Stories of Low German-speaking (Dietsch) Mennonites living in Ontario.
Low German Financial Literacy Video “Managing Money in Ontario” Part Two English
Financial Literacy Video “Managing Money in Ontario”
Suffering, poverty, and hardship in Mexico have brought many of us Dietsch people back to Canada. Living in the colony in Mexico, most of us have had little or no experience when it comes to dealing with financial institutions or renting a home.

Many of us Dietsch (Low German-speaking Mennonites) did not have the opportunity to go to school and learn as children growing up in Mexico. In this video, we show you that we are willing to go to school as adults and learn what we have to in order to build a better life for our families living in Ontario Canada. This is neat, as someone who was raised in Aylmer, Ontario, who went to the old colony Mennonite school, this is interesting. I did kindergarten through grade 6 at OCCS, continued my education through Davenport Elementary, graduated high school at East Elgin SS, then completed a degree in Nursing in London, Ontario. We low German Mennonites have come a long way.
My great grandmother, along with her younger brother immigrated to the United States in the 1890's. She was from the area around Hannover in the north, and spoke Low German, or Plat Deutsch as they called it.. She was gone before my time, but I can remember my Grandma and her sister speaking it, along with some of the old neighbors. It was different from the High German taught in schools and they had a hard time understanding it. Some of this sounds familiar to me, but I never really became fluent in the language.
Jesus is our only hope not religious systems
What do you mean the year 100?
This Low German sounds heavily influenced by the High German consonant shift and other sound shifts that probably were caused by Anglo meddling, real low German is very hard to find nowadays
What do you mean by high german consonant shift? That was a development in southern Germany, Low German is a northern dialect. The pronunciation of the "r" sound is anglicised, but the rest is basically the east prussian low german dialect that's almost died out since Germans there were forced out by Poles.
Wir haben Mennoniten hier in Südbrasilien, die vor dem russischen Kommunismus fliehen. Es gibt zwei Kolonien Neu-Wittmarsum-PR und Aceguá-RS. Ich segne dich.
Lol I love our church music in the background
Why not move to the USA.....?
There’s a bunch of us here
sounds Gaelic!
Is it possible to visit your community? I'm 25 years old I came from Guadalajara 3 years ago, and always felt attached to menonites but my friends and family persuade me from getting closer because judgement, for over a decade I supresed my feelings, and now this feeling had grown strong er, and I would like to know why. Where can I contact a menonite community that's is up for nonmembers of the community to visit? Thank u
