I was introduced to Shostakovich 5 in high school summer camp with the Finale as a sight-reading activity and didn't understand it at all (playing the violin). Later I was introduced to Shostakovich more properly in youth symphony playing his 9th, which is still an outlier. In college I finally bought my own recording of the 5th so I could start my own exploration intoShostakovich properly, and I had this recording on cassette tape. I'm so happy this was my first true experience absorbing the brilliant 5th with Maxim conducting. It was educational in how a score can sometimes not necessarily reflect true intention (referring to the controversial ending tempo). I've had the honor of playing this symphony complete four more times, and only once was the conductor brave enough to finish the symphony like this. It was so utterly satisfying. Getting to those last moments in rehearsal with the other conductors, and realizing they were taking a galloping final tempo was always disappointing and completely took the wind out of the sails every time. Thanks for the upload.
