Having fun with DIY Projects, fabrication, and building things from scratch… sometimes comically scratching my head trying to figure out what to do!
I’m Tom. I grew up fixing things with my father who gave me a love for all things mechanical. I hope you will join me as I dive headfirst into some crazy projects.
At about 8 years old I wanted a go-cart. I got one, it had been sitting in a barn for years, so it was covered in “Stuff” and didn’t run. He told me if I wanted to ride it, I had to do the work myself and he would help. I’d ask how to do something, and he would ask me questions until I figured it out. That started my love of fixing broken things. More times than not along the way I would see ways to make something better… at least in my opinion.
I hope you will join me while I revive my love of building, fixing and improving cars, trucks, motorcycles, expedition vehicles, fire-stations and much more.

John Deere 410 Cold Start
มุมมอง 1802 ปีที่แล้ว
It was about 15 degrees out and I needed to get ready for a delivery of an M1078A1 military truck. So I decided to start the old girl on camera.
Good on ya for taking on such a fun project. I was glad to see you have quick success in the govplanet yard. Got it running pretty quickly and loaded! Nice! I bought a 1999 Stewart and Stevenson M1083A1 (6x6) from GovPlanet in Hawaii. She was a runner. I was able to drive her to the shipyard!!! Best of luck on this project!
Mitch, that's great you were able to get a 1083 in HI. I have two M1078's from GovPlanet neither of them ran when I bought them but one does now and will be turned into an expedition vehicle. It's going to be a fun series because I designed a mounting system that allows the frame to move freely under living quarters without stressing it. I have looked at trucks from HI but haven't found a way to get them back economically yet. Were you able to get yours back. Also thanks for the encouragement on this project its a fun challenge.
I'd love to learn more about your sub torsion frame that you built for your habitat to eliminate flex stress. I'm planning to do the same. I'll be building a habitat on mine as well for an overland expedition vehicle. Love to share info as we go on this journey! Btw, that electric fan custom job you did on the forklift was brilliant. Love that! Great idea I got a ridiculously good deal on the 1083A1, but had to ship it RORO Honolulu to Oakland. Shipping was about $4,700 I think. But truck shipping would have been even more expensive if I had bought it somewhere a few states away so it worked out pretty dang cheap.
I bought the forklift so I could do the heavy lifting for the Expedition Truck build and I have wanted a forklift for years. The next videos for the forklift will be getting the cooling fixed. Then I have to dive into the brakes which were a challenge and finally figuring out why it isn't moving correctly. Sounds like you made a great purchase on your 1083A1 from HI. I looked at a few but the shipping gave me pause. So I ended up buying both of mine in the mainland. Yep I have two. Actually they will both be builds but they are addictive. LOL For the Expedition truck build I will have a whole series chronicling the whole process. I hope you will follow along and yes I'm open to sharing info so let's stay in touch. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and hopefully you will find my videos entertaining and informative.
What could possibly go wrong?😅
Yeah, well as it turns out a lot! LOL Which you will see in the next video.
I subscribed and liked. I am looking forward to more from you.
Thank you, I have another video coming out tomorrow morning.
Reality check..99% of the LMTV " Overland Mall Crawlers" are never completed ..those who have easily have 6 digits into them... Who knows maybe you'll be the 1 in 100 that actually completes their build ..only to get .30 cents on the dollar when you sell ...
I appreciate your optimism and support.
@@scratchfab It's a statement of fact..just as Neil V , Sean F or Chad how much they have invested in their "Overland Expedition Vehicles"..or better yet the dreamer who was asking $450k for his M1087 build out on Cars and Bids ..it reached a max bid of $95k. No sale. The 1087 was parted out for $75k.... Sorry...
Leon, no need to be sorry for expressing your opinion. I appreciate you and Winifred taking the time to comment. I hope you will continue to follow along and who know you might even become a fan.
I'm not sure about the 99% stat, but I understand your point. I think a lot of folks underestimate the endeavor and expense. And it seems like @scratchfab is having fun with these projects. I know I am. I bought a M1083A1 and I'm having a blast working on it and driving it. It's all new to me, but shoot it's a great truck! Additionally, while Chad and Sean are dumping a ton of money into their rigs (no doubt), they're also having some great adventures in them as well. I've got a friend who's driven his finished overland rig up to the Arctic and down into the Baja and so many other places. And he's having a blast. So best of luck to @scratchfab. I hope you enjoy the journey!
With your thermostat housing being broken beyond the gasket area I am surprised you did not have the flange welded. It use to be very difficult to weld cast, yet with preheating and proper welding rods it has become very successful to repair this type of damage, with also having a controlled cooling period of the casting. The replacement was $950.00 welding would have been $100.00 or less.
Welding was an option I considered but there were two problems with welding first the break went through one of the mounting holes and the second was the fan hangs off the thermostat housing which creates a lot of torsional stress. So in total it was a bad design to start so it didn't make sense to fix it. The fan and parts were inexpensive and gave me a better solution in the long run.
New subscriber, good stuff thanks Man.
Thanks for subscribing!
Needs a paint job.
Hey that's patina! LOL
Nice portable shop! Tail of the dragon!
Thanks, its a small space but I have a lot packed into it. Also I will have videos coming out early next year where I restore a Fire Station which will give me more space. Hint this forklift gets used in it. Tail of the Dragon is a fantastic ride and that area has so many amazing routes!
When Gov-bid says it runs, they mean when the bought it new, it ran.
Very true, fortunately it was in a yard close to me so I had seen it in person before I purchased it. I figured I could get it running but had no idea if the hydraulics would work.
Hey man, we're not your wife, you don't need to explain why you bought the backhoe.....lol
Subscribed, I like 'field rescues' and as a one man shop with 8 forklifts, I ........have a thing for old forklifts. It just wouldn't be an old forklift if the brakes actually worked. What did you pay for it? Nice effort!
Thank you and very true on the brakes. There were a number of challenges to get them working. I will put out the videos getting the brakes to work in a couple of weeks. The next challenge is to really go through it and start working on what needs fixed. Specifically the cooling system it was a challenge. All in I have about $8,000 in it. I bought it to do the lifting for turning my M1078 LMTV into an expedition vehicle. I appreciate you subscribing and hopefully you will enjoy the videos.
Why do you have Utah plates on your military vehicle?
Colorado won't license my M1078.
How do you keep your shop so organized?
Its difficult with a small space like I have. I hope you are enjoying the rebuild so far.
You live in that recognizable house! Saw it on Zillow and driven by it many times going up to turkey creek
It's great to see the support good luck and hopefully you are home soon.
That wasn't a fire station- it was the original Phillipsburg dance hall.
You have bad information that is the fire station. The dance hall was much bigger and one story.
Is it for sale ?
No
Hi Tom, You came up on my Facebook notifications. A lot of projects, enthusiasm and creativity. I found your first video to be informative and entertaining. I will stay tuned. Much success to you!
Thank you, I have hired a video editor so I will be posting weekly. Hopefully you will enjoy the projects.
Hey Tom, good to see you again (even if it's on a video! : ) That backhoe will come in handy when we dig out that hillside and install the waterfall that you're going to hire me for!! 😁
Wow what a blast from the past, what are the odds that my new channel would get shown to you! Interesting idea putting a waterfall in after the fire station gets moved to its final location.
Right on Tom. Cool stuff and Happy editing!
Thank you it's been fun and challenging so far. I should have the first forklift video out this Sunday.
Have you weighed your camper to find out the true weight of it?
No
Cold starts usually consist of no starting fluid and no block heater
That's one way to cold start
