This is the channel for my track day videos. I don't do street racing.
12/14/2024 86 Challenge Rd 10, Thunderhill 5 Miles with Double Bypass, Street Class GR86
It is an 86 Challenge tradition to have a rainy day in the last round of the racing season and this year is no exception. The first 3 sessions were in heavy rain and people just spun randomly on track, including me. The 4th session, however, the sun came out and the track was drying rapidly while we were competing. The best lap was the 2nd last lap of the day. I was on a -2sec delta in last lap but the session was ended before I can cross the finish line. But still, I won the P1 with just 0.007sec. And overall end of year 3rd place in the street class.
I somehow enabled zooming feature on my action cam and didn't notice it. So the view angle is a bit weird. Sorry about that.

Nice weather today. Did a few 1:54 laps in the first session but unfortunately ran into some traffic in a good lap. Later today the weather became a bit hotter and the car shifted from neutral to a bit understeer, which cost me a lot of time at T6. This is also the first track day on Bilstein B6. Overall it is an upgrade to the OEM suspension. But due to higher air pressure in the shock, the ri...

Not my first time in Thunderhill West in reverse layout but last time when I was driving this variant was almost 4 years ago. It took me a while to re-learn the track. I think I mad the right call to remove the Annex CSP coilovers and put back the OEM. The car, while has much slower load transfer now, absorb the bump much better. I still left plenty of time at the 3 U-turn turns but after sessi...

First time driving at Buttonwillow with this layout and I came here without much preparation. The car was also using a new sway bar setup that makes car an oversteer machine, which didn't give me much confident. I did poorly at the off ramp turn and didn't max out the grip at most high speed turns. Need more practice. Mods list: 86 Challenge street class build (2pt) 245/40/17 GT Radial SX2, 30 ...

It was session 2 of 07/03/2024 GGLC Event. The Honda Integra in front of me missed the apex of T10 and aggressively oversteered. Fearing it might hit the wall and bounce back, I immediately braked, tried my best to stop before it. Luckily, except for I putting two wheels into dirt, nothing happens.

After 2 months of rest, I am finally back to track. I didn't drive my GR86 at all in the past 60 days and now both the track and the car felt unfamiliar to me. In the following 3 sessions, I changed the rear damper setting back to 10 and changed the front to 9, 8 a...

An average driver in that Porsche should have walked away easily. Porsche electronics, suspension, chassis, pdk is so good it elevates a mediocre driver to below average.lol. That was not even average driving since Porsche was missing all apex. What Porsche gives you is if you are average driver it makes you great and if you are great it makes you exceptional.
The quality on display here is incredible, this is very entertaining to watch
Any oil pan baffle for this event? Those oil pressure drops are a bummer
No, in this video, the car has no baffle and no oil overfill.
nice job man
Here to see when you make it big 🙌
Nice driving, well done!
Awesome driving! 🥰
nice lap! , Do you have the machined Verus oil pan installed? isn't that a V3 version?
Well this lap was far from nice, but Thanks 🙂. I have the Verus large oil pan prototype installed. I think it is v2. The v1 was the one used by @900BRZ. I don't think they have a v3 now.
@@nostreetracing86 Verus calls the one @nostreetracing86 has v3 actually. v1 was technically made before our involvement. v2 is on my car.
Great hot lap. There were a lot of great drivers on Sunday. I was in a white 23' #728. I had a few similar struggles going through Star Mazda and Riverside as well.
Wow, oil staying around 230 is impressive. What were the ambient temps? I was seeing 260F at the end of 15-20 minute session at road Atlanta this weekend. Running 5w-40 so not super worried but am jealous of your temps! No oil cooler?
I have a Jackson racing oil cooler. I saw 242F peak, which was a bit high but it should be OK.
Congrats for the effort. The oiling upgrades seem to work. The 0.7qt overfill is not ideal though, I assume that you tried no overfill and had drops?
Yes, I tested it at BW#13 with no overfill and it has some drops. So I have to overfill it a bit to make it work.
@@nostreetracing86 Thanks for the info and the data you share.
Any comments/observations on the oil temps? Did the oil pan affect them in a significant manner?
@@sikrip Oil temp wise, I didn't see an abnormal rise of temp on track compared to my previous SYMS pan (which is based on an OEM pan). On the street stop and go traffic the temperature seems to be about 10F higher in 80F ambient. When the car is moving, the temperature seems to be similar to my previous pan.
That does not look fun to drive. 😮 At least not for my old hands and inability to get more than 3 hours of sleep the night before a track day. 😅 I gave up on the 19mm rear bar and 400f/450r (7k/8k ish) spring rates. Just could not get the car to feel right. I went back to 450f/550r (8k/10k ish) and the car was immediately much happier. Not entirely sure why, but the rear does seem to stay in sync with the front over bumps better, which actually makes it ride smoother than the previous softer setup. I don't know if the shocks also play a role in that (I'm on MCS 2WNR). I now have my Perrin 22mm front bar full soft and am back on the stock 14mm (BRZ) rear bar. The car still has a bit of push, but can be rotated well with the brakes on entry, and will oversteer in power in third. Your stock 15mm rear bar, possibly on the outer holes on the LCA, would probably be even better. I'm up around -4.0 camber in front and running stickier tires, tho. So maybe not applicable. 🫤
Yeah, I feel the rear is really unstable. And with an unfamiliar track layout like this, it punishing me from finding the limits. My front 22mm bar was set to soft and rear 19mm bar was in the middle. But except for the balancing issue, the shock I use also doesn't like the bumps and curbs at BW. The car frequently upset itself over large curbs, to the point that I might switch back to OEM suspension for the next event. I tried my friends car which has MCS 2 ways without remote reservoir. It handles the bumps and curbs much better my 1 way annex. I might switch to MCS next year.
@@nostreetracing86 I want to upgrade to remote reservoirs. But they're a bit of a way down my priority list. 😅 I tried moving my rear endlinks from the middle to outer hole on my rear arms yesterday, and it was a good improvement. The car rotated better in the slower corners, keeping a higher min speed and getting back on throttle sooner. I think I still want a bit more, though. But I think I'm probably done for the year. We're really getting into the rainy season in the PNW. I think if you set your front bar full stiff, and rear bar full soft on the inner hole on the control arms (if you have enough endlink articulation), it might bring you into a more manageable window. If you're still camber challenged, that extra front roll stiffness would probably be good, too. As a hail mary, you could even try swapping front and rear springs. What spring inner diameter do the Annex coilovers use?
@@grippgoat I gave up on Annex stuff. I think their damper profile (curve) just don't meet my need. They are single adjustable and only for the rebound. My opinion (which may not be correct) is that it has too little low speed compressing damping and a bit too much compression damping. And since that is not adjustable, the car doesn't react happily on bumpy tracks or high curbs. The balance can be adjusted using sway bars, but not damping. I cannot do much about it unless I opt for a revalve. I am switching to Bilstein B6 and aiming for a 0pt suspension mod under current rule book. In this case, I can use the extra mod pt for something else. I measured the coilovers, the outside diameter of the spring is 82mm. I cannot measure the inner diameter since I haven't take out the spring. The shock diameter is 52mm.
LOVE the TS-V fitment. Any rubbing or other issues with that wheel and tire combo??
I need a pair of 10mm spacers in the front. With that, no rubbing issues so far.

What was it like going from GT86 to GR86? I’m sure it happened a while ago I just found your channel and was curious what you thought:)
My GT86 was a 2013 model year FR-S, by the time I put it on track the rear shock was already leaking. After that I have put some aftermarket coilovers and later PPBRZ shocks. With PPBRZ shocks, the GT86 actually handles a bit better than stock GR86. Better entry at turns and exit is more stable. The GT86 also has a linear throttle response while GR86's stock throttle tune feels more like a ON/OFF switch (40% pedal will cause the actual throttle open to 80%). The GR86 has more torque so it is faster on the track. But overall, my GT86 gave me more smells on my face.
What camera setup are you using? I've got a similar location, but using my phone and man is the sound quality and vibration bad.
It's a Insta360 ace pro with external mic near the exhaust. Stabilize set to low. Overlay was done using RaceRender.
@@nostreetracing86 thank you!
How do you have your camera mounted? I haven't found a way I like yet in my GR86.
I used an item called "Tackform Headrest Mount". You can found it on Amazon. Mounted to driver side headrest. It still vibrates but is less severe.
Looked like a great day to be at the track. Nice save. Glad everyone was okay.

Nice driving! What a great track 😎
How do you like the Annex Coilover?
I would say it works mostly OK as a 1-way coilovers. But it has limitations. Also the one I received is a inverted design prototype. The shock's stoke is a bit shorter than regular version, I think that limits its performance a bit at bumpy track like BW.
Looks much better than 2 months ago.
Nice driving! Also, your oil pressure mods seem to be working very well.
This is a CCW track so mostly left turns anyway. Only turn 4 has a bit issue with oil pressure.
Still, I have seen drops on the downhill "s" (the right turn of it) but you pass there without any issue.
@@nostreetracing86 1qrt overfill is what most guys are doing now. Do you worry about sloshing or no? I drive my car to and from the track so I question overfilling 1qrt. Right now I overfill 1/2qrt.
@@autosenses2960 In my case I am not too worried. I recently installed a catch can and it doesn't seem to catch a lot of oil per track day (a few mL for Laguna + to and from the track). I also don't daily my GR86. But we do see people with 1qt overfill burns oil at start up some times so I would not say it is completely safe. Another way is to overfill the oil at track and use a tool to extract excessive oil from dip stick port when you need to go home. It is a bit hassle but may worth doing.
@@nostreetracing86 Yeah that’s also a great option. I don’t daily my GR either. But I do like to drive it on weekends in the AM. I overfill 1/2 qrt. Just a bit passed the max line on the dipstick. I AutoX at Limerock, which is basically a mini track/circuit with curbs and all. No cones/parking lot. It’s still high G 3rd gear corners. 🤷🏻♂️.
Your screwup moments are always slideways. Mine seem like they're always braking too late or not hard enough, and trying not to understeer off the track. 🙈
The screwup moments is a great teacher for car control.
awesome videos! syms baffle + slight overfill solves the oil pressure drop problem for track days? thank you!
With a low grip setup, those strategies mostly keep oil pressure in an acceptable state. I won't say it makes it a "no problem".
Really interested about logging oil pressure in my 86. Is this done through CANBUS with the aim solo2?
I have a small DIY board to read pressure from a sensor I installed to the engine. The data was converted to the CANbus and read by the AIM Solo DL2.
What's being used for the data overlay? I.e. brake/throttle
I used AIM Solo DL2 , and connected it to car’s canbus located near the glovebox. The overlay was rendered using RaceRender
@nostreetracing86 thanks so much.
1:25 looks fun but scary
Good luck on tuning the setup a bit better. Seems a bit bumpy.
Yeah, I am not very satisfied with the car dynamics now, it was a bit sketchy to drive at the ButtonWillow.
@@nostreetracing86 takes a bit more time to get it there then. Good luck!
I'm curious why you used the lower holes on the SPL arms. Did you want less droop travel / more bump travel?
I would like a bit more bump travel.
Would you describe your car here as "loose" or "willing to rotate"?
In this specific lap, the car was relatively easy to rotate. Not loose, just with a bit of proper trail brake, it rotates. But in the following sessions, the car was mostly understeer at entry.
What’s your current data logging / video editing workflow ?
I used AIM Solo DL2 for datalogging and RaceRender for overlay. Texts were added by Davinci Resolve.
Looks like the biggest probs for oil starve here are off ramp, sweeper, maybe riverside. Were you running an overfill? Im looking to run a similar setup and your lap gives me confidence that my BRZ can take it, especially since my pace is probably slower haha. Thanks for sharing the lap + data
