My Cedar Generator Shed
I need a generator setup that would be easy for my wife to use if I was out of town. Starting out, I was going to build this shed out of reclaimed pallet wood. Then I remembered my son in-law (the contractor) had salvaged some cedar board from a remodel job. He'd tried to give them to me once before, but I didn't have a use for them at the time. I built this thing without a real plan - just different ideas I'd seen on the interwebz. The best internet tip I found was using cement blocks as a heat shield. I'll brag that the door/ramp was my own idea. Once I saw how nice the cedar was looking, I decided to go a little fancy on some details. Hope you like it!

    This is constructed perfectly! If you don't mind sharing, what was the cost of the project? (excluding things like power tools)

    • @doughoag
      @doughoag 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hard to say what the total cost would be. The cedar was free from a demolition project and the other lumber, insulation, and cement were leftovers I had in my garage. The fan, roofing, gas struts, and misc. hardware - I probably had $250 invested. Still looks and works great 2 years later. I did add an exhaust pipe exiting left side.

    Thank you for posting this video. Did you end up creating plans and cuts list for the project? The plans would sell well on Etsy. Especially if they included the SketchUp file :)

    • @doughoag
      @doughoag 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks. Unfortunately, I just had it pictured in my mind and started measuring and cutting. Measurements were dictated by the size of generator and the fence that makes up the back wall. I was just lucky that everything fell into place.

  • @xxRock81xx

    Nicely done, I like others wouldn't have put it so close to the house, co2 has a way of getting in, and I might have missed it but would've piped the exhaust out of the shed. You have the exhaust fan on the wrong side in my opinion, the generator has a fan housing that is ment to push air from the pull cord side toward the genset/exhaust side and the exhaust fan is pulling in the opposite direction. Fresh air vent in the pull cord side down low and exhaust vent on the exhaust side up high because heat rises would have been better. Beautiful shed though.

    • @doughoag
      @doughoag 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did end up piping the exhaust over to exit on the same side as the fan. I discovered that the carbon would quickly plug the air filter. I know what you're saying about the exhaust fan placement, but I didn't want it pointing toward the house. As far as location, it was the only practical location that I had available and has worked out quite well.

    Have you had to make any changes to prevent water infiltration? The louvres concern me since they appear to be inset.

    • @doughoag
      @doughoag 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've not had any issues with water infiltration, but I will make the following notes. All of the wood is either cedar or ground contact treated pine. The opening around the louvers and around the top frame edges is surrounded with butyl flashing tape. All of the exterior surfaces were stained with PPG Flood CWF-UV (as is my fence).

    • @wyndward
      @wyndward 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A few reason’s in my experience include the surprisingly high cost of running 220 generator cable to the house from longer distances, a generator closer to the house sometimes feels less likely to be stolen and a desire to not move the generator noise closer to the neighbors house than it is to the owners house.

    I tried looking - how are you venting the exhaust? - I personally do not want to extend my exhaust pipe, I would rather just run it through a vent of some sort. Are you running the exhaust through a vent on the structure?

    • @doughoag
      @doughoag ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't do any modification to the muffler. I simply have it facing cement patio blocks for insulation against the heat. The louvered fan on the side of the shed draws plenty of fresh air through to remove the exhaust to the open air. USE CAUTION if the exhaust will be blowing near open windows or an enclosed area where people or pets might be exposed.

    Did you do anything for the Exhaust? does it get hot inside while running?

    • @doughoag
      @doughoag ปีที่แล้ว

      Cement patio blocks along the back wall to protect heat off the muffler. Exhaust fan keeps the fumes cleared out. On an 80 degree day it topped out at 88.7 inside the shed after 20 minutes of running. If you’re close to a place where fumes might enter your house, then you would want to pipe it away somehow, but this spot doesn’t present an issue for us.

    I've been planning to do the same, but I've always heard to keep it further from the house? Like at least 20 ft. Maybe construction is different where you're at. We have vents every few feet in our external soffits

    • @doughoag
      @doughoag ปีที่แล้ว

      Carbon monoxide is an important consideration. My soffits don’t present any exposure to living quarters, and there is plenty of air dispersion from this location. We do have CO monitors in our home, but I don’t foresee any problems in our location. CO certainly needs to be a consideration when choosing a location and design.
