Don't exchange in Mexico. Always exchange in the US. You will usually get 1 peso more per dollar.

So you need a US based account to use Dolar? a Canadian bank with a US dollar account wont work?

Fellow Canadian here in Mexico. The EQ Bank in Canada has a Debit MC that has no forex fees on their end at all, and I've found that it's far and away the best rate of exchange during my time here. Highly recommend that as an option for travelers down here, don't bring USD or CAD down here, just a debit MC and a credit card. ✌️

I moved here in October to Mexico, I'm getting nervous that when my Chase Amazon credit card expires and my Wise card expires, am I going to have trouble getting another card sent to me? Are they going to make me verify my address in the US which I no longer have...and when I say that I'm not living in the US anymore are they going to cut me off? I use both of those cards for everything!

I felt the dollar app got a bad rap, people were getting rid of that card because people had money lost on it? I could be wrong but this was all over some channels. I live in Mexico and use wise card.

To use the card in Mexico, do i have to put funds into Mexican currency via wise before hand or can I just have my CAD amount and it will do everything for me on the fly at the bank machine? I guess simply put, do I always have to convert to the local currency before I use the card in that country? Thx.

Wise is not presently issuing ATM cards though! I've got a personal Wise account and love it. Everything you're saying is spot on - EXCEPT, you can't presently get an ATM card from Wise (at least not if you live in the states). I tried to open another account recently and the process clearly says, "Not available yet". After many attempts at different account types, etc I called them. Apparently in July 2024 they had to stop issuing cards for "internal" reasons. The person I talked to says that they're being told that they're trying to resolve and working to be able to again issue cards - but no clue when this might happen (or if it actually will happen). As of today (25Jan25) you still can't get a card. The lack of a card completely defeats the purpose ...

We've used WISE in MX for last 5 years. I like the immediate ability to exchange online for best rate. Going from a bank rate of 13.6 to online at 14.3 is a big bump. Many places use the tarjeta now

I read that if you have a Canadian Scotiabank account and use the Scotiabank ATM, there is no fee. Can anyone confirm this?

I am currently in Mexico and a little trick I learned in making a cash withdrawal from Santander bank ATM is after the Button to accept the fee ( right now it's like 34.1) you will get a screen that asks if you accept or reject the current exchange rate of the BANK not the current "exchange rate" to that you can answer NOT to accept button lower left on the screen, this will not stop the transaction, but simply give you the National daily exchange rate which can differ from the bank itself. Next time you use it check it out, you can save quite a bit... one time the rate was a little over 19 percent nationally and the bank was only offering 17 percent. so there ya have it!

Get an online Charles Schwab checking account debit card. It gives you very close to the true exchange rate and charges no fees whatsoever. Any and all atm fees are reimbursed, so it doesn’t matter how much the machine is charging. Of course you still have to decline the crazy conversion rate.

I've gotten both my sons to get Wise and our youngest son's girlfriend got Wise before they went on a trip to Roatan. While they were at airports in the USA on their way, they could use their Wise card just like a local, which of course saves you a fortune on exchange rates, because you buy currency when the rate is best for you. I moved to Mexico in 2022, and I use Wise to transfer my rent to my landlord in pesos, then my new landlord in USD. It's so easy and saves me a fortune on fees and exchange. Over the past few years I figured i've saved several thousand dollars with Wise. Highly recommended to everyone.

Not sure if this was already mentioned but if you use your debit card to withdraw cash always decline the exchange rate offered at the machine. It is a scam. Your home bank most likely will offer a better rate saving you a lot! People often think declining the exchange rate means the transaction will automatically be cancelled but it won’t be.

what is needed to register dolarapp? How about the physical debit card? Mailing to a Mx domicilió?

looking at Dolarapp now, does not seem like a viable solution as a Canadian as there was no way to deposit Canadian currency. it only accepts US currency Mexican pesos and other Latin American currencies to charge the account am I missing something?
