My eldest sister came of age in the Vietnam Era. I remember her sporting a large afro and wearing bell bottoms, and my parents’(born in 1920 and 1922) disapproval. Unfortunately, I was too young at the time to appreciate the significance of the country’s massive cultural shift. Thank you so much. This is fantastic!❤

For me the addition of the parents is such a brilliant example of what a transformative impact can be made in a single choice about a single beat. Really glad I watched this staging--i won't forget it.

What a wonderful memory it stirred in me. I saw the original in 1969 on NYC.

I like that they add the sadness part to the Let The Sunshine In. Too many people think of the 5th Dimension's upbeat, happy version and then that nothing-but-happiness makes it into productions like this.

That's because when the curtain falls they all return still singing Let the Sunshine In invited the audience to sing along and even go to the stage to sing with them. And then it is all joy. At least it was like that when I saw the play.

One certainly doesn't get that from the cast album. And I understand why. The cast album focuses on making the best song rather than worrying about telling the story.

It was always sad. In the original productions it ended with the tribe leaving the stage leaving Berger alone who would take two sticks and put them in the sign of the cross over top of Claude’s corpse and that staging is still done by many productions to this day, with many variations, some including Sheila next to Berger mourning Claude with him and others had the have the whole tribe mourn Claude together. Then after the curtain call, the cast starts singing Let The Sunshine in a happy mood and has the cast come on stage. Televised cast performances on tv shows like The Tonight Show and The Ed Sullivan Show showed them singing the song in a happy tone to not ruin the ending. Still, there’re directors who don’t have an understanding of any of that, think Hair has no plot, and end the show with the tribe singing and clapping happily with no care that their leader died a tragic death in Vietnam and killing whatever morals the show can pass on to the audience.
