'Portsmouth Plugged In 2016' is part of the Portsmouth Festivities. For 10 days at the end of the June the Portsmouth Festivities capture imaginations, celebrate diversity and explore Portsmouth’s amazing heritage.
Portsmouth Plugged In is the collaboration of local writers and film makers. The films on this channel are used by local writers to create a monologue piece to be performed on the 24th June 2016.
Would You Like to Take Part?
You can find out all about it at - www.portsmouthpluggedin.uk
Or you can;
Pick one of the video starting points.
Use it as inspiration for a monologue, for example, if you use footage of the cars travelling at night, think about who is driving, their thoughts, where they are going and where they have come from.
Your submission should be no longer than six minutes when it is performed.
You will be performing in front of a screen with the video footage playing in the background. The performances will take place in Portsmouth.

Charlotte Street Market Portsmouth (1976-1977)
Before all the WW2 damage 😕
I remember when it opened, me and my mates used to go up and down in the glass lift making a nuisance of ourselves on mushrooms we picked near Leigh Park. There was the food hall in the lower level, they had 4 different restaurants ahh the good old days
This is solid gold!!
Wasn't there a Fine Fare supermarket in Charlotte st? I used to work there when I was 20.
Where's all the PIMCO film of the opening of the Fratton Road Pimco store etc..
Anyone remember the Welks and Cockle lady up one of the side streets on a Saturday.
Good to see Dinkie Benham, at 4:33 there. I was looking out for him. Gave me my first ferret, he did. And 'The Flower Girl', 4:10. Bloody kicking myself, trying to remember her name now! My old dear was always mentioning what they'd been chatting about. A? E? Can't remember. But, she always referred to her as " ... The Flower Girl ".
wow
"....and look what Portsmouth City Council's so called Progress has done?" Yes, you guessed correctly.....It's now a street devoid of everything it once was. Full of Pompey characters, a bustling market that stood there for years and a regular stream of customers with their families spending hard earned money. I hope I'm still alive to see the monstrosity that is the Councils offices in the Guildhall Square flattened by the demolition men of the future, hopefully with the staff still at their desks?"
This is how it looked when I was in my teens. I moved abroad in 1980 and so it always looks like this when I think of Portsmouth, thank God. Went back a few years ago... unrecognizable and the character of the city has completely changed, not for the better in my humble opinion.
Anyone remember john naylor. ( known as Flash) looking for a photo or video of him as he was my natural father. Born 1935. Died 1985. Used to have an ice cream van round.
I went to school in Portsmouth with Andy Naylor - 70 - 76. Never seen him since though
I remember the sweet stall. The bloke always sold what he called ‘Lick your a**e allsorts’
The film is a 'Monstrosity' in itself! I live in Manchester, my late Dad was born in Portsmouth, but grew up in the WEST COUNTRY, but was a volunteer in the Royal Navy for 9 years, as he would have had to do National Service anyway! He came to Manchester in 1952! dx
Growing up in Portsmouth I had so many weird dreams set in this station! Especially the platform at 1:46. There’s something eerie about it when it’s empty.
I miss so many shops in this. M&S. 3:57 Great food court, used it all the time. Decent clothes, reasonable prices back then. Cosy cafe with lovely cheese scones. Thorntons! 4:35 You can buy their chocolates anywhere but having a fully kitted out shop was so convenient for birthdays. I never thought I’d miss 2016. Back when I had extra money and a variety of places to spend it. 😔
Do you have anything or can get any footage of the lido please? That would be incredible
Sorry but the only monstrosity I saw was the logo at the start depicting that Awful tower!
What was the shop that is now subways, I know it was next to samuels ?.???
Looks like a Christian country. Not any more, sad to say.
great
I got my first pair of tonic Sta-Prest from Shirt King. 41 bloody years ago !!!! For The Specials, The Selecter & Madness on the 2Tone tour, 6th November 1979 at the Guildhall. My first ever gig at 11 years old, what a night!! Ah well, time flies whether you enjoy yourself or not. I have enjoyed most of it. PLAY UP POMPEY etc etc...
shirt king wow thanksfor that memory
@@kevinhutchinson9160 No worries mate. 👍
Yes every skinhead bought their gear from there. Ben sherman, shirts Doc martins and crombies Harringtons etc . More or less next to Shipps and Marks and Spencers side entrance . And across the way the rear entrance to Woolworths
I saw them at Reading University on that tour. What a treat that was. Saw many great bands at the Guildhall when I went to Portsmouth Poly between 1985 and 1988. PUP!!
I remember it like that
anyone else notice exclusively white faces everywhere ?? !!
That's what it was like back then in Portsmouth, very different from London
Well it is a predominantly white country. Well, was. Haha
Great to look back. I remember Shirt King and the Tricorn. Where are all the black people? Good days.
Who remembers the village ?
@@richardlockwood8430 yes, feels like it was yesterday.
I loved the commentary because I used to to Horndean from Gosport by bus and ferry in the sixties. The landmarks Iooked out for were...policeman at The George, Portsdown.....Goodwillies Crane at Waterlooville and Fodens garage at Cowplain which had been the tram depôt. thanks for memories!
The good old days
really ? i think the new good days will be better for humans
The vid is a monstrosity. Clueless.
Literally never seen this little talent
Thanks for sharing. Use to hang around there as a kid.
Me too, late 50s early 60s though.
Peynd yer Bananah! Tooo peynd yer perr!
pompeymeowth Haaaaaa - yeah, I remember him well. :-)
Happy memories
Thought I was reading Welsh for a minute 😂😂
Enchanting
Congratulations your jealousy has made Milo even more popular, I don't even like Milo but I'll probably buy his book just to annoy all the SJW's like you. The funny part is if you have that kind of attitude towards other hard working people just because you don't like their opinions, you probably will end up sitting on some steps sipping from the bottle like a pussy at lunchtime. Also being that fat isn't healthy, put down the fork fat boy.
you're a shitty writer go fuck yourself fucking hack
Great story,great voice.
Thank you very much Anne Connolly. I'm glad you liked my tale as much as I do.
💚
Another beautiful story from the very talented Rick Haynes. Save it, enjoy it over your coffee, a lovely story to watch ;0)
Thank you very much Beverley.
It was the best of times the worst of times, a descent into the disaster of encephalitis and a way back
Brilliant, made me laugh.
