"What is Happening In The Brain of a Child with ADHD?" The TED Talk They Didn’t Want You to See
One of my goals as an adult was to be invited to give a TED Talk. I’ve been a big fan of TED Talks since their inception, as I’ve always loved the idea of bringing cutting-edge ideas to the world. My work and research are undeniably innovative, and while the mainstream, conservative medical and scientific communities may discount it, I know it is scientifically valid and represents the future. The TED tagline, “Ideas worth spreading,” felt like a perfect fit for my work.
Eventually, I was invited to give a TEDx Talk. The process was rigorous-almost like an audition-but my talk was accepted. This particular TEDx program was one of the earliest in the country and was well-respected. I worked tirelessly for months, refining my presentation to fit the 18-minute format. The hardest part was distilling over 30 years of research into such a short timeframe. I decided to focus on two key elements: brain development and hemispheric balance, both of which I’ve published on extensively in the scientific community.
I rehearsed for countless hours, and when the day came, I delivered the talk, albeit with a bit of nervousness. I completed it in almost exactly 18 minutes, and it turned out exactly as I had envisioned. My wife, who was there to watch, said it was the best talk she’d ever seen me give-a high compliment coming from her.
This was right after we were emerging from the pandemic, a time when censorship in the healthcare community was rampant, especially for voices outside the mainstream. After delivering my TEDx Talk, I was eager to share it with the world. I was certain it would get millions of views and make a real impact.
However, I received a message from the organizers informing me that four talks from our program, including mine, had been red-flagged for further review. They explained that this had never happened before, and it was clear that the sensitivity of the reviewers had changed. They claimed I had made statements that were not considered “mainstream” and requested supporting research. I sent them over 100 references, including my own research and work from others, to substantiate everything I had said. Despite this, their final decision was to withhold my talk from the TEDx website.
I was upset. I appealed the decision, but they never provided a clear explanation. Even when I sent my most recent peer-reviewed papers, which supported all of my claims, I received no response. Over the years, I’ve shared the video privately with others, and everyone has loved it, insisting that it deserves to be seen.
There has been growing criticism of TEDx in recent years for publishing talks on topics that some find trivial while rejecting groundbreaking, innovative ideas. This feels like a betrayal of what TED was supposed to represent-the exchange of bold, forward-thinking ideas. I believe my talk was censored because the information was too advanced. Mainstream academics in psychology often don’t fully understand the brain the way I do, so they dismissed my work as something they couldn’t believe was true.
Because I have spent decades teaching brain science at the academic level and writing for parents in a way that makes the complex simple, my talk was easy to understand. Ironically, its simplicity may have been another reason it was rejected-it made sense to people in a way that challenged the conventional thinkers in the field.
In the end, this experience only fuels my determination. I will continue to publish more research, work harder, help more people, and ensure that my ideas are shared. Now, I’ve decided to listen to the many people who have urged me to release this talk. So here it is.
Censorship stifles progress, and I believe people are smart enough to decide for themselves what is valuable. I hope you take the time to watch this talk. If you feel it is truly an “idea worth spreading,” I encourage you to share it. Thank you.

Over the past few decades pop culture has created numerous lists to describe the functions of the right and left hemispheres. However, many of these lists have created more misconceptions regarding the 2 hemispheres than clarity. During this episode of Everything Brain, Dr. Melillo and Dr. Scire tackle these misconceptions by providing an in-depth perspective on brain laterality research over t...

Who cares what TEDx think.... seriously.... They rejected it because you dared to suggest that 'behaviour' isn't the issue. As a parent....I am so sick to death of being told my child has behavioural issues versus actual real neurological issues. To all other parents out there ....we have been doing the Mellilo Method for one year .,... My son has had enormous gains and it's been life changing for him and the rest of the family.

Wonderful talk! The mind is inherently embodied. We are engaged in an ongoing process of converting our sensory motor experiences into a formal structure, into a framework that can orient and guide our thinking and reasoning. Sensory motor inference is cognitive inference. We are projecting from the sensory motor domain to the cognitive domain and the inferential capacities of the sensory motor system are baked into the process. Imagine being in a situation where all you have to orient and guide your thinking and reasoning is the inferential capacities of your primitive reflexes. Imagine that due to a lack of vertical integration the conduit through which that information must pass doesn't have the capacity to represent the information in a one to one correspondence. You would have to group together certain input patterns as you transfer information from the source domain to the target domain. Some examples of this grouping together of input patterns would be categories, stereotypes and generalizations. If the target domain doesn't have the capacity to reconstitute the information to the level of one to one correspondence then you are stuck with your categories, stereotypes and generalizations to orient and guide your thinking and reasoning. Neural beings initially categorize, stereotype and generalize, it's a consequence of our neural architecture. However the extent to which we do this is a reflection of the developmental process. A disability is simply an ability that you didn't acquire at a certain stage of development. At each stage of development we acquire new abilities. The application of each ability in the order that they were acquired constitutes the order of operations for an embodied protocol that is our birthright. This embodied protocol must be in alignment with evolution which is phylogenically ordered, development which is ontogenetically sequenced and learning which is functionally progressive. Why? To answer that question we first answer this question. What is the connection between evolution, development and learning? All three phenomena are iterations of the same process expressed over different time frames. An iterative process that is missing step will always be incomplete and tend to result in errors that will be repeated in subsequent iterations. I hope I've added something to the discussion. Have a beautiful day everyone!

Focus on the attachment. Spend twenty minutes a day present with the child, no screens, doing something the kid likes to do like blocks or a toy or activity or game, and do not do the parenting "correcting" during these twenty minutes. It is about presence with their being, correction here will only undermine the point. It will help with the behavior.

The majority of disabled people....ARE NOT GIFTED. Those who are physically disabled have a greater likelihood of being developmentally delayed and/or impaired...a likelihood greater than for the general population. Those who are solely delayed and or impaired are obvious cases. There is a very small percentage (between 0.3 and 0.6 percent depending upon the study) of individuals who are physically disabled and intellectually gifted....about 1/15 of the general population. These are actual verifiable statistics.

I don't really see autism as something that can be changed. And personally, I wouldn't want to change my brain. Autism definitely hinders some things in my life, but I don't think I'd enjoy writing as much as I do now if I didn't have it. Ido understand that it can be debilitating in some cases, though. I also have a friend who has adhd and is a rubix cube speedrunner, great at math, great at piano, and memorized binary code. I don't really know if there's a link, but I think there is.
