Salisbury University students perform in ancient sites for a course that fuses theatre and archeology.
1:12 haha, that money, good video.
I suppose you know that the toga finds its roots in ancient Greece, right ??
The himation was a rectangle and the use of wrapping a rectangular piece of clothe around the body to create a garment honestly pre-dates Greece. The curved shape of the toga, as I reference in the video, seems to have its origins with the Etruscans - a culture that overlaps the Classical period in Greece. Early Rome was more influenced by the Etruscans than the Greeks, even if Greece would eventually have enormous impact - particularly by the elites.
I love toga. The roman senators look so dignified in toga and carry it with grace and ease .
Very informative, thanks.
4:15 to the guillotine...wait we haven't invented that yet. All the engineers of rome,,, To the guillotine. AH
I'm 50 and going to my very first toga party. Since alcohol tends to many me lose clothing at least I will have some extra at this party. Lol
urine is much more useful than we typically think.
Yeah, just stop drinking it. I know you drink it. Also, stop using it to "heal" wounds. I know you do it too.

This type of clothing started from Hinduism oldest statue of this clothing found in india which is 4700 (believed all started year 12 to 15000 year ago ) old and still hindu priest, yogi , buddhist monk , jain monk wear this in india and other hindu , Buddhist land
Dude, the oldest statue of women India is not in such developed clothes, even statue of dancing woman of Indus vally civilisation is found naked. Modern Sari is highly influenced from Greek and Roman gestures through trade and political relations. Buddhist Gadhara styles are strong associated with Greek gestures.
Since the most basic shape to weave is a rectangle, it is the oldest shape to use for woven clothing and goes back to Egypt in 4400BC. Who first wrapped themselves in clothe in a more creative way would be very hard to pinpoint. What is unique about the toga is that it is curved on one side - a much more difficult shape to weave and, thus, creates a different shape when draped on the body.
Toga! Yeh!
This hurts me to my very soul. I hope you are happy.
Si hoy usaramos tunicas a diario y togas para las formalidades, ahorrariamos tiempo y dinero ademas de ser mucho mas refinados, aparte de andar comodissimos.
wat?
+Obi-Wan Kenobi "If today we had used tunics daily and togas for formal events, we would save time and money, as well as be much more refined, apart from being comfortable."
Although it might be more elegant, I don’t think it would be more comfortable. 7 yards of wool is not only difficult to manage during any activity, but also quite hot! In Rome, or much of the world, wearing that much fabric most of the year would be quite uncomfortable. But, comfort has only recently become a sign of wealth. Ironically, in the past, if your clothing prevented you from easy activity was a sign of wealth. The more uncomfortable you were exerting yourself (ie...corset, tight clothes, many layers of drapes to keep in order...) meant that you needed servants to help you. The poorer you were, the more your clothes had to be comfortable to allow you to do that physical labor.

Very informative video! As for the smell, though, urine treatment was relatively early in the cleaning process and followed by immersion in rinsing solutions with clay compounds so I doubt if any of the residual ammonia smell remained.
Thank you Mary. I think that is a very good point.
I love people with as much knowledge as Mary!
Watch my new video on the toga!
