The Kung Fu Intellect
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 ก.ค. 2021
I'm a martial arts enthusiast with an interest in the understanding internal martial arts methods from a modern kinesiological viewpoint. Follow as I study and explore the physiological mechanisms behind the training methods of Xingyiquan, Baguazhang and Taijiquan while I continue my own training of these great arts!
Exercise science is not my profession but I make an honest effort to use textbooks, scientific papers and other literature to support the information in the analyses of the exercises, postures and breathing methods explained in the videos. I've been practicing Chinese martial arts for over two decades and continue to learn and grow in these arts while also regularly training modern combat sport.
There's even more content on IG so follow me there as well @the.kungfu.intellect

8 Pieces of Brocade - Bouncing on the Heels
The last piece of brocade in the set! I'm giving my take on the movement and possible benefits. It's a bit of speculation since I think it has more to do with connective tissue (fascia) and bone stimulation as opposed to muscle activity. Check it out and let me know what you think the potential effects or benefits of this movement are!

One more to go after this! I took a little different approach to this part of the 8 Pieces of Brocade and did not perform a musculoskeletal analysis. I think this one has a different affect which is focused on the nervous system. Give it a watch/listen and let me know what you think in comments! #qigong #neigong #taichi #taijiquan #taichichuan #exercise #stretching #chigong
8 Pieces of Brocade - Two Hands Hold the Feet to Strengthen Kidneys and Waist
มุมมอง 428ปีที่แล้ว
We're nearing the last few movements in the 8 Pieces of Brocade. Here's a breakdown of the movement commonly known as Two Hand Hold the Feet to Strengthen Kidneys and Waist. We see that this movement largely emphasizes the posterior train/back line. The "rolling up" variation involves sequential activation of the various attachment points of the erector spinae muscles up the the ribcage and end...
8 Pieces of Brocade - Sway the Head Swing the Tail
มุมมอง 316ปีที่แล้ว
Back from an unintended break, here's the analysis for the next movement in the 8 Pieces of Brocade. This movement largely focuses on the movement of the pelvis in multiple planes (lateral tilt, rotation, posterior/anterior tilt). Keeping in line with the previous analyses we'll cover the muscles and fascia links involved. Also, animating is tough work!
8 Pieces of Brocade - Wise Owl Gazes Backward
มุมมอง 4042 ปีที่แล้ว
Analyzing the muscles, connective tissue and their interactions in the fourth exercise of the 8 Pieces of Brocade Qigong set. This movement is commonly known as "Wise Owl Gazes Backward" and involves rotation of the head while the arm are externally rotated and outstretched downward creating a stretch across the chest. This postures seems to increase the stretch across the sternocleidomastoid (...
8 Pieces of Brocade - Separate Heaven and Earth
มุมมอง 5262 ปีที่แล้ว
Continuing on with the analysis of the movements in the 8 Pieces of Brocade Qigong set is the movement commonly known as Separate Heaven and Earth. This movement involves pushing up towards the sky with one palm while pushing down with the other palm. This video describes the basic points of the movement then studies the state of various muscles involved including the relationship to myofascial...
8 Pieces of Brocade - Pull the Bow, Shoot the Hawk

Muscle tension and myofascial analysis of the next movement in the popular 8 Pieces of Brocade Qigong set known as Pull the Bow, Shoot the Hawk. This movement closely resembles drawing a bow as the name implies. Here's an examination of the muscle tension in both the starting and ending position and the myofascial meridians mainly involved in the movement. If you find this interesting hit the l...
8 Pieces of Brocade - Hands Hold Up Heaven Physio Analysis
มุมมอง 6752 ปีที่แล้ว
The 8 Pieces of Brocade is a very popular Qigong set of movements and postures that is very accessible to practitioners of all ages and physical abilities. Let's look at the first movement in this set from a physiological perspective and identify the muscles involved, state of tension and effect on major aponeurotic fascia. Let me know what you think in the comments or if there is a variation o...
CMA Fighting Principles in Combat Sports (7 Star Mantis 12 Character Principles)
มุมมอง 4102 ปีที่แล้ว
I made a comment on IG stating that CMA principles were universal and could be seen in combat sports. The principles I had in mind were what I learned as the 12 character principles when I trained 7 star mantis. Here's a presentation of the first 3 and some examples of how I see these in use in combat sports. Any other examples? Thoughts? Let me know in the comments! This will be a nice exercis...
Analysis of Zhan Zhuang (Post standing/Tree hugging stance) Part 2 - Muscle, Fascia and Tension
มุมมอง 9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Last post of 2021 is an in depth analysis of the muscle, fascia, agonist/antagonist pairs, tensional relationships and even myofascial meridians (Anatomy Trains) involved in the Zhan Zhuang posture. My goal was to convey a overall conceptualization and relationships of the tensional forces (muscle and fascia) in this posture and support it via the muscles and fascial sheets involved. Static pos...
Analysis of Zhan Zhuang (Post standing/tree hugging stance) - Posture and Breathing
มุมมอง 24K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Analyzing the popular zhan zhuang standing. This video describes how the stance is performed as I know it. I identify some of the muscles and their state (shortened or stretched) and how the posture may influence breathing. I'll release the next video tomorrow which is an in depth study of the tensional forces at work (muscle and fascia) #breathwork #qigong #zhanzhuang #posture #standing #stanc...
Breathwork: Is It Useful for Trained Athletes?
มุมมอง 892 ปีที่แล้ว
I came across two more studies that partially address a few questions regarding breathwork. The first is a comparison of the effects of breathwork with that of physical exercise such as jogging. The second is a small study of the performance effects of breathwork in swimming athletes. Do you think breathwork is useful for already trained athletes particularly endurance athletes? Why? I'd be int...

Analysis of Xingyi Santi Posture - Variations in Hip, Knee and Foot Position
If you bend the knees while going on the balls of your feet then you are accessing the small soleus muscle which is a primary mechanism for weight modulation and a route to the fascia from feet to the body to help prevent ageing.
I assume you are referring to this study about the soleus and weight management? "A potent physiological method to magnify and sustain soleus oxidative metabolism improves glucose and lipid regulation" www.cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S2589-0042(22)01141-5?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2589004222011415%3Fshowall%3Dtrue I've wondered if this effect is simply the same as any activity associated with NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). The soleus along with the other muscles in the lower leg is compartmentalized by the deep fascia (crural) and from my understanding is continuous with the plantar fascia. Any activity of the lower leg and foot would involve the fascia.
This is fantastic. Hopefully if time permits you that there will be more videos like this one and also the more in depth fascia and muscle movement videos. An in depth Xingyi 5 element fists videos would certainly be a interesting selection of videos to watch and study. Thanks again for all the videos you post. Most appreciated.
Thanks for the support. Glad you liked it. More analyses are in the plan! I'm intending to get back into the groove over fall and winter this year.
What exercises would be good for this problem? :)
It's not a problem. Changes in intra abdominal pressure is part of normal breathing.
@@thekungfuintellect Well it's because i have a problem with my pelvic floor, where i can't get breath out to the side or into the pelvic floor. And when i breath it's like my organs are pushed down and put more pressure on the pelvic.
I'd advise talking to a doctor about your symptoms.
Thanks for all the videos you post. Much appreciated.
This is not a great video at all, the diagram is vague and the arm posture appears to high, creating tension
thanks for the feedback!
This for Wet Dreams?
Tai Chi is my main practice, thank you helped me renew my 8 Piece of Brocade.
Glad I was able to help!
It's a shame you're not a doctor - this is really helpful. You should head off to med school or become a physio.
thank you! I'm glad you found it useful!
Part 2?
Eventually...😁
@@thekungfuintellect thanks🌟
Bro, your work is incredibly valuable. Nothing compared to anything here on TH-cam. Please don't stop. Subscribed instantly.
Thanks for the support! I'm still working on it just been busy with IRL stuff haha
Can u do or point me towards a vid that explains how to use the fascia like internal martial artists do. Interestingly enough thats why japanese martial arts use the dragon(spiral) symbolism to represent the spiral of fascia in our bodies.
As a lung disease person ,i am so interested in this topic . I practice tai chi and qi gong daily, also abdominal breathing as part of my wellnes work . Your videos are amazing , very well put together and easily understood. Thank you so much for posting you work , for sharing your knowledge. Many many thanks.
Glad you find it helpful. Thank you 🙏🏽
I don't like the hand / arm position in the diagram. I believe that the elbows should drop a bit more and the hands should be in closer to the body. Breathing should be natural and the focus should be to relax (song) and not the breath. I believe the focus on this standing posture should be on creating peng.
Thank you so much again for putting this together and sharing your extremely interesting understandings - Nice one!
Thank you - nice one!
Thank you so much for this - as a retired Kinesiologist beginning my journey with Qigong, I really appreciate your analysis of the muscles, connective tissue and their interactions
That's great to hear thank you. I've studied the kinesiology /anatomy part on my own so let me know if you think I got anything wrong.
Thank you 🙏 so much for your knowledge. Love your channel great work.
Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I recently got really lightheaded doing this one. I’d done the 8 brocades for years and never felt this. I just started back up recently and its crazy how dizzy I get on this and I’m an athlete. Could it be a sign of weak kidneys? Its definitely a sign of an energetic imbalance. After I do it about seven times, I feel much better. What kind of energy block am I experiencing when I feel dizzy on this one? Thx.
Wait, sorry, wrong pose. Its the one where my hands follow the meridians.
Well done, great video. I love it when people try and explain Tai Chi and Qigong in a way that uses science rather than ancient and often incorrect beliefs.
Thank you 🙏🏽
Elbows down - shoulders down - poor graphics
amazing. Could you please analyse other position of the 8 pieces of brocade?
Glad you enjoyed! I've actually already analyzed all but the last two. Check them.out here: th-cam.com/play/PLUOvOa5CEy4N6KKWL7qPBbpI86byH_jQz.html&si=oIMeuxMDiELoeIft

Best anatomic explanation ever! thank you very much for the great work!
Thank you🙏🏽 glad you found it useful!
how do you know when you are in correct posture?
It's best to follow your instructors direction. This video is not intended to teach the posture itself. It's just an analysis of the posture and variations which I've observed from a physiological standpoint.
Its funny how an eastern meditation technique is analyzed thoroughly from physical body point of view...😊
May I ask who your Zhan Zhuang teacher is?
In my Xingyi practice we didn't train this posture. I'm mostly aware of it through other practitioners.
@@thekungfuintellect Ah, ok, that explains it. The posture as it is shown here is not correct, and can even be harmful if performed as it is described here. Some of the explanation given is contradictory to the basic idea of zhan zhuang. Please be careful. I wish you a nice day and fun with training!
@@gardenofchi2024 feel free to send me the way you practice and I'll include it in an updated analysis.
@@thekungfuintellect Thank you for your kind and open reaction. If you like you can find my website for some information. There is too much to know for sharing in just a few sentences. The posture you refer to, follows some basics 'rules' but has adaptations depending on the goal (martial, spiritual, health) and the individual situation. One basic of zhan zhuang for the first years is, not to tense or force breathing, to relax and release the upper body, to seek the golden middle for physical alignment. To bring the structure in such alignment, that gravity works easy on us. Every posture is designed for a certain impact. Squeezing or compressing organs is not what one would look for, it can damage health. I recommend the books of master Lam Kam Chuen.

Thanks much appreciated 🙏🏽
An interesting post. It never ceases to amaze me how many variations of the Ba Duan Jin/ Pa Tuan Chin there are. We do our version of this exercise slightly differently but I've seen this and a few other ways of doing it too. Nice work.
Thanks! I try to address the few variations I know. I imagine they all emphasize similar aspects.

This was not traditional ally part of tai chi. Neither is it an old chi Kung posture. Chi Kung is a new idea. It refers to the dao yin scroll. To the ancient health dance. The internal art that has posture holding is xing yi. One of their masters created a rebirth in posture holding or zhang zhuang.. he popularized it in the 1930s
Thanks for the info. I haven't studied the history in depth much. Just know that many Taiji folks practice this posture. I've practice Xingyi but my teacher(s) didn't emphasize this posture.
Just because Qigong is a new idea doesn't mean a lot of the practices contained in it aren't older. But the history is convoluted and vague, yes.
I love this. Been waiting for some snow to fall for this very thing 😂
Thank you.
Applauding Loudly !! Hear hear, well said. information like this needs to be well studied/ explained, then practiced

Oh wow, you practice Xinyiquan! We also do the Squatting monkey and chicken steps in Che Xingyi. Nice!
That's great! I'm mostly doing Dai (precursor to Che) movements in that vid, but I practice a mix of both!
I have been exercising internal martial art more than forty years . Analysis of this video about Zhan Zhang Is the most reasonable as far as i can see. A thumbs up👍👍👍
Thank you!
really? i have only been learning internal tai chi for two years and not once have i been told to keep my elbows raised like this? jst the opposite. this seems to go against basic internal practice
@@amandasteven1400hat is because in today taichiquan a lot of teachers dont understand correct zz training. I recommend basic neijia practice especially doing yiquan and bagua/xingyi basics until one reach the stage of moving with whole body connection and dont loose the connection. This stage is also called "walking in mud or fog" or "pilestanding while walking". Then u can advance to taichiQUAN form practice. So if u have no neijin like strong sensation of peng during moving then maybe search other teacher or practice yiquan/neigong. I met many people who train taichi many years but have no neijin 😮😮
Excellent presentation. IMA needs a lot more of this type of breakdown. Well done!
Thank you! Glad you found it valuable

What's hard for me now is getting the feet to feel equally apart, sometimes one leg gets tired faster n messes up my concentration, any tips?
Your teacher should be able to help you with that. Otherwise, recording your self or practicing in front of a mirror can be quite useful for examining your posture
what's your theory KFI ? some thoughts that come to mind is WIM HOFF preacher of cold immersion to shock and strengthen immune system yada yada i finish my shower with cold every day and feel good- a while ago I did TAI CHI YEAR ROUND in my yard in the north east and kept a shoveled platform in my yard ready for sunrise tai chi...it felt good HAI YANG MONTREAL says spring is the time to strengthen YANG CHI
I was just joking around here, but there is a bunch of science showing that cold exposure can have positive effects in a number of different physiological areas.
@@thekungfuintellect no doubt- WIM HOFF 1 hour ice bath me 3 mins tap cold at 3 0' clock shower - when i watched WIM HOFF he opined -clothes, being indoors always, climate control environment -too far deviation from our evolutionary nature while our genetic make-up physiology remains the same as 2 million years ago... or at least 50,000 when homo sapiens cross-bred with neanderthal ( h.s. male/neanderthal woman )makes people chronic sick- I agree
@@roberthoffman9232 my personal opinion is one should expose themselves to a range of environmental conditions. Hot and cold. Only staying indoors is detrimental to overall health in many ways.
Excellent primer on SHOOT THE BOW integral movement in 8 PIECE BROCADE chi kung foundation temple movements Your vid helped me mindfully re-examine the movement I have been doing many years- YOU have freshened my practice providing alternative path ways and YOUR ANATOMICAL ANALYSIS vastly crystalizes YI-MIND INTENTION - NEI GUNG -INTERNAL ART there are charlatans i fancy silks who lack knowledge KFI lectures for self-understanding and to share knowledge of the art

so what is exciting here KFI is NEI GUNG is internal practice governed by YI-INTENTION-MIND- these are esoteric concepts at best compounded by poor translation from mandarin to english and worsened by false masters- in contra-distinction YOUR GRAPHIC PHYSIOLOGICAL ILLUSTRATIONS have greatly improved my understanding in implementation of YI to my NEI GUNG-YI QUAN-TAI CHI-BA GUA -XING YI -FA JING -ZHAN ZUANG practice and I believe are consistent with YI QUAN LINEAGE the DENTIST who quantified YI QUAN brought YI QUAN to hospitals in CHINA and to cross training other sports- I am working my way through your catalog and felt the need to post my support-compliments- and encouragement KFI

I am just beginning to explore your kinetic and physiological analysis of TREE STANDING and am so excited I post to commend you- My ZHAN ZUANG standing has given me structure chi-jing-shen "beyond words " but it sure is wonderful to put some words and physiological science applied to the practice- thank you I will post as I gain greater understanding and absorb your catalog every vid posted wonderful and relevant to me-there are many greedy false masters- there is no magic or superstition - hong kong cinema wire is garbage -power comes from YANG CHI -old man tai chi is better than the easy chair but true power comes from cultivation of yang chi IMHO
Thanks! I'm still creating more analyses. There's alot to explore and understand!
Thanks, I'm practicing with my hands at mid chest level. Very difficult to hold them at shoulder level for long right now.
Holding the hands at chest or navel is also very common. The lower the hands are held the less the anterior deltoid has to shorten to pull the arm up (i.e. less shoulder flexion). I find that emphasis on shoulder protraction also helps to when holding the hands higher.
that just takes practice...do not strain...just stand... check out MASTER CUI RUBIN a famous YI QUAN MASTER with true lineage... i have been standing a couple years and my hands are raised in the posture of CUI RUBIN... RAISED HANDS best protect the head in combat... and provide the greatest " structure "... the health benefits and raised spirit that flow from postures with " MARTIAL INTENT " are all one synergy ...of course this is KFI's channel and I would be all ears to read his kinetic analysis as that angle is pretty new to me and I am on it like white on rice and sorely lack KFI's anatomical expertise
