4 Days Bikepacking Ireland's Ancient Mountain Path - The Wicklow Way. A Sensless Adventure
My whole life I have been haunted by a man in yellow. Hiding behind trees, lost in ravines, jeering me from clouded peaks. His haughty stride and easy amble, held aloft by bright stick, fully sustained by a simple backpack. I am jealous.
The Man in Yellow points north and he points south. He does so without too much care, accepting no responsibility for travellers left astray. His head never lifts to check.
In December 2023 I decided to finally go tête à tête with Monsieur Jaune on the 28th day of the month. 7 days after the winter solstice. With the sun rising at 8am and gone again by 4pm. It was senseless.
The 130km stretch through the length of Wicklow encompassing the Wicklow Mountains National Park is designed as a hiking trail. It is sometimes visited by hardy Mountain Bikers. As far as I know nobody has bikepacked it on a normal bike. And for good reason. It is hardly something I would boast about. It is not a good idea.
The combination of the this senseless bad idea intrigued me. I had no answer as to if I could complete it. So I had to find out.
MUSIC
Arcady - Toss The Feathers
Chrsity Moore - Among The Wicklow Hills
The Fureys - The Lonesome Boatman
Planxty - Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór
The Dubliners - The Glendalough Saint
Liam Ó'Maonlí - Sadhbh Ní Bhruinneallaigh
The Dubliners - The Marino Waltz

I dont comment on videos very often but really enjoyed that. Beautiful shots, music and editing. Really makes me want to do a trip like that!
Well thank you very much your making the effort to comment! Made my day :) Nothing for it but to go for it!
Class lads, I cycled it back in July '23 with a similar bike setup and found it extremely challenging then. I can only imagine how tough it must have been in December or March. Hope the European adventure is/has been going well!
Cheers Barry! Great to hear of another lunatic going after the ridiculous. Would do it all again! I am writing to you now from Istanbul, we just arrived here, finishing our trip after 5 months :) Will have lots of videos of that!
Lovely Mark. The last piece of music. Who and what was it please.
Thank you :) The one playing where I am recapping the trip? I am not sure it is TH-cam stock music. The one before that while cycling is called 'I Don't Wanna Ride Your Aul One Anymore' by The Deadlians <3
@@bytentandbikethat's the one thanks.
💪🌎🙏
Alls I can say is well done for cycling and hiking your bike with that bag set up in sections! I’ve cycled it on XC and gravel but that’s some heavy lifting and balancing for you lads! I’d say you enjoyed your bed after 😂 well done 👍
@@jujujay thank you :) it was a pretty maddening thing to do. One must imagine sisyphus happy!
what is your bike of choice ?
@@Bguha1 that is a Genesis gravel bike. I really don't know a lot about bikes but it keeps me going :)

How did you do that ? Absolutely great . It would send me mad .

Ahh...the wonders of getting lost.
Not all who wander are lost as a wise man once said!
Well done guys! Nice trip.
Thank you we had lots of fun :)
I'm planning this same trip in a couple weeks. I'd love to see your camp locations in the comments for the trip.
Hi David I am happy to share them with you via email if that's OK? I am wary to share wild camping locations online for a number of reasons but mainly to preserve their natural beauty. Reach out at mdarbs@hotmail.com :)
Good one. Thanks.
Thanks Robert :) You are very welcome
Great series of videos & a unique view of a beautiful route (even if I could sometimes understand only about half what you were saying🙂). I did the Pacific Coast from Vancouver to San Diego in 2014. The coast south from San Francisco has to be one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline anywhere, and I always enjoy seeing other cyclists' experience of it. Great music choices as well - loved 'Gimme Shelter' at the start. One song that played in my head on the trip a lot was Ry Cooder's 'Boomer's Story'. But the track that somehow best summed up the whole crazy day-after-day / ride-camp-ride marathon was Royksopp & Robyn's 'Do It Again'. :-)
Thank you so much for your comment it really made my day. I laughed very hard at the understanding bit. I was scarcely human for much of the trip. It is an incredible coastline that really blew me away. There is no place that has inspired more music. Loved those songs you shared thank you!
don't know how this doesn't have more views by now, you make great content, hope to see more soon :D good luck in Europe
Haha thanks Paddy. The algorithm is a funny ol fish but I enjoy making them most importantly. I'm have a great time and have been posting weekly blogs. You can check them out on the community tab of my channel :)

Fantastic Mark and friend! 🎉 What an achievement to get back to complete the unfinished business 🏆 Such an enjoyable watch and knowing what the route is like to walk, I’m in awe that you both took your bikes along! What a physically and mentally challenging trip to do and hugely rewarding no doubt! The very best to you for France - fair play for quitting the job too!! 😎☘️
Thanks so much for your message Miriam! It was an absolute slog that we loved at the time and it just keeps getting better in my mind the more I think back. Rose tinted glasses! Will be sure to keep you updated of my adventures and I look forward to seeing your own. Wishing you the very best <3 :)

This is gas craic, I'm sitting here in my gaf in Wicklow, scrolling through shorts and just happen to come across an Irish lad in Cali 😂 best of luck bud 👌
Nice one! I just completed the Wicklow Way on that same bike over the weekend. Magic!
@@bytentandbike savage! Fair play, I've yet to hike it the whole way.
Hi, Great videos man, I'm really enjoying the adventures, so thank you for sharing them. Your editing is very good and I'm loving the music too. All the best to you and happy travels 👍

Thanks so much Miriam :) One of the most beautiful places I have ever camped, but in the cold and wet at the time I found it harder to appreciate 😂

Can barely hear you over the wind - need one of those furry mics? Don’t know much about it 😂 Absolutely gorgeous video, an outing I never realized was possible there!! ❤
You will be glad to know I have bought one! I really haven't a clue about anything cameras or microphones, or video editing really lol. But I am slowly learning :)
You gotta upgrade your bike 😁
It was great going downhill to be fair
Beauuuutiful Marko
Thank you Paolo. You'd be a man for a can and a sunset on a beach
I'll look forward to this tonight mark.👌 Tom
Lovely stuff :)
Beautiful video😍
Thank you :) It is a beautiful place!
I want a recording of 'Pissing Clear' Lol. I love that you leave in footage that others would cut. Fair play to you. I did some laughing at this one. When are you doing something closer to home like the Wild Atlantic Way?
Lol I will get onto Leonard Cohen's estate! Funny enough yesterday I cycled from Dublin to Mullingar along the new Royal Canal Greenway. Highly recommend giving it a go I believe it goes all the way to Longford. Really magical. That was a test run for a big european adventure this summer :) I cycled the Wicklow Way once about 10 years ago and to be honest found it pretty rough with the amount of traffic!
Ahhh… so beautiful! My mom’s family is Scots-Irish, and I can definitely see why so many settled here in the similar landscapes of Tennessee and Kentucky! 🌳 And we have miles and miles of those rock walls as well. As a farm kid, I remember picking up cart-fulls of stone off a pasture that we then turned into a strawberry field - the worst summer ever! Lol
That is really lovely to hear :) Geographically I believe the Appalachian Mountains and the West of Europe were connected at one point alright! Back-breaking work. Growing up in Ireland it is easy to take those clear green fields for granted!
I can’t tell you how much I am loving your videos! 😍 And your music scores are just phenomenal! As a former band nerd (clarinet, oboe) and current pianist, I’m conducting here in my den right along with you. lol Can you share whether you also come from a musical background since you’ve got such a talent for choosing your music? I’m a hiker and camper, but these bike packing trips look so tempting…
Thank you so much I really appreciate that :) Yes I played classical piano growing up and still play piano and guitar today. I love listening to local music on a trip. The power of the Alps could only be accompanied by the classical greats! I started off hiking and camping, much nicer having the bike carry your gear than you!!
What a great video to watch. A lovely feeling to it. Ireland perfectly shown to us. Good man. Delightful.
Thank you :) really happy you enjoyed it! I loved cycling it and making the video :)
Planning to ride in May through the alps. I found this inspiring.
Very happy to hear this :) What is your route? I cycled in May too!
