Not really a drum machine, just a couple of midi controllers: Akai MPD 218 and Korg nanopad 2 (the yellow one); using them to trigger sounds from a drum vst on the DAW (Reaper in my case)

for passages like 1:38 you could assign all bottom 4 to bassdrum and roll across like a piano or crab on a dj crossfader type dealy, freeing up your entire left hand
@@midinerd The layout thing is something where I prefer to stick to the one I developed over the years, the technique you are referring to is what I use for more syncopated kick drum matters, it involves something that I didn't use here which is the whole independent hand thing, it's kind of like playing bass with 3 finger technique (if that makes any sense) with one hand and the crashes and snare with the other, it sounds easier to do than it actually is jajajaja specially for Meshuggah like polyrhythmic / polymetric / displacement stuff. This new midi controller I got us really good in response and feel, but it's true that my big hands sometimes have a hard time with that 3 finger technique I told you. I would really like to get a launchpad in the future to have a lot of pads and basically have a row of kicks or something like that. This whole thing is still kind of new and for playing this styles I don't know much an actual drummer can be imitated, at least I don't know how much I can do it jajajaja
