When I'm on set (especially cos we do shoots in old buildings a lot) I always have a socket tester in my pocket (yay big pockets). On my last job it proved helpful once again, with 2 sets of sockets showing no earth, and another socket having no neutral. So it meant running cables from further away, but better than risking sensitive electronics or other issues. I also have a bunch of reusable cable ties on my belt for quickly tidying things up or securing bits and pieces. other than that, its much the same, although I'll have a Leatherman "wingman" as my knife since it also has a pliers and scissors while still being relatively small..

Thank you for putting it so well! That's exactly how I learned in college and of union sets (the crates, the coilint, the cable ties, the colors). It's always funny to run on Indy shoots and some green DP telling me stingers are over and under. And I start to question my own knowledge regardless of years of experience. But I am right and been doing over/over for stingers for years. Now XLR microphone cables is over and under. And it takes short practice to remember that method.

This is true for all kinds of freelance and independent work. One job leads to another, leads to another, and another. Two caveats. 1) You can never phone it in. You gotta work hard and impress people so they pass on your name/business card to the next potential client. 2) you're going to have dry spells. You're going to start out with sporadic work. So you need money in the bank or you need to be able to tighten the budget. If you've got a family to care for and bills to pay is going to be hard. If you're in debt it is going to be hard. Show up, work hard, make a good impression, follow up with people the work MIGHT come.

Couple of tips: Its "clockwise." use white cable ties. Its easier to count in the dark. The cable tie goes on the female end. You can often use the cable tie to secure the working end off the ground like on a menace arm. Use cable ties long enough to wrap around the cable twice. It will stay tied longer. This is usually about the length from your hand to your opposite shoulder. Secure the cable tie with a rolling clove hitch. Using electrical tape anywhere on the cable will eventually lead to a gooey mess. Friction tape is the traditional tape used to secure the knot. I use heat shrink to identify length. Yes you should be able to tell how long it is without indicators but anything that helps after long hours and poor visibility helps.

I think this is the best video on this subject. I miss my OG tungsten leko's. almost got a joleko 800 years ago but went full LED and i've been missing a really good bright leko. None of the LED ones really seem designed for brightness which is a shame, as i think some of the most powerful benefit of a leko is bouncing it!

i see you have them barn door lights. they're fun for losing finger prints. best use gloves . don't want them melted.

I have a couple of 120Cs and a few (nine) and am currently looking into using Luminair, can you confirm these and most other Nanlite fixutes are in the Luminair database?

I call them Edison cables or just plain power cables.

Hi how do you mix brands in terms of controlling them? Are there any catches mixing brands vs using the same brand in terms of controls? Are there any issues you’ve found working with different brands of lights? E.g. matching, mixing them seamlessly, or having different modifier mounts? Va to just sticking with one brand? Looking to hear from your experience and perspective if mixing brands works the same as staying in one brand outside of maybe losing the use of a brand specific app to control all lights. Thank you!

I like your build out a lot! I think you have a smart selection of lights for your van size. I almost never see Arri 650s except on student films these days? Almost everyone else has gone LED for their low power fixtures, what's your thinking for using those today?

That is a smart truck. Lots of good solutions and thoughtful organization. 10/10 would work out of this truck on a job with you. That gap of a top shelf on the left is missing a few more pocket lights to use for accenting sets. Either a Rosco Dash 8-light kit or an MC Pro 8-light kit.

I have the 120c. Love it because of that pop up soft box. I'm guessing the 2x2 doesn't have that same feature?

Hello, thank you for your video. Luminar is nice but StageLight is inexpensive and really powerful and it's a one-time payment. As for an antenna I use Easynode Plus Pknight wifi 2.4 Ghz dmx 90$ on Amazon and works just fine. I'm interested in ROXX fixtures and integrating CRMX transceivers, so I'm looking for a budget-friendly CRMX transceiver and that's how I found your video. Do you think I could control the ROXX fixture with Ratpac Satellite or something else as the LumenRadio Aurora is way too expensive for me.

I'd love to see a video on setting up larger lights (60A etc.) on gennies etc.
