Porsche 944 major repairs and service PART 1
Can we save the 944?
After less than a month of owning the Porsche 944, the timing belt has broken. I know, I know, I know: I should have changed the timing belt before doing anything else with it. You live. You learn. Since the 944 has an interference style engine, the valves have collided with the pistons, causing bent valves at a minimum.
As mentioned in the video, be sure to subcribe to Casey the Car Guy for some extensive Porsche 944 content. #Porsche944 #944restoration #944timingbelt

porsche 911 window not working - regulator replacement for 996 and 986

porsche window not working Common symptoms of a dying window regulator on your Porsche 911 include the window not dropping fully to clear the window seal when opening and closing the door, and also making a crunching, grinding noise when the window is operated. It may sound like sand or gravel is grinding against the window. In this episode my buddy Bradley and I tackle the task in his 2000 Por...
Porsche 911 Short Film - exploring Hattiesburg Mississippi Downtown

Porsche 911 short film Living in south Mississippi and daily driving a Porsche 911 can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. Between living on a dirt road and constantly having a bit of mud in the wheel arches after a rain, and taking the kids to school downtown across bumpy, 100 year old brick-paver streets, a pick-up truck or SUV would likely make more sense. But... There's something magical abo...
We Bought an 80's Porsche and Drove it 850 Miles Home!

We Bought an 80's Porsche Yes, we bought ANOTHER Porsche... but this time its MUCH older; 41 years old to be exact! When my son Sawyer was looking for his first car, his only requirement was that it would be an 80's car with pop up headlights. The Porsche 944 fits the bill perfectly! Nothing is more iconically 80's than an 80's Porsche, and specifically a Porsche 944. Like with all of my other ...

Porsche on the Limit Have you ever wondered just how fast your Porsche can go? And not just putting your foot down to hit a top speed, but really on the limit through the corners, tires squealing, G forces pressing you agaist the seat, braking at the last possible moment, finding the limit of grip in your tires... I'm a huge proponent of finding that limit in your Porsche on a race track. In th...
Porsche Motor Mount Replacement for 991, 997, 996

Porsche Motor Mount Replacement First up: Why do you need to replace your motor mounts? Over time the rubber housed inside the mount will deteriorate, causing the engine to sag and more vibrations to be sent into the cabin. Shifts will be more abrupt than Porsche intended, and idle won't be as smooth as it should. My Porsche 997 had 140,000 miles on it the time I replaced these and OH WHAT A DI...

Porsche 911 Wheel Spacers - before and after

I've previously lowered the Porsche with Eibach lowering springs, and these wheel spacers are the finishing t...
Porsche 911 997.2 Starter Replacement

Porsche 997.2 Starter Replacement In the last episode we left off with my 911 being loaded onto the back of a tow truck because it would not crank. The key would turn, but it would only make a 'click' sound. After narrowing down the issue to the starter and ordering a new starter for the 911, I proceeded to change it out. There’s no doubt it’s a more firm ride than stock. It’s very similar to stock with the sport PASM suspension switched on. I don’t mind at all.
@ thx for the info. Hey are you on stock shocks?
@shughes911 yes, for now I am. When the time comes, I will replace them with Bilstein B8. That’s what I did on my 996 as well.
@ ya that’s what I will go with as well. Thx for the feedback back
On LHD drive 968s, even using the proper front jack point for a single hydraulic jack can mess up the floor and cause gas pedal problems.
Wow. That’s crazy! I do think it’s pretty cool that Porsche put a little notch on the side of the rocker panel to point to the intended jack point.
@@motorsandmeats88 yeah and the 968 still has the diamond mark in the centre of the rocker but there is no jack point there.
@JVR_Funwithdesign ha. That’s when weirder!
Lovely guys! And love how you're making this a dad and son job!
So excited for this ! You are a good man doing all of this with your boy. He will remember this forever…
I appreciate it! Hoping he forms a bond with his car through the process. When I was a kid I had a 1965 Ford Falcon. It was white with a red stripe and red interior. I loved that car and drove it for 13 years.
Good father son bonding experience!! Hope the repairs go smoothly. And that burger looks damn delicious…
Ha. Thanks. I’m going to do my best to make sure it includes the “meats“ side of things in every episode moving forward someway or another.
Man, it’s pretty cool that you get to work together with your son on the 944. Wish I had the space and budget for a project car to do with my son. And it adds a to. If value if he gets to drive it afterwards. Well done!
I reeeaaally need to build a shop with a lift! My wife’s XC90 has had to park out in the gravel since the day I rolled the 944 into the carport.😂
I support this!! New shops with lifts make for outstanding content. So what are we thinking then? Break ground in….let’s say March. We’re impatiently waiting!! When will we get an update?!😂
@K1dPhresh1 lol. You start the gofundme and I’ll make it happen😂😂😂
Like the new camera
I’m glad you said all that at the end; I was feeling so bad for Sawyer Shout out to Ed’s Burgers 😋
Do you really need to chop out, remove the rear muffler???? 😮😮😮😮
Yes. The Eurowise Offroad Rear Bumper will not fit without removing it. A couple months later, I spent $100 at an exhaust shop to have them add pipe to the cut off ends and hang them properly up and out of the way. Looks and sounds great not having the sound exit underneath the vehicle.
Another great video Michael 👍
Thanks! Just testing out a new camera with this one really.
I've done regulators on a few of my cars, but my 996 was in the shop for some other work and I was all-too-happy to let them replace my bad regulator. Not a job I enjoy.
One job I’ve never enjoyed on the 996 is the alternator removal. I think I ended up doing it 7 times on my old 996 and once on Bradley’s!
sync the Auto adjustment by holding the window switch down for 4 seconds than up all the way + four seconds or vice versa. Pretty rare for a regulator to fail in that capacity, not impossible they work or don't unless an obstruction of dirt, debri, or broken component preventing it to go all the way down or up. Unplugging and reconnecting will also sometimes help resync with the battery disconnected it resets once connected. 🤟🏁 #996brotherhood
Exactly. I should have mentioned that in the video about the resetting procedure! I’ll be back in the 996 brotherhood myself at some point for sure.😬
I had the window drop issue on my 997. It would drop but never go back up. Swapped the motor and problem solved.
Nice. I have not had to do a motor yet, but that’s what I suspect is wrong with the 944 passenger windpw
Yay? That doesn't even seem bad to do...
Poor maintenance 😮
Seems that way I’m afraid. We’ve had the car for 3 weeks, I have the timing belts and water pump kit. I suppose I should have done it as soon as I got the car home! At least this way I get to see what the inside of the engine looks like😬😬😬😬
@ That’s a real kick in the balls to have the kit there. Hopefully it’s just bent some valves and not punched holes the pistons. Keep us updated cheers
Yeah no doubt! Will do. Filming as we go. Good wrenching practice for my 15 year old son though. It’s actually his car
Ding ding! Belt's done!!! Sorry this happened but soon you'll be back up and running in a super-fun car!
All good. Just more fuel for new videos!
Worst riding Porsche in history
This one actually rides pretty nicely. It looks like stock suspension, but it must’ve been replaced at some point in the last decade. It doesn’t even squeak or rattle! The seats are extra squishy compared to the 911, so I bet that contributes to the felt nice ride.
If its an interference engine, you be replacing some valves.
I am sure you are right. Hoping to get the head off the thing tomorrow. The valve cover came off just a bit ago. Filming as I go!
I just got the exact steering wheel from eBay to go into my 987.2 and my question is; is the airbag light will go on? How do you deal with that? My dealer quote me $ 375! for this seemingly 10 minutes job. Thanks. Julio P.S have you done the PDK service yourself yet? Looking forward to seeing how easy you can do it..
I’ve heard that if the battery isn’t disconnected first that it can cause the airbag light to come on. I personally didn’t experience that, so I’m not certain. You may check if the iCarSoft scan tool can reset that airbag light. If so, it costs less than $375, and then you’ll have a great tool for future use. I still have not yet done the PDK service, but it is on my to-do list. I’ll definitely be making a video of it when I do.
@ thank you so much!
Any time, and thanks for watching
Snotty 997 owner forgot about us 996er's because now he's better than us... no eggs for you 😂😂😂😂 What's up buddy!?
😂 funny you should say that. My next video is on my friend’s 996!
@@motorsandmeats88 hahah I'm here for it all!!!!
Got an Army buddy that I was in Korea with 30 years ago that hails from Hattiesburg.
Sweet! I’ve lived here since ‘94
Congrats to young Sawyer! Pretty damned cool first car. Tried to talk my son into a 944, probably more for me than for him. LOL! Should provide for unforgettable Father - Son wrenching and driving and memories that’ll last a life time. Looking forward to the process.
Man it’s such a cool little car. Sawyer just drove it tonight across town for the first time. So far he’s just been going up and down our gravel road to get used to driving manual. I was with him, and he did great!
Cool!
Where did you get that decal kit? Do you have a link? Thanks
I worked with a local decal shop to custom design it. I couldn’t find one commercially available that I loved, but I knew I wanted the Martini colors.
@motorsandmeats88 yea looks great! I tried looking for that style but couldn't find it. Good look!
@slickfixjeff thanks! I just took a bunch of pics of designs I liked to the custom shop, and this is what we came up with. Total cost installed was under $600.
@@motorsandmeats88 sounds good! Thanks
10K miles within 3 months ?? 😳
Just completed my first year with 33k miles. I’ll be doing another video soon to share that experience!
Nice! The early 944 is my preference to the 85.5-up models... love the reissued 924 interior, and the yellow markings on the gauges are classic early 944!
The gauges are very cool in this one. The upside down tach is really unique.
@@motorsandmeats88 That continued into the 1987/88 924S too, although the gauge faces were marked in white by then. My first Porsche was an '87 924S, loved that car.
My 997 cranks right up when it's cold. It's when the car is hot that it has that labored start.
That was the same thing I was experiencing with the 996. The new starter took care of that problem.
Great car! Some MY'99 996 have still the M96.01 engine, this engine has a dual-row IMS bearing, which is considered as much more durable than the successors.
Thanks for watching, and you’re right! This car has the dual row bearing.
Can’t get the axle nut loose. Center cap removed. Tire on the ground. Penetrating oil on threads. Large 1/2 in torque wrench set to max torque. Counter clockwise turn got click at 250 ft pounds and I pulled beyond that. Nothing. Tried impact wrench for a couple of minutes. Nothing. Will try torch to heat up the nut and try again. 🤦🏻♂️
I’m not sure what would be causing it not to come loose. It’s been a while since I did this job, so I just watched back through to see if I could jog my memory. I did it with the wheel off and I think I held back against the hub by putting a crow bar between the lugs while turning the axle nut with a long breaker bar. Sorry I couldn’t be more help. I’m not sure if it makes a difference if the wheel is off or not.
@@motorsandmeats88Thanks for the follow up bro! I found out the factory torque on the wheel bearing is 370 ft lbs! I bought an “Earthquake” pneumatic gun at Harbor Freight and it wouldn’t budge. Bought a 20v Ultra torque Hercules impact that boasts 1500 ft lbs from Harbor Freight on a recommendation from a guy from Advance Auto. Had my wife stand on the brake peddle and went after the nut. Boom baby! It came off! When I went to tap out the axel, my 3 pound hammer wouldn’t move it, so I got pissed off and got out the 8 lb. sledge! Ordered a 3/4in- 48” long torque wrench to put it back together. Thanks again for the insight!
@Bladeslap1 that is some serious torque! I’m going to pin this comment (if I can remember how😂) as I think it may be really helpful to others. Thanks for the update…
Amazing video!! Would have saved me 30mins to an hour if I started here instead of screwing with the starter/coolant lines for so long lol Early on in the project though, i accidentally broke one of the black corrugated tubes in half. (the longer of the two - you undid the first half of yours at 12:10 in the video) Do you have any suggestions on how I could fix that temporarily while I search for a replacement at a salvage yard? the replacement part is 150+ for this darn tube lol i believe it is a fuel vent line. black plastic outside, but lined with metal on the inside. I was thinking of using JB weld, but i'm new-ish to diying my car stuff and don't want to risk damaging anything worse because i'm not knowledgeable enough on it yet. you've already won my sub but i would greatly appreciate any advice on this if you have the time
I’m glad the video is helpful, and that really stinks about the broken tube! Those are for vacuum, so there’s no fluid or anything passing though them. Sounds crude, but I bet you could get it back together temporarily with some duct tape. I once had to duct tape my oil filler tube on my 911 when it broke on a road trip. Those are also part of the vacuum system, and the duct tape kept things functioning til I could get a new one. Good luck, and thanks for the sub!
@@motorsandmeats88 you're the man! i thought this was a long shot but saw you had responded a few days ago. Thank you again!!
@jordanmiller6659 anytime!
@@motorsandmeats88 Got everything put back together today and she started right back up - thank you again!!
@jordanmiller6659 that is excellent! Glad to hear it worked out. Crazy what a little bit of sweat, focus, time, and tools can make happen. Lol.
I'd check the engine mounts too with regards to the drive line shunting
Great idea. I did the engine mounts on my 911 and it made a huge improvement to the smoothness of the shifts.
@motorsandmeats88 I actually just put a new motor mount into my Cayman and also installed some aftermarket urethane inserts that stiffen up the factory mount...I didn't realise that the inserts I had gotten (marketplace purchase) were the "race" hardness.... Holy NVH Batman, took them out after one day.
@ Lolol. I bet you felt EVERYTHING
Your door cards likely got wet/rotting on the backside bottom. If you are not worried about 100% originality, I have seen people cut the tops (scripted part) off and build "RS" style door cards with a luan thin plywood panel that looks really nice.
Yes I think you are right. I have seen that look and really like it.
There is no cowling on the early cars apart from the "hamster cage" over the center blower motor. I have had issues with filling the car with gas too if you do not have the nozzle at the right angle for it to make a straight shot into the tank.
Interesting. Not sure if you can see it in the video or not, but on the side opposite of the battery, there’s a loose piece of plastic that I cannot tell what it’s intended to be covering. I was reading on rennlist or somewhere about the vent tube for the filler neck being loose or something and not allowing the pressure to build up to make the fuel pump shut off. Will investigate further!
@@motorsandmeats88 There is a plastic piece that is kind of triangular I think that cover the wiper motor on the driver side.
@papasmurf986 gotcha. That’s been my best guess, but I haven’t figured out how to secure it there. It just sort of lays there loosely.
Awesome!!! My first Porsche was an 85 early NA. Loved that car so much! Enjoy, young man!
That’s awesome! It’s a lot of fun to drive. We have been having manual driving lessons the last couple days, and he is catching on quickly.
It a nine forty four. Not a nine four four. Hopefully you don’t also say nine one one. Now that’s out of the way, what a cool car! I’ve had four of them and one 944 s2. They are amazing cars, just the right size.
Ha! This debate is about as tough as which oil is the best oil!😂. I do say nine nine six and nine nine seven though😬. I’m such a nerd that I googled nine four four vs nine forty four before I recorded this and found that MOST responded with nine four four 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
They've been nine-four-fours to me since they were new in the 80s. 😎
@@motorsandmeats88 I sure say nine four four, nine forty four sounds weird!
Starting your son off in a manual, now that's good parenting!!!
😂. I like to think so. We were out this afternoon practicing. We were working on getting going from a stand still, finding the bite point of the clutch, easing on the throttle, and all that. Fortunately no one lives on our road but us, so we just started and stopped over and over again for half an hour😂
I’m in England, I have a 2008 cayman but I’m always looking at 944s!!! Nice mate🔥🔥👌🏻
I’ve loved the Cayman since they first came out. I remember seeing one inside the Des Moines, Iowa shopping mall in 2007
@ yep… no immediate plans to replace it either ☺️☺️☺️
So cool! Can’t wait to see it all fixed up and detailed. There is a Porsche suv (sorry I don’t know name) for sale close to Hattiesburg. It’s nice from what I hear. Congrats Sawyer
It sounds like an interest project! I hope that you will have your son help 😂. I would recommend placing it on a lift to look for leaks. Be sure to clean the drains of the sunroof to prevent unwanted surprises. Good luck!!
Sawyer is cautiously excited about wrenching on it. I will definitely be fanning that flame! It does have some oil leaks that I failed to mention in the video.
The last time that you upgraded to a 997.2 from your 996, you inspired me to do the same. This time I’m not going to follow your lead. A Toyota Celica would have been my choice! 😆😆

@martinespinosa 😂 My dad had an ‘84 Celica for a short period of time. It was manual and hatchback. I loved driving it as a teenager!
This is so COOL! I am sooooo happy for your son ! 2 944’s on the Tail next year ? Congrats and good luck!
Hopefully both the the car and Sawyer will be ready by then!
No wonder you were so quick at the Dragon, you have had driver training! That looks awesome, would love to try it out sometime.
I absolutely love driving on track! And yes, I’m sure that’s why. I swear I’m not out there trying to be the fastest driver when we go to the Dragon and beyond. But once you learn properly and safely where the limits of adhesion are with your car, you can then confidently push it closer to the limit and have so much more fun with it😬
Yay! 944!!! Jay should’ve gotten a 944 instead of the 928!
😂😂😂. It’s a really fun little car. My favorite with Jay’s car was when it had the ‘Tis But A Scratch’ sticker before he got the dent repaired!
I might still! I’m watching this with interest! Michael’s a good mate of mine!

Great video. Well Explains steps. Can’t thank you enough for taking the time to make the video.
Thanks for the kind words, and I’m glad it was helpful!
Thanks Mike, great content on owning a 997.2. Your take on the manual vs PDK? When looking, did you have the opportunity to drive both? Good manual examples are few and far between. Is it worth the wait and price premium for the manual? Thanks!
My 996 previous to this was manual and I loved it. The guy who bought it swapped in at 997 GT3 shifter and said it made a night-and-day improvement, so I can’t imagine how good that must be! I was actually purposefully looking for a PDK example, wanting to experience what that was like. I do love it, and I think it’s a fantastic transmission. My next car will be manual though…😬
