Hey, I recognize parts of this trail. (Used to explore the old irrigation canals in the 80s as a kid.) How awesome! The windbreak of pine trees at the end used to be much healthier/denser and was a great hang-out spot. It's been kinda sad to see it slowly wither away, but time marches on. Thanks for sharing. :)
That is awesome. Do you know who owns this land? We filmed it because we love the ride and worry it will be developed.
@@goodobservers I believe it used to belong to Henry and Caroline Franz, then the Smith family who (I think?) sold it to the LDS church sometime in the late 80s. The original homestead cabin was moved to Library Park in Old Town. I think it's still available for viewing, but is usually kept behind lock and key by the city. Like you, I hope the property remains undeveloped; but almost every field in town eventually gets bulldozed unless it's on one of the flood plains. They've even built a neighborhood over the old town dump! We just have to enjoy these spaces while we can.
@@LauraGYoung Thank you, fascinating. That's why we filmed it: so it's immortalized and we can virtually ride it any time if they do sell it and bulldoze it. Such a cool field and canal trail.
@@goodobservers Growing up, almost the entire Harmony corridor was prairie and farmland. I wish you could time travel and see it! That being said, it's awesome that folks like yourself are generously recording/sharing our little patch of the world. It's appreciated. :)
Excellent overview of the trails there! Wish I'd come across your channel before I wandered around looking for a painting spot the other day. :)
Nice video. Peaceful. Such beautiful colors.
Can you spot the "flying" squirrel?
Amazing video. Thanks for inspiration for a new adventure. âĪ
What a good comment to hear. Enjoy the ride; itâs a great one.
Beautiful day nice trail enjoyed the video love to be there tomorrow
What size tires would you recommend for gravel bikes on this trail? I couldn't tell what you had on your bikes.
We used a slick 38 and it was fine, but the gravel is somewhat loose and just under pea size, so I think if you had a little tread it would probably be better.
@@goodobservers Thanks for the information.
No problem. Enjoy the ride. It's a great one.
Dreamy! Came here on a fairlight secan search

Nice, enjoyed all 3! If all goes well, Iâll walk it this September ð
Awesome, thanks!
Nice!
Thanks! Very. Hope you get to do it.
This area is really interesting. It looks different than The Loop and starts to look more like the Outback. Great area. We preferred it to riding The Loop. Our favorite ride in the Tucson area was Catalina State Park, which will be the next video.
The blossoming in April cacti will make these routes even more beautiful.
Do you have the route or strava link?
Yes! Route Here: www.strava.com/routes/3195808049014490170
I appreciate your unorthodox method of presenting your videos. It's a refreshing change from the endless chatter on some channels.
Awesome, thanks. We originally just wanted to document our rides and upload them so we could relive the experience, so it didn't make sense to talk.
Very nicely done! Iâll be out in June to take a spin myself with a friend. âĪ
That was the best 1080p video I've seen on TH-cam! How do you control the camera so it is so smooth panning left and right while riding. Nice production. My plans are set to be on this trail mid-July. Looking forward to a great adventure.
Nice trail ! ðģ ðē
arnt bikers supposed to obey traffic laws? setting a bad example, stop at th stop signs is a traffic law no?
In Fort Collins, those aren't the laws. Cyclists get the right of way and can go through stop signs, red lights, and ride on side walks. Leave it up to the cyclist to know their own local laws?
@@goodobservers okay, inj ohio we have to stop at stop signs, so there you go.
My apologies. I thought you were a local getting on me. We deal with a lot of local drivers who don't know the rules of the road, much more than cyclists here.
A lovely trip around town. Nice to meet you at bike the lights. Keep riding the Barlow pass!
Nice to meet you. Let's ride some time!@@billtucker2414
a year ago i lived in Loveland and thought about riding in Ft Collins. I now ride and reside in Denver. As a new rider I appreciate your videos. Its a way to see a bit of your trails. i love riding. Thanks.
Great feedback, thanks. Did you ever do the Loveland Loop trail? That's one of our favorites. You can actually take it up to Fort Collins via the Long View Trail (or alternate route: North Trail to the Front Range Trail). If you haven't done these routes, it's definitely worth a drive up from Denver to do them! Any trails in Denver worth doing for us?
i am 71 and just started riding in April after i moved to Denver. My favorite ride is the highline canal. I've rode about 2000 miles since then, addicted to riding. P.S. Ive sold my car.@@goodobservers
@@billhemingway5558 Awesome! We gave up the car, too, after getting rear-ended on I-25. We have so many trails up here you don't need one. It's fantastic, right? Save so much money, too!
Thank you for this! I moved to Cheyenne some time back for work and haven't had my weekly trip to FC for riding while recovering from knee replacement. This is one of the rides I mentally ride when I can't sleep. Also Horsetooth Dams, Ryst Canyon through Masonville and Edora to Wellington and back. So glad I found your channel. Checking out the Medicine Bow Rail Trail thanks to you!
Beautiful..i want to live north Colorado ð
I love the Mickelson, thanks for your video! You captured the peace of the trail.
Note: we only did the first ten miles. The second half, which is also ten miles, appeared to have much worse trail conditions, so we turned back and just did 10 each way.
hey guys ...just love your posts...mystery rider format with great audio just is so superior to most cycling posts ....question...is the Mickelson plugged now with ebike /moped traffic?...a forum for that trail says it is a mess.. your videos showed very little passing ebike traffic...just wondered if worth the drive out there to do the full trail?
Awesome, thank you for the feedback! We didn't notice anything like that. We saw maybe a dozen ebikes over 3 days, so maybe a few per day. But I bet this depends what time of year you go. We went very early June (3rd-5th I think) so the weather was still cold enough (60s) to hold a lot of riders back. My recommendation would be to look at the last week of May/first of June or go to late September/early October so nobody else is really out there but us hardcore lunatics. :D
many thanks for the reply..so good to hear ...will get there around that time as I hate the heat...cheers jb@@goodobservers
@@johnbroomfield2617 Where will you be traveling from? And one thing to keep in mind is parts of the trail have a road next to it. It seems to be a dirt road for mining operations. We did have to deal with a bit of intrusive noise from that (about every 30 minutes to an hour a truck would go by and make a bit of noise and kick up some dust), which knocked the trail down a few points for us, but it's still definitely worth doing for all the scenery and uniqueness that is the Black Hills.
Even though this was a hike, we actually met cycling legend Stan Havlick on this walk. Amazing guy.
What a beautiful hiking experience! Incredible scenery and perfect weather. Great video!
Thank you! If you ever make it there in Fall definitely worth your time.
Sweet ride, love the show.
Thanks! I remember you were out in Wyoming. Did you hit this trail?
Love those fragile looking Aspen.
They were truly epic. If you're ever in the area that time of year, highly recommend it!
You may have mentioned in other videos of the Mickelson but what month were you traveling and what were the temps?
It was the first week of June, and I believe the temps were high 70s. It was really nice, but the sun is pretty strong on the trail! I'm more into cooler weather, so I think I'd either go the final week of May or maybe September/early Oct if doing it again.
@@goodobservers Thanks. Most helpful. Hubby and I agree, prefer cooler temps too. Planning trip 2024 and your reply has helped with dates.
@@lyndamohr1591 Excellent. Enjoy! It's a great ride. A lot of uphill day 1 if you take the route we did. That's the other thing to keep in mind. Weather in this area can vary wildly, too. It rained and was cool just the week before we arrived, but for us it was a bit hot and dry.
Just completed our ride. Perfect temps, light rain off and on. Yes, day 1 was challenging but we stopped and took it all in. Beautiful ride. Took the 11 hr drive North to Glacier. Highly recommend the Going to the Sun Road b4 it opens to cars. May-mid June. Cold and drizzle but no wind and gorgeous! Dress appropriate and enjoy the climb. Traveling home now, stopping for the Spring Creek/Poudre trail along the way. Thanks for all your videos. Really helps with trail section and planning.
That looks like a good ride. I don't have very many flat car-free routes where I am in NC.
Great Video of your Day 1 ride to Hill City from Deadwood. You captured the beauty and quietness of the trail
Great video of day 1 ride to Hill City.
For anyone considering this ride, it's a tough first day. 47 miles, mostly uphill, and soft gravel. Very rewarding scenery, though. The rest of the trail gets much easier.
Great video, thanks. I've also done the Katy and was wondering how the Mickelson surface compares -- 28mm tires were fine on the Katy but is this trail softer?
@@user-so5rb9xt6j In our opinions, the Mickelson surface is a bit more sandy. I don't know if they had just resurfaced it, but it felt lose, too. It was tougher riding for sure. Conditions could change, but that's what we experienced. Great ride, otherwise! Enjoy.
Would you ever consider the other direction in order to end in Deadwood?
Nice. Very relaxing. Great time of the year to be out and about.
Thank you! I highly recommend it in the Fall. We have days 2-6 up, too, if you liked Day 1.
Such great ride, looking forward to doing it again. What do you think about The Cowboy Trail? Just Subbed, Yo.
Awesome, thanks! We will be posting rides from this region we live in. Cowboy Trail is high on our list, but we haven't done it yet. Maybe we can sneak it in this year. But as of now, our plan is to do the Mickelson Trail in South Dakota. Ever do that one? Kansas has a few long, great trails, too. I forget the name, but it's like 120 miles. Those are the big ones in our area, I believe. Katy trail is so good. I wanted to tell you: if you do it again, check out Hermann. It really is an awesome little city. I saw you pass it up in your video and I was like, "noooooo, gooooo!"...haha.
