You can do a staccato on a half note. It’s not normally used, but staccato only means that the note is separated from the next note.

@KlldbyCuriosity That wouldn't be a very helpful way of notating it. The thing with notation is that you want to answer as many questions with the notation as is possible. The problem with a staccato half-note is that the tempo does not justify it, and it can cause confusion to a reader. A staccato mark by definition does not mean the note is separated from the next. No articulation or slur at all (or, in more drastically separated notes, a breath mark) will deliver this information. With a staccato half note, the note duration doesn't reflect the articulation, and you end up with a musician unsure of what the composer is asking of them. You COULD write a staccato half-note, but that does not in any way mean you should, as it only serves to create confusion where confusion shouldn't be created. The biggest rule of notation is answering any questions that may come up. Notation is not the space for vagueness or lack of clarity, if you get me.

@@UnknownSpooky You don’t need to talk down to me, I’m a composer. And yes, a staccato is used for a full separation, no articulation is a connected note with a regular articulation. If you were writing for strings and have two half notes and no articulation marking in 4/4, would you expect the string player to lift their bow between them? No, it stays connected even though they’d bow in the other direction. It is not a normal notation, but it isn’t *wrong* to have a staccato half note.

@KlldbyCuriosity I apologize if it seemed as though I was talking down to you. I know i tend to speak very matter-of-factly, and that that can come off as rude. All I ask is that you refrain from accusing me of such a thing when there is no way I would know immediately that you are a composer. Please know that I am not intending my words to come off as talking down to you. I am a composer myself, and I have very much been a stickler for proper notation. As far as the bowing analogy is concerned, string notation is very different from that of wind and percussion instruments. I won't assume where you were educated, as composition educators' methodologies will differ wildly. As for myself, I was taught that ambiguous notation, such as a staccato half-note, is very much something to be avoided. A staccato marking, in my mind, will generally always mean that the note is to be played short. How short is inherently ambiguous, but on a longer note duration, such as a half note, it can easily lead to the player not being certain how exactly long the note is intended to be. The way I learned (and the way I feel) is that note durations should accurately reflect the sound the composer/arranger is looking for, and the way the staccato half note in this notation reads to me, as a musician as well as a composer, is that the note is to be played as a half note with its duration cut arbitrarily short. This definition of the notation I find very unhelpful, as it creates that sense of ambiguity that really needs to be avoided, especially in a context as hyper-particular as drum corps. Technically, of course it is not at all wrong to notate this, but contextually, it ought to be avoided, if you ask me. The notation should always reflect the music as accurately as it can, in both metrics and feel.
