Hi Keith I did just that with my fuel that had a lot of water in it. I rigged it up with a small electric fuel pump sucking fuel out of the tank through a filter and then a hose going back into the fuel tank. Worked like a charm!

I like seeing old equipment brought back to life. As long ss it turns it will run. Those liners look fine for what's needed. I'd expect smoke initially but once some heat gets through it at a fast idle speed, it should be ok as long as the rings aren't too stuck in the grooves. I've seen piston rings free up and reseat themselves really well on several occasions. Great work and nice to see the younger generation taking an interest in saving them. Edit: Just to sdd i recently freed off a mildly stuck Ford Mustng straight six engine using ATF Dextron III down the spark plug holes. It gets past the rings nicely to free them up and has cleaning properties in it too. It ran great and the owner is still happy with it. He thought it would need a rebuild and it was fixed for nothing.

One significant problem a solar powered boat would have would be winter. With poor weather and short days, you would not get much power to the batteries, so not many miles could be gained (I.e. none!). You’d definitely need your old boat motor as well. Summer river or canal cruising should be doable though on just electric. My car has a 100kw motor (about 136 hp) and a 50 kWh battery. They are quite compact units, so could be fitted in addition to a standard marine engine. Used battery packs go for about £3000 to £4000, so it is not cheap, but not crazy either. The combo will do about 140 miles at motorway speeds, not sure what that could do on water. There is also the additional engineering to allow both drivetrains to access the same prop shaft to consider. Might google this to see if anyone has already had a go, I find the engineering challenge involved is intriguing.

    • @Keithsbrokenboats

On mine one comes from the start position on the key. The other goes to earth. Mine is a standard solenoid. There are two types of solenoid filled to this engine. The standard and a switch one. The switch one uses the mounting plate as an earth and the second wire goes to the ignition coil live side I think.

Running rough on start up could be a faulty choke (is yours an automatic choke. I’m having issues with mine). You need to check your getting fuel into the carburettor. Take the top off and give the throttle linkage 3 to 4 pumps, you should see fuel squirting out the jets into the primary barrels. You will need to hold the choke open to see down into the barrels when you do this. Idle needles need to be turned in so they just touch the seat and then backed out 2.5 to 3 turns. Lots of small passage ways inside the carburettor that could be blocked. When you had it in bits did you blow everything out with compressed air? Let me know if this is any help.

@@Keithsbrokenboats Hi Keith. Many thanks for that, lots to check. Didn't think of the idle so will give that a go. When it ran rough it sounded like too much fuel - ie choke stuck on (yes it's automatic) and there was fuel dripping into the carb from under the choke flap when the engine was stopped, which initially led me to believe faulty float/needle valve. However it's still doing it with new parts and seems to come from a point much higher than the float chamber. Finally could you tell me how many turns out you have the mixture screw please. Thanks again for your help to date, I'll keep you informed with progress. It's really odd as it started and ran OK at first. Thanks again

I had my mixture screws out 2.5 turns Sounds like you have a needle valve issue if the fuel is coming out in between the air horn and carburettor body

@@Keithsbrokenboats Thanks for your reply. I thought needle valve but I've just replaced it. However I'll strip it back and check. Also think I may have a faulty coil - the + wire is 12.6v but drops to 9.6v when connected. Coil resistance 2.6 ohms. Ah well, the investigation proceeds! It's really odd as it ran beautifully after the new impeller, but gradually got worse and worse until now. I'll let you know progress. Thanks again. All the best.

Oh yeah. Another thing! The Medievals were Police-less. No Constabulary either. No Emergency Services to help you with situations back then, Centuries Ago. Can you imagine that?! No 999 Number Call.

Beautifully explained, now I understand how it actually works and it is obviously worth checking. What seals the end plates to prevent leakage - I didn't see any gasket? Many thanks for posting, your videos are really helping me to understand my engine.

The end plates are sealed with a rubber gasket which looks exactly the same as the end plate. I should have mentioned and showed it. Thanks for your interest and comments. They are very encouraging and make me want to get on with the next bit. I’m waiting for parts at the moment

@@Keithsbrokenboats Great thanks very much. A item to be checked for bits of the impellor as the bulk of it was welded to the sides of the A drive inlet area. Ah, the things we do for relaxation! Thanks again, kind regards.
