Gene Schroeder was one of my first piano heroes (still ranks in my top five). In the summer of 1962, I caught him with the Dukes of Dixieland at the Grandview Inn in Columbus OH. I was completely mesmerized by him for the entire night. I was with some friends (all musicians) and at one point, we got to talk to the band. I walked up to Schroeder to say hello, and immediately became totally tongue tied. To be fair, I was only 16. It was, though, an unforgettable experience. I remember the whole evening as if it were yesterday.
