Yoko Ono and Asian-American Identity
Yoko Ono's career consists of over half a century of art, music, and activism. Yet despite this, public knowledge of her is limited to her famous husband and unsubstantiated rumours about her breaking up his band. This video aims to fix that, looking at Yoko Ono outside of her relationship to any one man, examining her life, art, and the ways she expressed her identity as an Asian American woman through them. This video also examines the history of anti-Asian racism in misogyny in America behind why Yoko was and continues to be viewed differently than her white male peers and contemporaries. I had initially begun writing this video in 2021, in solidarity with the Stop Asian Hate movement that began in response to a rise in Anti-Asian hate crimes. It took me almost two years to finish writing, recording, and editing the video. Despite the public conversation having moved on (sadly, it seems, to a similar rise in anti-LGBTQ+ violence), these issues continue to be relevant, and I wanted to cover them within a more specific context relevant to my interests.

here's my interpretation of the "i caught a fleeting glimpse" line. pink glimped a life of true joy and happiness, but it was as fleeting as childhood itself, even less so with all of his childhood troubles. pink is so alienated from himself and his joy that he can no longer "put his finger on it". the wall is too high. he achieved his dreams of being a rockstar. what he didn't achieve was his dream of happiness and serenity. this may be referred back to in "the show must go on" with the line, "am i too old? is it too late?" typically the "am i too old" concern with people has to do with achieving dreams of passion, like pink's of being a rockstar, but the only thing pink has to dream of now is serenity and connection. it's the one thing he doesn't have, and it's the one thing he is afraid he is too old and too deep behind his wall to truly grasp.

I just realized, the reason why the judge is an asshole is cause Pink sees himself as an asshole, and judges himself for his past actions

Scary Monsters is in my opinion is all about his experiences and observations of leaving America and crashing/drying out in Berlin. He observed the new sounds being created at that time.. the politics of West vs. East Berlin. I think he used alot introductions of "This is not going to happen to me again..I am coming back clean and wiser America.

What TV show or movie is that on the TV at 9:25 (Gomer Pyle?)? ALso, the first part of this analysis was great. I don't really know how to explain it, but this really opened up a whole new way for me to listen to this album. SO far, this part has picked up perfectly from where the first part left off. Thank you for taking the time to put these two videos together those four years ago. EDIT: Nevermind. I guess if I would have just waited another minute I would of had my answer. LOL

I find it interesting that in "The Trial", Pink only sings after the teacher and his mother, since they were part of the problem to begin with. They aren't fully guilty, but not innocent in the slightest.

See just watching you theorize the first half last time, while building up the wall just made me compare you to poor Pink who soon traps himself with his own wall and is now sitting in isolation throughout second half until The Trial and Outside The Wall. With your background becoming the area Pink is mostly likely at, makes me think your following Pink closely and making sure he’s okay until he tears down the wall, and hearing the phrase with the last and first songs “Isn’t this where we came in?” And this means we have just looped Pink right back to the beginning where he’s doomed to build the wall once again. It’s only over if we reach the end and change our minds to another piece of music. And when you go back to the lounge from the beginning of your analysis, just makes me think you also broke the wall you used to show how much Pink has built up the wall, and when he tears it down, you do too, and then you both end up in a good place, and for you, that’s your lounge. Great job man

The end of "Stop" has the word "Time" from the line, "Have I been guilty all this time" echo, along with the words "to know" from the line, "because I have to know". These echoing words make up the phrase "time to know" as they play together, which is a perfect sentiment as it then goes into the song "The Trial".

  • @doesitmatter9085

The line "Take me home" in "The Show Must Go On" is addressed to his father, which is why it's preceded by the chorus singing, "Oooh pa". Similarly, "Let me go" is addressed to his mother, as preceded by "Ooooh ma".

Oddly enough this was his last RCA studio album which garnered four singles….Ashes to Ashes, Fashion and Scary Monsters and the less commercial up the hill backwards, the first two being hits….number 1 and number 5 in the UK. However he then parted ways with RCA, how much of that was his decision I’m not sure, although he was dissatisfied with them.

I mean, this is a great analysis and the video is very well put together, don't get me wrong, but I find the idea of "content warnings" in Bowie's music to be quite silly. Anybody that could be "disturbed" by the contents of this album (why they would be is anyone's guess) probably isn't watching a deep-dive review of it. Still, great video, subbed.

Musicians are always depressed. I mean I went through multiple suicide attempts, abusive parents who were violent towards each other, a heroin addiction, but I thought it was cool cause I played shows and people acted like they liked me. But now I'm happier now that I broke the wall down and quit doing drugs and started meeting people who weren't so sleazy
