Why Foreigners Are Buying Up ABANDONED Homes in JAPAN
With housing costs at all-time highs in countries like The USA, Canada, and Australia, it's no surprise that many lifelong residents of the anglo-sphere are looking towards other nations to make a new life. One such country is Japan, where abandoned "Akiya" homes are being marketed towards westerners as low-cost fixer uppers. To help boost the economy of Japan's dwindling countryside, local municipalities are encouraging people to develop in these rural areas. But is this a good strategy to help relieve Japan's population woes? Or will unforeseen costs and hostility towards outsiders make people abandon their dream homes? Stick around to find out!

Why San Francisco Wants to DEMOLISH Its Central Freeway
มุมมอง 17K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
These days, it seems like everyone hates freeways. Between traffic jams and constant maintenance, the common person is starting to become privy to the fact that they are bad for our health and ruin the urban fabric of our cities. However, they are massive pieces of infrastructure that undoubtedly make travel easier for some folks. Additionally, they are extremely costly to change or repair. So ...
Why One Tech Company Is The Reason YOU Can't Afford RENT
มุมมอง 1.6K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
In today's housing market, it's almost impossible to find a place to stay for an affordable price. Many politicians and pundits will chalk this up to supply and demand, but that's only one of several issues. RealPage, a software company from Texas, has been using their program Yieldstar to artificially inflate rental prices for years, according to critics and the Department of Justice. They've ...

The “building more buildings” is bull in my town Elizabeth New Jersey they are building lots and lots of new luxurious apartments only for it to be rented out by few families and all the other ones are sitting empty and rents for regular ugly apartments are sky rocketing

I love how people in the comments are complaining about all the good the money could have done elsewhere when the donor wanted this particular project and is funding was likely contingent on building it. Typical New Yorker complaint that someone else's money got used for something you didn't want it to be used for. Do you want something for free that is better than nothing? Or would you prefer nothing? It's a nice park. It's not bad at all. And it was mostly paid for. And it was endowed. Either get over it or tax everyone with more money than you at 100% so we can build whatever you want. I also love how the creator went when, incidentally, the amphitheater wasn't in use, and then noted that it wasn't in use and implied that it was never in use; I commend you. You deserve a Pulitzer. I, however, did go there when it was in use. And it's pretty cool.

As a former San Francisco, I fully support your thesis of removing the central freeway, however your stats of declining population and declining public transportation, rider ship should be looked at as a Delta against other cities performances since the secured during Covid, which took everyone down. That’s not to say I don’t agree San Francisco has been affected to a greater level, but you’re not showing that difference that greater level you just seeming to say the whole declined is San Francisco’s fault, also disconcerting when you didn’t take the time to realize the photo you showed of collapsed freeway was the Cypress structure in Oakland. The audio did not point out that this was not a San Francisco Freeway. Nothing to do with the central Freeway or the Embarcadero Freeway in San Francisco similar design.

forty year manhattan resident, I don't know a single person who lives in NYC who likes this place. Everyone I know always brings up how much money was spent, and how that money could have been put to such better uses. It's 100% for tourists, and it's really just a short visit, there's no reason to hang out there.

i have lived in Japan for 26 years. These people are mostly going to regret this purchase. If they want a second home, they are in for a shock. In Japan we have extreme weather, earthquakes and typhoons. if you are not here to maintain your property it WILL degrade very quickly. Also, in the countryside, you MUST pay local fees attend local cleaning days, and a host of other responsibilities that if neglected, will have the locals HATING you and that spells trouble. Think carefully, there is little work for foreigners, the pension system you MUST pay into will never pay out to you, language can be a big issue and people are polite but do not generally want foreign friends. Many of the products you want are not available ,or only available in the big cities and cost a fortune. You will not be welcomed into small communities. They want to keep things as they are. I know, I live in the countryside. My Japanese wife has to deal with everything as nobody wants to deal with me.

Though possibly an unwise splurge, when so much of the world is under the heel of austerity... can say it has the cleanest restrooms in the city, as well as providing much needed public space (perhaps NYC would be forgiven for missing another park, but almost any other american city could benefit from at least a small "island" of park, whether for dogs or simply to sit down on a hot day hehe).

San Francisco was my biggest disappointment. It’s all stroad. Unlabeled lanes due to erosion, causing people to keep moving in and out causing backed up traffic. And that good awful highway. And yes, business is great, but sorry, well being and safety Is more important than your shittty wallet.

Agree totally about entrance to park needing to be inviting. Also, not seeing the utility or purpose of this place. It's impressive but pointless. And cutting $55million after spending $40m on this then firing essential staff - how does that serve anyone at all in the community, nor even tourists? I thought you provided a quality assessment of a place with potential which has not been sufficiently realized at a cost (1400 jobs) which can't be justified.

There are several touristy things on the West Side that are a mess imho. Little Island is just dopey looking, the High Line is over-rated and boring, and the Vessel… why did they even bother? I guess I’m just jaded about NYC. I’m a lifelong New Yorker. I don’t venture into the city anymore unless I have to.

I grew up in that neighborhood and think that Little Island and the High Line are both more for tourists, than New Yorkers. And it's also annoying that these projects are placed in what is already a privileged neighborhood. How about funding a mega project in a place that actually needs one? Plenty of neighborhoods in Manhattan (and other boroughs) need recreational spaces.

I live in San Francisco. This makes no sense at all. There is zero way for anyone to bypass San Francisco if they are going north and south or east. The highways are the only way in, out and through SF by car. If you look at any traffic map, this section of highway is constantly congested every day. If you remove it, all the traffic will just go elsewhere and clog up local streets. People drive this to and from their homes as the areas affected are primarily residential and mixed use. Car driving is still the primary form of transportation for most people in SF and the surrounding area. This is why the controversial center bike lanes was protested and removed from the Mission area. It reduced small business traffic because of lack of parking and inconvenienced residents driving from their houses. This is completely different than the Embarcadero freeway that was torn down. This stretch was primarily used by people accessing Chinatown, Golden Gate Bridge and Pier 39/Marina area. This was used by visitors from outside SF and people who were going to Chinatown. When this was removed after the earthquake, this did not affect every day traffic much because it was mostly used by tourists and people going to Chinatown. This is mostly positive but it greatly inconvenienced anyone going to Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge as the driving time was much longer. With the removal of the Embarcadero highway, it took the city 30+ years to add access to Chinatown by adding subway access to Chinatown just a few years ago. Going to the Golden Gate Bridge and to/from Marin area is a nightmare for anyone still with highway car traffic dumped onto local SF streets for everyone trying to bypass SF. In a city where it can take you 2 hours to drive 7 miles from one end of the city to the other, no one wants to spend more time stuck in traffic.

Also remember that the San Francisco City Council was formed out of a set of renegades at "Fort Gunnybags" who did public hangings in front of huge crowds. The thread of "bad behavior" on the city council's part imho has never let up! It's a strange place with very odd Ayn-Randian tendencies. BTW if your at the ferry terminal you can walk a few blocks to a plaque that commemorates the gallows area!! I used to work inside the building that is on the site now. I told the janitor about it and he said he worked nights-- he was like "ohhhhh that explains all the ghosts here!" -- going off into a tirade about how haunted the building was and how he didn't like to work there. Funny story just tho't I'd share it.

Dewey Blvd in Manila (renamed now to something else) is a great example as how a city grows, you cannot rely on mass transit to boost movement in the city. Why? Crime. Dewey Blvd worked when it was built and for 50 years after... but when people started piling into Manila it became nonsensical. San Francisco has a similar situation. Well, yeah maybe. But you're gonna need ferries (no I don't mean gay people) and the people who live in San Francisco are gonna have to be higher earners to provide the tax base to keep everything running. Otherwise... Manila is your template.

We always take the "19th Street Freeway" it kinds goes where we need to go in 'frisco. I never go to the waterfront because of it but who cares... the freeways in San Francisco never worked well and just aren't worth dealing with. Much easier to visit Sausalito. If I was going to start a business it would be north of the bridge... SF is hmmm... it's for old people with old ways of thinking not for young people with a future.

I'm a San Francisco native, and this is a big issue but also not the biggest. You got the video spot on too. We like having our well defined neighborhoods, but need better infrastructure, while still needing housing that fits the style of the city/district/neighborhood/block. All about culture and flow.

  • @donmertle9099
    @donmertle9099 หลายเดือนก่อน

San Francisco is geographically constrained by the Bay. There is no logical way to bypass the downtown. US Highway 101 is a major regional THROUGH ROUTE not a downtown side street. There are no stoplights on Highway 101 from Los Angeles to Eureka California except in San Francisco. Santa Barbara, Gilroy, San Jose (blood alley), Novato, Willits, Garberville etc were bypassed from the 1960’s. Only San Francisco has reduced the freeway flow. Get on the high speed rail land acquisition to improve transport here. This Highway is literally the big western crossroads of the transcontinental Interstate 80 and the regional coastal Federal North/South military and civilian through route. Don’t take out transportation infrastructure. Poor little rich boy shouldn’t have moved next to the crossroads if he doesn’t like traffic.
