The Duke of Derwood invests in a racehorse
WMAL studio engineer Burt Cohen, later known as the "Duke of Derwood", once invested in a racehorse. Afternoon air personality Chris Core accepted Burt's invitation to come out to watch a race. Hilarity ensued.

Faure is so good heard on a piano. Comment? Relax it a bit. (not slower...relaxed, fall off the beat...add a little "luftpause") Yeah, yeah...everyone wants to be a critic...

Yes, I could definitely use more fluidity. I could try again but I was lucky to get it recorded at all. I'm often getting a version of the "yips" these days. When I know I'm recording, I can badly overthink a piece that I normally play effortlessly. Interesting neurology, but very aggravating. I now sympathize with announcers sitting at a mic to just record a tag or something simple, but taking 20 or 30 takes because they keep getting more and more self conscious. I recall Pete Larkin and Bill O'Connor getting so furious they'd rip off their headphones and storm out.

@@AboveAverageDaveSproul At WMAL I only had one of those O'Conner/Larkin tantrums. A new woman in Promotion thought she had written a great spot touting something or other and was attempting to get something out of me that just wouldn't work. The music bed was actually a vocal and had nothing do to with the copy. I told her "I'm not going to talk over a vocal." She insisted. I refused. Headphones slammed down, exit right. Play some more...work on a piano reduction of Rachmaninoff Second Piano.

Thanks. I edited together the video tape and used my personal recordings from the radio station as the soundtrack. I was on the engineering staff there for 41 years, the last 15 or so as chief engineer. Bill had two sons and one of them has many recordings but I believe he got them from me over the years. Glad you enjoyed it.

Me too! I grew up in Falls Church, VA - graduated from HS in 1982 - and my friends and I were obsessed with Ken Beatrice! His show is one of the “soundtracks” of my life. Who knew, that sports radio would become what it is today? Mr Beatrice was a pioneer.

Thank you so much for uploading these guys to your channel. I listened to them whether I wanted to or not as a kid and then teen…the 2-for-the road team were on constantly (car and home). Great memories…and, as far as I know, no other uploads exist for them on TH-cam. Trumbull & Core were the 2nd best pairing in WMAL history with the possible exception of the Joy Boys (Walker and Scott).

Find the most rare, most valuable piece in there. Look straight up from it to the underside of the roof, and that's where you'll find the inevitable roof leak. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine was invited to clear out the attic of a widow whose audiophile husband has recently died. Her roof leak was directly above a Nakamichi Dragon, in its original box with all the papers and the receipt. It was rusted out, but he took it anyway. I think he cried over it.
