Could Fusion Energy Be The Gamechanger Our Planet Needs?
Fusion could be the ultimate source of low carbon energy, but achieving the process on Earth is no small feat. What will it take to unlock its immense potential?
As Sir Ian Chapman explains, technology is essential to success, but it's not the only factor. To deliver fusion and scale its impact, we must also build a new sector from the ground up.
Sir Ian is CEO at UK Atomic Energy Authority - the country's national laboratory for the development of fusion. UKAEA's mission is to lead the delivery of sustainable fusion energy while also maximising its scientific and economic benefits.
By undertaking fundamental research and working with industrial partners today, they aim to create a landscape that can support fusion power plants in the future.
Fusion is currently at an inflexion point. It's inherently safe, sustainable and can replace fossil fuels as a source of baseload energy, all of which adds to its appeal. What's stopping us from reaping the benefits? According to Sir Ian, the process itself poses difficulties.
To achieve fusion two atomic nuclei must be fused together. The collision releases energy, but also requires it in staggering amounts. We are yet to build a plant that produces more energy than it uses.
The obstacles are real, but according to Sir Ian, not insurmountable. Technology and industry both have a pivotal role to play. Intensive capital is needed to scale, but with the world of opportunity it represents, fusion is a challenge worth investing in.

Is Hydrogen The Quickest Way To Create Clean Energy?
มุมมอง 7K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Clean hydrogen has a vital role to play in the global energy transition. Renewables are powering more of our world than ever before, but not everything can be electrified. Sectors like transport and heavy industry require intensive energy that renewables can’t supply, making them especially hard to abate. Hydrogen can help to decarbonise these more demanding aspects of our economy, but this vis...
How Namibia Is Leading Africa’s Green Hydrogen Revolution
มุมมอง 5K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
Green hydrogen is a key enabler of the energy transition. Unlike conventional hydrogen, which is often produced using fossil fuels, green hydrogen is the result of an electrolysis process powered by renewables. This point of difference doesn't just reduce emissions - it's also shaping the geo-economic landscape of an entire industry. As Toni Beukes explains, for countries in the Global South wi...
How Can We Make The Promise Of Clean Hydrogen A Reality?
มุมมอง 2.5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Hydrogen has the potential to advance the energy transition, but the industry’s current infrastructure needs to be redesigned to support clean hydrogen over its carbon-intensive alternatives. As Mike Adams explains, this radical shift is possible, but changing the industry will first require a change in mindset. Mike is Senior Vice President of Capital Management at 8 Rivers: a climate technolo...
How Clean Hydrogen Can Accelerate the Transition From Fossil Fuels
มุมมอง 6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
As the most abundant element in the universe and a potential source of energy, hydrogen has long been considered to have a key part to play in making the transition to a low carbon economy. But how and where does it fit in? As Ivana Jemelkova explains, we can use hydrogen as one of the foundations of the energy transition. While electrification promises to help decarbonise many sectors of our e...
How We Can Recycle Waste CO2 To Create a New Carbon Economy
มุมมอง 65Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Carbon is the basis of life on Earth. It's found in every living thing, from human beings to bacteria. How did it become the enemy? Carbon dioxide emissions are the most significant driver of the climate and biodiversity crisis, but we must be mindful not to demonise carbon itself. As Jennifer Holmgren from LanzaTech reminds us: "Everything we use, everything we need, is provided by carbon." Si...
How Carbon Capture And Storage Can Help Us Address Climate Change
มุมมอง 23Kหลายเดือนก่อน
To meet global climate goals, we need to capture and store a billion tonnes of CO2 by 2030, and around 6 billion tonnes by 2050. As Guloren Turan explains, a challenge of this scale requires a multitude of solutions. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) refers to a wide range of technologies that capture CO2, either at large emissions sources like power plants or industrial complexes,...
How Can We Remove Greenhouse Gases From The Atmosphere?
มุมมอง 25K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
To preserve our planet's future, we must rapidly cut global emissions - but how can we also address the damage that's already been done? As Steve Smith explains, greenhouse gas removal (GGR) is any human activity that removes greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, captures them, and durably stores them away. As a senior researcher at the University of Oxford's Smith School, Steve is currently wo...
