Is This Europe's Best Designed Neighborhood?
People value excellent urban design. And that's a great thing! However, great urban design can also make areas expensive. Nordhavn in Copenhagen is a fantastic neighborhood with incredible urban design practices. It's also pretty pricey. In this video, we'll look at why good urbanism can make places more expensive and a few solutions that could alleviate the issue.

    Thank you for this superbly crafted, informative, enlightening, and inspiring video! Watching from the Netherlands, I am utterly impressed and excited. Clearly, the mayor and his fellow citizens had the courage, tenacity, and vision to create a vibrant, flourishing, and inviting city where people enjoy congregating. The message is simple and direct: To create memorable places, build attractive, walkable communities that tantalise the senses. Cars, wide roads, car parks, malls, and strip development can never transport one to... nirvana.

    The problem with suburbs in US cities is that markets, shops, cafes etc are located very far from homes, so people are forced to use cars just to go buy bread. To solve this, you have to put the shops, markets, cafes etc close to homes, close to houses, this way people will only need to walk to buy their food, because the shop, market, cafe etc will be close to their house, and in this way the use of cars will be very low and the streets will automatically be designed and focused on people, with large sidewalks, town sqaures, parks etc etc, where people meet and spend pleasant moments and meet new people. etc BRING THE MARKETS, STORES, CAFES ETC VERY CLOSE TO HOMES, AND NO ONE WILL NEED TO USE CARS ANYMORE.

    We chose to move to West Virginia for our retirement. The stunning beauty of this state is its most valuable resource. In the six years we've lived in Mercer County, we've seen growth and improvement. Because the economy has been strong we've seen an uptick in tourism. A new National Park is also drawing tourists to the point where surrounding towns are experiencing growing pains. The problem of poverty in West Virginia will change as the coal industry dies out. A focus on quality public school education is crucial to future generations.

    A lot of suburbs around Indianapolis are starting to adopt the building practices Carmel has pioneered. Westfield, Fishers, Noblesville, Plainfield, Brownsburg, and Broad Ripple have all built “city centers” but none yet on the same scale as Carmel. Avon has a population of 50k, and literally never even had a downtown, just started moving dirt for their city center development. Carmel has set a model that can work in any suburb in America!

    This is incredibly impressive. Huge kudo's to the mayor, he is aptly 🧠named! I would think that underground parking would be the way to go. Yes, maybe expensive on the front end, but it hides cars from sight, it puts people where they want to be: in the shopping center. You don't have to heat/cool the place because it's below ground (same temp year round), AND you can even charge both residents and shoppers to use the parking garage. Put auto-scan parking tags on cars, like tolltags, that can be 'refilled' automatically when the parking funds get low. Charge residents $50-$60/month for parking as part of their rent, and shoppers, maybe a scalable price: $10, $20, $30, with funds taken out as they're used. Turn off the parking charge for special events like at Christmas. And if folks move out of the area, they can get any monies left on their 'tolltag' refunded to them. BTW, does the mayor 'school' other mayors in other cities on how to do things right like Carmel has done???

    Northside native here. What's really unfortunate is that there's a saying said a lot around the area. "Nobody in Indiana likes Carmel except those who live in Carmel." The idea of sprawl is so integrated in the culture here so Carmel kind of makes a lot of people upset. They have an affluent community, a fantastic public school system, and a lovely city. People like to hate on success, especially when they are not a part of it. Personally, I do not and have never lived in Carmel, but the short drive to Carmel is always worth it for me. I love that city and the walkability is fantastic. As an enjoyer of the arts, it's a wonderful reason to be there as well. I was fortunate enough to go to sound tests when the Palladium was being built and have been there multiple times since. The art around the city is amazing and you can often find performances throughout. They have invested in their city and it is paying off in huge dividends, and on top of that, they use that to continue investing in their city. Carmel's design has been so successful that nearby cities such as Noblesville, Westfield, and Fishers have all started adopting parts of what they do into their cities raising the quality of the cities around.It is certainly unlike any other part of Indiana I have been to, let alone the rest of the country.

    Carmel use to be a place to want to live and if you'r retired and don't ride a bicycle athletically it still might be, but for anybody else you likely don't want to live there anymore. I live in Indianapolis and most people hate having to go through Carmel Indiana ether in a car or on a bicycle on what they've done to the Monon Rail-Trail bicycle parkway. 0:38 This was the Monon railroad corridor. It should have a Rail-Trail bicycle parkway, but Carmel turned it into something less. Having a pedestrian way, which is on right, if done correctly should pull pedestrian traffic away from the bicycle path, but all the pedestrian traffic is walking two abreast on the bicycle path. Carmel also demeans bicycle use with a 15 mph speed limit in the Monon corridor where arterial bicycle paths should have a minimum design speed of 30 mph and Rail-Trials are far superior to that. It is likely better to use the parallel street for bicycling without the loopy treatment Carmel has done to the Monon bicycle parkway and its legal to go at normal road bicycle speeds. This is why bicycle parkways have to be protected by their own administrations. Parks departments and municipalities destroy them and seek to discourage various forms of normal bicycle use. Carmel has used traffic circles prolifically as traffic calming devices everywhere which deter through traffic. Note: Many of these are dangerous multi lane traffic circles 0:48 not a modern US roundabout which is a very specific type of traffic circle of a single lane with operating speed between 10 mph - 15 mph using yield merge traffic metering. Roundabouts should process traffic better than all-way stop sign controlled intersection, but are always detrimental to traffic flow of the primary road compared to a traffic light controlled intersection. True roundabouts themselves have good traffic records, but they are disorienting if having to go through more than one in a few minutes. Busy roundabouts encourage jumping into them above their preferred operating speed maximum of 15 mph depending on vigilant attention of other entering traffic. This behavior causes people to run stop sign intersections in the same manor, but without the primary road traffic being vigilant causing broad side T-boning. I saw that behavior where the stop sign running vehicle behaved like they were entering one of the many true roundabouts in Greenfield Indiana causing the car in front of me to crash into it. When looking at traffic crashes the effect roundabouts have on treating stop sign controlled intersection in the same manor has to be considered. Both intersecting roads need to be at about the same traffic volume; in other words they are both primary roads, with a lot of left turning vehicles for a roundabout to out perform a traffic light. Roundabouts for intersecting roads with speed limits above 40 mph no longer save time over an all-way stop because even though not having to come to a complete stop to go through a lightly used roundabout the time spent at slow speeds to go around the roundabout compared to accelerating away from the stop takes longer. Putting roundabouts on high speed roads with speed limits above 40 mph encourages performance skid control of trying to take a 15 mph roundabout as chicane at 50 mph. High speed roads with speed limits over 40 mph should not have roundabouts. There may be situations where a traffic circle in busy semi-truck areas facilitates easy semi-truck turning around. Multi-lane traffic circles are dangerous compared to other intersection designs using traffic lights. It's understandable in Carmel why an individual neighborhood would want a roundabout entry to the primary road because it puts their traffic at typically low wait times to enter the primary road and makes a left turn into the neighborhood easy. That comes at a significant inconvenience and disorientating looping around to through traffic on the primary road over the use of a traffic light. If that happens more and more it becomes hell to try to drive anyplace.

    • @erossie1
      @erossie1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You obviously hate roundabouts. I lived in Arizona where the aged population demanded they be removed......and they did it. Now, when I go back there, the roundabouts are back. Frankly, when I approach one of the small handful of traffic lights in Carmel, I'm sure i feel like everyone else and get annoyed and ask, 'when are they going to pull this thing out and put in a roundabout'. They're safer and faster. They do take a couple of weeks for newcomers to practice and get used to. They're obviously overwhelmingly loved by most because the cities around Indy that used to mock Carmel for roundabouts are putting them in faster than you can believe.
