Richard Lui - Selflessness | Intangibles 062
Richard Lui is a journalist and news anchor for MSNBC and NBC News. He was formerly at CNN Worldwide. Lui is also a columnist, contributing to publications including USA Today, Politico, The Seattle Times, Detroit Free Press, and San Francisco Chronicle. In 2020 Lui directed the documentary Skyblossom which profiles five families, each with a student providing care for a veteran parent or grandparent with disabilities. This where today’s topic, selflessness, comes into play. Seven years ago, Richard walked into his supervisor’s office, prepared to give up his dream job at NBC, having just learned of his father’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis. As in the documentary, Richard was compelled to care for his father. It turns out, there was a comprise to be reached with NBC. It also turns out that what Richard learned from that time in his life became the basis for his book ‘Enough About Me - The Unexpected Power of Selflessness’. We are going to get the benefit of that learning in our conversation today.

    I found this podcast after finishing an iFIT training session with Dr. Jarrod Spencer about Relationship Anxiety. While listening to that messaging during my workout, I appreciated how much I was able to relate to it. How much I was ignoring “mental” self care, and how it influenced my household and family. I sought out more information, and I appreciate what you both shared on this podcast as well. I’ll continue to seek out more from Dr. Spencer, and it looks like Steve is also on that list now.

    That we have a long time is a foolish thing to assume. It might take forever, we might literally not be smart enough to do it at all (Obviously it can be done, we are an example of GI), but we should also make a single breakthrough tomorrow that fixes all these problems we currently have with a single solution (much like the last big breakthrough solved dozens of existing issues), or maybe it's just a scale issue and we will breakthrough accidentally one day as a tech adds more tensor units to an existing AI and it 'wakes up'. Also, it doesn't have to be a great AGI to screw us forever. It only needs a noncognitive advantage to the point of superpower in a single area and we might never be able to overcome that. My point is that we have to be ready for the malignant instantiation right now regardless of how far away we think the possibility is. It's the Batman vs Superman problem. We have to assume that it will destroy the world. (And no it doesn't bleed)

    • @IntangiblesPodcast
      @IntangiblesPodcast 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have one thing right... planning close or far, incremental or full-on AGI, is folly. Everybody has an opinion. Nobody knows.
