Victrola VV-IV Governor Rebuild
RELEASE ALL SPRING TENSION PRIOR TO REMOVING THE GOVERNOR! I shouldn't have to say it, but I must, or someone will forget.
Enjoy, leave comments, link to it.
I need suggestions for my next project too. So let me hear from you please. We are a just a small community of those who love these old phonographs and every one saved from the scrap heap is a good thing.
Thanks,
Jerry

Rebuilding of a Victrola #2 Reproducer. My second video, a How-To, is a step by step rebuild of the Victrola #2 reproducer. This video has been a long time in the works. I have probably cut and edited it 4 or 5 times before I realized I was trying for the unobtainable goal of perfection. So please, enjoy the video, leave comments, thumbs up or down, and above all support TH-cam and Archive.org....

Watch the video to see a brief biography of Ruth Etting in photos and music. This is my first video for what I hope will be a long and productive series documenting singers and songwriters of the phonograph era. The wind up phonographs themselves and how-to's on how to keep your Talking Machine in tip-top shape. View more music and videos at www.archive.org/

    After discovering the Love Me or Leave Me movie with Doris Day several years ago, I just had to find out what the real Ruth Etting was like. The very first time I heard her sing I was mesmerized. There aren't very many singers who can do that to me. She was just quite simply marvelous! 😻

    Wrong. Adjust the stylus bar against the diaphram only after attaching the back.

    That was fun. Thanks. Quite a tapestry of life's mercurial romp. Ten Cents A Dance. A bit of flesh. A singer who wears a beautiful song. So much more engaging than today's obvious sell.

    I recently bied a new portable gramophone and noticed that the governor stripes were broken, so I was wandering which material should I use to build new ones? Like steel or nickel? Do you have any suggestions ?

    Hi Your tips are fantastic and I was able to remove the motor and board from my VV-IX clean the motor, regrease, works great however I now can't get the motor and board back in so that the crank and motor line up! PLEASE, before I wind up drilling a two inch hole on the crank hole please tell me the trick. The board is the original, it's not warped and I'm going nuts. PLEASE tell me the secret. Thanks and keep the great vids coming but most of all STAY WELL!!!! M

    I recently acquired my rare Leophone wind-up phonograph yesterday, and it runs okay, tested okay, and it slows down, so I did sprayed with Silicone lubricant and it runs well. But when I checked, it has a spring motor underneath filled with red grease, but it needs to be cleaned off and it should be run once again. Leophone, a name that you have never heard of before was a brand which was based in Ahmedabad, India, and it was an Indian made phonograph which was made back in the early 1920’s, and it’s now considered as a rarity for phonograph collectors. Right?

    be aware, if you remove the governor with a fully wound mainspring it will INSTANTLY unwind and break itself. also if you remove the end bearing DO NOT let the governor hang unsupported, it will bend the bearing shaft on the other end.

    That's an easy fix. All Victor Victrolas has a 2-spring motor, and it is an easy repair job. My Victrola VV 8-4 which is the cabinet model has a 4-spring motor instead of 2.

    You don't describe how to replace the rubber gasket. You just show it during disassembly and when it appears during assembly--a miracle has occurred, and it now has new material! Please describe how you obtained the new material, and how you applied it to the metal ring. Thanks in advance!!

    Were is the retaining clip for that second spring drum's lid? running it with the lid loose like that will have the springs grease coming out. Also it should be said that the governor has a slight bit of "play" when the bearing is tightened down. you get a feel for it once you have done a few of these motors, many first timers like to push the bearings down tight so the shaft has no end play, this is not good, leave a tiny bit of endplay. The Victor 4 or 6, IV-VI are great machine to break into acoustic phonograph collecting with, Victors basic motors, easy to work with, especially the little 4.

    Great instructional video, very detailed! Just remember to hold off on sealing the fine screw with wax until the diaphragm gaskets have been compressed. By sealing it early in the video you can’t balance the needle bar after the gaskets compress causing the diaphragm to shift. Put it on during assembly to center the diaphragm, but don’t wax it until the very end when you will want to remove the fine screw to balance the needle bar. Also the white glue is unnecessary.

    You are correct of course. The main reason I showed full disassembly was that many people like the do a full spruce up while they are in there. Clean and lubricate, replace the end bearing, etc.

  • @Jimmyhaflinger
    @Jimmyhaflinger 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    isn't it easier to replace the springs without removing the governor shaft from the motor?

  • @Ecksterphono
    @Ecksterphono 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    A lot easier than an Orthophonic. Those are next to impossible but i have done it. And making or stamping out a new diaphragm out of the leaf paper thin aluminum is an art. Its like surgery on an eardrum. One cant really do a link video on these pot metal devices. Only when the bezel. has been artistically pieced together can one do a video up. I have done many orthophonic reproducers with success but its not easy

  • @Ecksterphono
    @Ecksterphono 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another suggestion for a proper governor rebuild is a proper balanced one. Each weight for a victor VI should weigh 20 grams. If not the heavier one or uneven one can cause the brake yolk to vibrate causing chatter and uneven speed control eventually the unbalanced weight can cause egg shaped wear on the brass yolk also cause spring strain and weakness which can cause the the spring to snap and fling into the case. always make sure the governor is balanced.

  • @Ecksterphono
    @Ecksterphono 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sometimes through time the speed brake bracket will slide causing miss adjustment of speed that is why they went to an updated single barrel 2 spring motor to permanently fix the sliding brake bracket no matter how hard one tightens the screw i make small nubs on either side with J. B. weld making sure the brake bracket still can be removed this puts an end to the sliding problem. Adhesive underneath the brake bracket does not work due to the expanding and contracting of the different metals

  • @Ecksterphono
    @Ecksterphono 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is a victor Victrola 6 not a 4 the 4 had a single spring motor not a 2 and the motor of the 4 houses inside the wooden horn.

  • @NashvilleFiles

    Great videos! Oiling, greasing and checking/maintaining the overall motor would make a good one.
