logic, or supply the necessary detail.
Looking forward to more episodes bro!

Kudo's for posting. Been playing for 10 years now and run a group of guys but we don't play official matches so I'm trying to get a DUPR rating and this helps me confirm where I think I am at. I play rec with a guy that is a 4.631 and he must clam up in real matches as he would eat some lunch up there! ;)

this is 4.0 level?
I would argue they're a bit higher than 4.0. We expect inconsistency at the 4.0+ level, especially in a tournament setting where you might be playing against unfamiliar people in an unfamiliar environment. So missed dinks/volleys/drives/drops/etc. are totally expected. But they show some really solid skills and great anticipation throughout the game that you only see from 4.0+ players. Watch the point at 4:10 for a good example. The point has everything. Solid serve, deep return, decent top spin drop (a little high, but that's fine), good follow up drop, followed by a series of aggressive and neutral dinks until eventually a well placed dink leads to a pop up. The other team tries to attack the space created by pushing the leftside player out on an aggressive dink but leaves the ball a little too high and the leftside player does a great job of getting back and covering with a really solid forehand counter. The attacking player made the right decision strategically but just failed in execution. That's a high level point and easily 4.0+.
This is clickbait......where are the 4.0s.....?
These guys were super nervous
Awesome content! subbed!

@@nn-NeuralNetwork yeah I saw that too watching back but unfortunately my back was turned real time
very cool
4.5? No chance. More like 3.2-3.5. Only a hand full of of points made it to the kitchen. Many returns and thirds out or into the net. Don’t become attached to a rating. Just improve your play and the rest will sort itself out.

Hey Felipe, I was planning on going Thursday night (10/3) this week to open play and challenge court 6-8 and might also play Friday night. Most of the time I just drill. I dont have a ton of extra time to play but if you want to get some games in come on down those days and we can get some games in.
