Maintenance of the OFFGRID HOUSE
The offgrid house has everything on its own - water, electricity, heat. It is usually necessary to ensure the operation of such a house as well as maintenance. For me personally, this is the minimum we can do to live as comfortably as we can afford.

    why you use cardboard?

    • @OffgridEarthship
      @OffgridEarthship ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the question. When you put clay into the tire, the clay would fall out. Even when you put tire on cross two tires you end up with salience (if the term here Is correct 😁) or just some space in the air which has no bottom. When you put cardboard there, you create bottom of this free area And no clay can fall down. Once the tire is pushed up with clay it Is so squezzed together it will hold so it does not matter if it will be wet. Furthermore, plaster will be put on the wall so no clay can fall away anyway.

    It may take years but the water might get clearer if you can get enough plants to grow. Maybe start with rooted floating plants and some submerged plants in the shallows. We have an established natural clay pond with non-brown water some times of the year. Depends on the season and the rain. The mud is very deep.

      @@OffgridEarthship I am learning every day about ponds, but one of the main reasons I think that a clay pond will have brown water all the time is if you put big fish in it. They stir up the bottom all the time. Little fish are OK. I recently released some big fish and am hoping they do not survive out there. The pond already has little fish in it and is quite clear and nice about half of the time. Hope this helps. Large turtles which we have seem to be OK.

    have you ever looked at dew ponds as a way to retain water if you have clay? It is an ancient method used in the UK where you build a pond that you insulate with material like straw the dew over night settles in the depression it is not just relying on rain.

    • @OffgridEarthship
      @OffgridEarthship ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info. I did not know about that. It looks interesting, but i might pass trying that. We have so much source now to fill all big elements that it would just be ordinary little pond like we have here already and dew would definitely not be significant source. Well as i am thnnking about it more IT would make sense to use it in the highest point but we already have plans with that place. But thanks a lot i will suggest our children if they want to try And research more of it 😊

    Just a friendly recommendation from someone who has studied earthship biotexture for many years. You should really cover the tire walls with clay. Especially any of them that are within the home. The tires off gas and it is very harmful over the long run but when you seal them in clay it stops it. Also the sun shining on the walls will heat the rubber and make them off gas even more.

    Is there a base layer under the earthen floor, or do you just put it right down on the original ground? It looks like the original wax layer is very thick and very smooth, how did you get it that way and what is the wax mixture? Also curious how you installed the basalt stone tiles? I really love the way you guys did everything! I have never seen earthen flooring with stone tile.....very cool, and however you did it, it seems to be holding up very well.

    • @OffgridEarthship
      @OffgridEarthship ปีที่แล้ว

      The floor: - on the original ground we put hydroisolation (in our area needed) - then some clay we dig up from the land, mostly clay and mixture of sand and clay - then there is layer of clay and gravel (for strengthening) - next clay and sand for level comparison. In this layer it splits up. Either we continued with the basalt stones or with earthen floor. - final is very fine sand and very fine clay. I know it sound repetive but the bottom layer is just what we dig and the most top layer is the finest what we could accomplish 😁 - then the oil and wax. The top layer is very smooth thanks the patience and japanese trowels. The wax mixture is beeswax and fermange. - basalt stones are put on layer clay and gravel. They are glued with clay and very fine gravel mixture. They come with slightly different height so each tile must be adjusted individualy. It took whole day to put down 4m2 without paving tiles. It looks so cool but the work behind that we still don't know if it is worth it 🤣The stones are holding very well and they have properties working as expected!

      Yes, we are very satisfied with the results :) There are two thngs we would do differently to get this house be more efficient. Firstly is cooling which we got really wrong. We used too short tube behind the earthship and it is now working properly. Second thing are side windows - there are two and are wonderful for light and view and visually very appealing but in terms of efficiency - if they weren't there and instead was wall burried in dirt like the rest of the walls, it would protect the house more from heat loss.

      I was following on socials the build of german earhthip which was supposed to be community center. I did not like the amount of concrete they used but I get that is was necessary. Great for them to fnish it! Hope you get to build what you want, wish you the best! :) The thing with the temperature is that it is every year slightly different but also you need to know what is the comfortable temperature for you. We do not want to go under 19°C. But we strongly believe that the temperature would not go under 15°C without heating. Firstly when it is the darkest in november/december, it is not yet the coldest temperature outside and inside could be heated by accumulated power from clay walls and floor. Secondly when it is really freezing outside, it is mostly sunny so the sun is heating. And then there are days between those two scenarios where you do not need to heat but you will not get as high temperature as you could get with the heating. Also heating with just firestove and accumulative stove will be different. Next thing, we use heating in stoves also for heating the warm water so we kind of want to heat. Another thing..it is pleasure to have fire at home, our kids love to start the fire, it is our evening routine and we love it :)

      Thanks. Well our house would stay at 15°C So no heating needed actually in Winter but that Is not comfortable temperature for us so that Is why we use rocket stove.

    It's been ages since I saw my grandparents do it and since I live in the city I don't have to care about clay floor any longer, but I'm glad to be able to see how this was done again it brings back memories.
