Taped from Tonite Show in Oz early 90's.Hot guitar sound. Jack was rippin. They were known as a pop band. We knew they were hot muso's. At least Australia got a small taste.

This now has video. Sorry about the quality. Will add more songs soon.It was in 1990 at the corner Hotel in Melbourne Oz. The same place where the Planet x live cd was recorded. It was just me holding a handy cam and the vhs is pretty worn.
Thems were the days
The song is ''The Odyssey'' by ''Pyramid'' a great Aussie Jazz Fusion band featuring David Jones and David Hirschfelder
What's Phil playing? Looks like a Yamaha Pacifica but surely not.
Yes, He mentioned on his interview with Rick Hollis how much he didn't like the sound, and specifically mentioned this performance. He said something like, "it had a thin magonany body... hear how weak my sounds is compared to jack's"
Ridiculous
A bit Hans Valen showing.
Great guitar player, but he should be finger picking the bridge part. Anyway, came here for Virgil.
Just exemplary. I saw all these songs from the very first Son's Gig at the Grainstore as well as The State gigs earlier. These are the killerest players of their time to be charting with pop rock guns and ballads and rocking live originals trading this caliber of solos to packed room gigs and outdoor Australia Day concerts. NEVER will we see this compositional strength combined with supremely qualified player force. Just astronomical. Who on earth could press thumbs down let alone watch it and not press a thumbs up? Only those who know it's going a bit fast in this live gig, but who'd know unless you have The State album Elementary! :-) I got one!! :-)
bruh this is the literal meaning of swag
Irwin is very talented
That's bulshit how good they are a absolutely amazing
Pure gold man!!! Thanks a lot for upload this
was my fav. pitty the sound is not that dynamic and mono. Have the train tracks ep with this live...
The best!!
It went next level after the version on the The State album!!
Yeh the studio version was not as good in the state ep
The whole collective of talent in this band is exceptional on a world stage. Phil and Irwin are obvious.... as is Virgil.. But check out the stuff Geoff and Pete are doing and it's mind blowing!! I was privileged to work a little with these guys in the 90's as a monitor engineer and I was PFL their respective monitor sends and constantly being mindblown!!
@@poppsy69 Yeah totally agree, but still a great track. Irwin wasn't in the band for a few more years and remember they recorded that entire album on a Fostex ½" 16 track and mixed it in Metropolis later (I think) (anyone correct me if I'm wrong). I still love playing that CD loud!!
Best drum fills ever man
So Jack is probably about 17 years old here. F@*k me!
He was born in 1970, so probably 20 yo.
I'm just assuming this is 1988, he was born in Jan 1971.
Hans Valen
that in the basement of the Grainstore in Melbourne?!
Fark - that is amazing, Virgil and Irwin.......
To this day I have never seen a better guitarist play EVH then Jack Jones....forget about TH-cam im talking in the 80's until now....this guy is the KING!!!
+smoo thy amazing wasn't he his vocals on "you really got me" were awesome too i am amazed that he didn't push his guitar talents more - he did a better job of evh than everyone else . . . but he didn't have the benefit of youtube and other videos to learn his trade :)
+nelson schumacher Yeah I saw Hans Valen and Jack about 6 months prior to him morphing into Southern Sons.so it would have been 89...... nobody even attempted this stuff in the 80's except for Hans and Jack so there was no better lead guitarist doing this except EVH himself.
"Elementary" was the name of the album too :-)
Love this song & album by "The State"......The single from the album was "Real Love" & got airplay which was great. I still love listening to this album & this was before Jack (Irwin Thomas) was in the band, but I think from memory at the same time that Jack was playin with Virgil in "Hans Valen". This track & "Someday" were the stand outs for me on the album!
Geoff Cain (bass from SS, The State) was also in Hans Valen. Around this time Jack was also playing in a fusion band called Gnomes Of Zurich - my memory is hazy but I think it was a similar lineup to HV; Virgil, Geoff, Stuart Wilkinson on keys. They were doing originals, as well as covers of Eric Marienthal (the sun was in my eyes), Los Lobotomys (big bone), The Crusaders (cause we've ended as lovers), Steve Lukather (smell yourself), Toto (Rosanna)... I had a cassette recording of one of their Grainstore gigs, which I still kick myself for losing.
@@sirgarence nah Gnomes Of Zurich was much later after The State changed names to Southern Sons…! Gnomes of Zurich played The Grainstores on Thursday nights and did Fusion Covers,John Schofield,Los Lobotomys…Gnomes consisted of Chris Becker on Bass, James Roche from Bachelor Girl on Keys,Virg on the kit and Jack on the Charvel…A mate of mine recorded The Gnomes Gig on his walkman and we converted them to disc
@@jonocrawfs1381 How funny, I went to a bunch of Gnomes gigs but clearly I never took much notice of the lineup other than Jack & Virgil. I do remember their opening number was an absolute banger, and Jack's tone (Bogner or Soldano, I don't recall which) brought a tear to my eyes. I don't suppose you'd have a digital version of that recording available somewhere? I'd kill to hear it again!
@@sirgarence as stated yes we converted the walkman recordings to cd…! I couldnt help but notice the line up simply because it was sensational…Becker is a great bassist and James Roche was and is a gun keys player…James played in Tommys Electric Band back in the early 90s with Rex Goh and Rob Little on Bass along with Kev Murphy on the skins…What a band that was….!!
@@jonocrawfs1381 Do you reckon you could rip the CD to MP3 and upload it somewhere like Dropbox? It'd be a blast from the past to hear it again!
I was lucky enough to see a few Virgil gigs (On The Virg, Gambale/Donati/ Fierbracci, Virgil Donati Band) and yes - I remember looking around and just seeing jaws dropped everywhere. Amazing!
Saw Virgil with Loose Change at The Grainstore quite a few times. Awesome band. Awesome drummer and a really nice guy. I met his mum once at a gig!
Are you sure this isn't Animal from the Muppets?
Virgil Donati is awesome
Even with the bad audio quality, it sounds absolutely MASSIVE! Virgil is a monster....
Well, i like to eat garbage occasionally. The rest of the time I just complain that I have to share the world with idiots who have NO CULTURE but whose consumer pull encourages s**t head musos to get paid above talent. Once again.. i hope the world chokes on its garbage.
what's with you and choking?...
I played with Virgil on on the virge at the evelyn in '96 - best experience of my life.. never forget it. He is every bit the gentleman (and he millions of times better in person) See above comment...I hope the world chokes on the musical garbage it has encouraged.
Because all modern music is S**t. The majority of audiences are made of w**nkers. Good musicians have to give up gigs to idiots paid $300 to push play on a CD player. I hope the world chokes on what it has created.
The fantastic and charismatic Peter Goldsworthy on lead vocals!
own! I was two years old!
VIRGILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
I used to go see these guys play all the time at Styx essendon airport...some of the best nights were had there, when they were playing.....they were soo damn good
That was the best live venue! I flew down from Darwin a few times to see bands play there (and to catch up with some mates). Loved it!
No problem :)
Cheers man, thanks;)
Check my channel and look for The State :)
Is this song on an album of theirs? Was it recorded or is this live version the only one?
This song was originally performed by previous incarnation of Southern Sons called The State. It's a great tune, but this version is a TOTAL KICKASS!
Remember seeing Hans Valen at the Old Lion in Adelaide many years ago was fantastic, Jack Jones can really play that axe, Thanks for posting these awesome, Shame there was no clearer ones
Remember seeing Hans Valen many many years ago at the Old Lion in Adelaide they were awesome. Love Van Halen and they did a fantastic job, And Jack played just like Eddie
This song is originally from Southern Sons? I have the discography and did not appear :s
HE NEVER PLAYS 4/4 ANYMORE
@HunterDT NOWADAYS VIRGIL DONATI DOESN'T CARE ABOUT IT ANYMORE
never underestimate the power of MONAURAL!!!!!
@tonfan Australia doesn't realise or is so naive, blind, deaf or plainly hooked up by these bogan footy/sport stars that they have some of the best musicians in the world right on their door step! Virgil Donati is flooring people overseas yet apart from musicians no one knows or cares about their own (Virgil Donati) doing amazing things overseas.
When it comes to Music, Australians have no idea about quality music, simply because Society has a brain the can only comprehend very basic music. Your right @65Magnifico some of the greatest musicians in the world are home grown here in Melbourne…Phil Turcio is a monster keys player and world class in every way…!
Thanks for putting this up it does stir some memories. Me and a drummer friend used to go see them around Melbourne. Virgil is awesome :) A few things about the footage-you may notice some people with long hair at the front-they are guys not girls hehe And notice they are not rocking out jumping up and down like most people at pubs/concerts. That's because they are musco's that know the talent in front of them and if you could see them from the front they would all have their mouths open!
i have a vhs copy of this :) loved it as a kid! notice 'banana peels' at 3:42 - the form of this solo is explained by virgil on the tape; if i remember correctly, his concept of practicing double bass drums at the time was broken into 4 parts: 1) the feet on their own first 2) playing figures in unison with the hands 3) hands and feet interacting in linear coordination exercises 4) dealing with bass drum ostinatos.
join my band you clown!
One of my favs by a fav. Dude, this is nice very nice.
but the Cutters really had some life and balls.
Does anyone know if there are any old Cutters video footage out there ? Live or Clips? ~ cmon Phil dig some out and upload em for us - :) must have some from the ol studio in Ringwood days ?
