Greatest Racehorses Of All Time - Top 10
Man O War is the greatest horse in recent history , His record proves it . Apparently Nimrod had the rarest horse in ancient history.
I'm so glad you gave high marks to the incomparable gelding Kelso. He carried and won with weight up to 138 pounds. He won on almost every type of surface including Turf(Won the United Nations Handicap on turf once or twice). When I was a kid I saw him spot the great speed horse Gun Bow a ton of weight and battle him the whole length of the stretch only to lose by a nose.Only a great ride on the rail by Walter Blum on Gun Bow beat him. I might even rate him as #2 and certainly #3 on my all time list.
Thanks for the great comment. Kelso was an amazing horse for sure.
It is a Great list but it's not the Greatest Horses of all time, it's Greatest American Horses of all time 😂 Otherwise if Australia and NZ were the World then our list could like this ... 1 Phar Lap 2 Tulloch 3 Carbine 4 Bernbrough 5 Kingston Town 6 Black Caviar 7 Vain 8 Winx 9 Manikato 10 Makybe Diva You see No argument about Secretariat Being Number 1 because He isn't there 😂 Just like Phar Lap isn't in your list Just sayin' 😏
Thanks for the comment. Some amazing horses you listed. My list was of American dirt horses.
@brentmagnussen3173 yeah I know it's also a Great List Mate. I Love the Horses you mentioned and many that you couldn't mention as you can't select them all when it's only 10 😂 Goid job Bud and Thanx for the response 😉
@brentmagnussen3173 Besides I was just being cheeky 😂 I knew what you meant by the list...
@@blackrose.9927 Cheers and thanks for the comment!
What was the great competition Spectacular Bid faced in 1980?
Thanks for the question. His competition as a 4 year old was solid but nothing like Affirmed had in Alydar or Easy Goer had in Sunday Silence. The reason he won horse of the year was not just because we went 9 for 9 which is fantastic, but because while doing that he set 5 track records and 1 world record that still stands. He was an absolute monster and deserves any and all accolades he gets. Just my opinion.
Count Fleet also didn’t race after the Belmont
No he did not. Unfortunate all the injuries he dealt with. What a force he would have been as a 4 year old. Thanks for the comment.
Where is Rachel?
She is at #6. She was so damn good! Thanks for the comment.
Smarty Jones.
Top 20 for sure. Just couldn’t put him top 10. He was a very good horse…. Thanks for the comment.
I loved you list, but you were wrong about one thing: Eddie Arcaro said Kelso was the best horse he ever rode and not citation. I’ll post the statement below. Arcaro is best known for his magnificent handling of Kelso. They took 12 of their 14 starts together, twice setting a track record and twice equaling a track record. “I believe Kelso was the best horse I ever rode,” Arcaro once said. “He was Horse of the Year five straight years (1960-64), and that takes a lot of doing. And he hooked everybody, every place, on every kind of racetrack. He just was the best horse. Sprint, go a distance, run all day. He could do it all.”
My favorite horse of all times. I wish I could have met him ❤
Brent. you said the greatest race horse of all time that means any country in the world, so why isn't Phar Lap on your list.
Love Phar Lap! What a horse he was. This list is for American Dirt horses. Thanks for the comment.
My ALL TIME GREATEST list ranked from BEST then descending to 10th place: SEA-BIRD SECRETARIAT RIBOT BRIGADIER GERARD FRANKEL CITATION TUDOR MINSTREL MILL REEF SPECTACULAR BID BAYARDO
Thanks for the comment! You have some marvelous horses on your list. As great as he was.... It's tough for me to see Sea-Bird at #1. He was a beast and deserves to be discussed w the all-time greats but 7-1 in 8 starts is just not enough for me to put him over Ribot or Frankel for even just European horses. (Interesting fact that his grandsire is Native Dancer, and they ran very similar in style.) Also, I have to say as a big fan of Ribot, he has to be above Sea-Bird even by just one spot. Undefeated at 16-0 and running the way he did was ultra impressive from the great Italian Ribot! But that's just my opinion. And yes, for me Secretariat is my #1 for both the U.S and the World. Just to "stir the pot" if i had to re-arrange your top 5 it would be: SECRETARIAT RIBOT FRANKEL SEA-BIRD BRIGADIER GERARD
How can you say that two horse Flightline and Frankel who had two totally different careers, start and surface preference could be possible compared . Flightline race six times and one four grade , Frankel race 14 times and 9 grade ones. Flightline race at three and four Frankel raced at two three and four . Both are rated 140 by official ratings but timeform rate Frankel 4 above flightline , with many other horses like brigadier Gerard , Tudor minstrel and seabird also higher rated than flightline. Frankel was more suited to a mile Weil flightline prefers 10 furlongs . and the comment (Frankel would not come two lengths within fright line ) is is both wrong and impossible to say. So in my opinion, I think it is impossible and frankly wrong to compare these two horses. And announce one of them victorious . Also if you analyse zenyatas form her classic victory was on Synthetic surfaces and she only clinched one grade one with male Contenders , unlike some of the the turf great mares like black caviar winks and enable . so I think she doesn’t belong so highly on the list . However, I did enjoy learning about shared belief A horse I haven’t heard of previously, but now agree he is an underrated horse . And Frankel is better his form is much more promising and shows him beating top class horses in everyone of his races not just one ore two by large distances
Awesome comment. Very well thought out. I will give a detailed response when I get done with current travels. Thank you.
I've been doing this study for 5 decades my family worked at the track back in the 30's and as a teenager I hot walked horses at Belmont late 60's to early 70's started hot walking for Chester Ross and then was picked up by Rokeby Stable via Elliot Burch & his assistant John Veitch (R.I.P.) John had hair back then. So I was around and walked many famous horses Arts & Letters Fort Marcy many more my favorite was Key To The Mint and I saw Secretariat Riva Ridge (who couldn't hold a candle to Key to the Mint when he was sound) all the horses of that era I regularly saw them everyday. Later on in life I moved to Saratoga and in my spare time I started really diving into this Greatest Horse Phenom and I came to the conclusion MAN O' WAR was without doubt the Greatest Horse the world has ever seen. I said this because I took thought modern horses were better WRONG! a LEGEND comes across our paths once in a lifetime and as Steve Harvey might say "So GOD decided to make the greatest racehorse the world has ever known and HE made MAN O' WAR Everytime I went into Barn 43 touched the walls or the floor I could feel a presents call it my mind wandering but I know he's there my opinion of course but there's something magical in Barn 43. The SPIRIT of MAN O' WAR
assume this was just an yankee list... If not I fear for your intelligence. Not only is American racing average in general, your races have no money....... Secretariat easily the most overrated horse of all time, only ran for a couple of years against poor horses.......
Haha.
Won bugger all what would be considered group 1s and retired to breed almost no winning horses.... and won a paltry 1.5 mil. Pharlap won more than that in the 30s....
If Bill Shoemaker said that Spectacular Bid was the best he ever rode is quite the statement thinking he rode Swaps, Northern Dancer, Round Table, Buckpasser, Forego & John Henry to name a few WOW! The Bid must've been some horse
Thanks for the comment. The Bid was incredible.
Yeah you're going to have ALOT of angry comments about this video so watch out & hire a bodyguard 😂 Good luck from Scotland 👍
Thanks for the comment Scotland.
Never heard of a place called Europe 😂
I have! Lived there for a few years. There are for sure some great horses from Europe. This list is American dirt Horses. Cheers.
Candy Ride and Justify were so good they never got beat in multiple Gr 1 wins. Just saying.
I agree. Thanks for the comment!
Zenyatta is the super horse of the modern era , 19 on the trot, and beat the colts , sheer class
She was a beast! Thanks for the comment!
This is ridiculous Errors Fankel Nijinski etc etc what about the rest of the world
This is just American dirt horses.
FOREGO belongs with Kelso in the top 5 not the top 15
Thanks for the comment. Forego was amazing. He really was. And sure he could be top 10 or 12. But it is impossible to put him above any of the following horses: Secretariat Man O War Citation Kelso Spectacular Bid Dr. Fager Native Dancer Affirmed Seattle Slew Just my opinion……
Maybe the best in America but not the world.
Yes. This list was American dirt horses.
No
Ha
We have been blessed over the last hundred and something years to have witnessed so many great races and horses...because of that its extremely hard to pick just 1 over everyone else...as far as the triple crown goes....Secretariats records will stand forever...his performance in the 73 belmont will go down as the best show of athletic abilities ever...
Thanks for the comment! I agree with you.
Dr Fager had his rival Damascus but everyone knows Damascus couldn't touch him without help from Hedevar. I would like to point out that Dr Fager's still standing, world record 1 mile, is one of the oldest horse racing records and by far set under the most weight, at one of the most common distances...and he was EASED to it
Great comment! I agree with everything you said.
he talks to much off topic, geeze
Oh well.
Big Red was 16 for 21 , only a rabbit helped beat the Dr. Nerud was dumb for accepting Whitely's ploy.
Thanks for the comment
4 yr old Fager beats Secretariat heads up from 6 furlongs to a mile and an eigth .....add more distance and MAYBE Big Red wins due to his freakishly large heart muscle. Onion outdueled Secretariat at Saratoga. when they hooked up in the stretch. Native Dancer was under rated
Thanks for the comment! I agree Native Dancer is still very under rated. He was a fantastic horse. For the record, I am as big a fan of Fager as anyone and you have a great argument that the Dr. could beat the great Secretariat at sprint and maybe even classic distances. But in their prime and both at 100%, if I had to bet EVERYTHING i own on one of them at sprint or classic distances, I am going with Secretariat. That's just me. All of us in this sport know Secretariat would have been even greater as a four-year-old. 4 is most typically the prime year for a racehorse. Every American dirt record holder from six furlongs to 1 1/2 miles, were all set by horses 4-years-old and up. Except one.......... Secretariats 2:24 at the Belmont, after record times in the Derby and Preakness. He did that as a 3-year-old!! AND... all three of his triple crown times still stand over 50 years later. Both Fager and The Bid were a prime 4-year-old when they ran those world record times. Because of all the money involved at Stud we rarely see great horses run as 4-year-olds anymore, and I get it. Thank God we got to see Flightline as a 4-year-old. Even he was much better at 4 years old, and he was a Monster at 3. Just my opinion on what you said. I will say the 3 best races on dirt for me are: #1) Secretariat running 2:24 flat at the Belmont, winning by 31 lengths and never getting touched by the whip. Other worldly... #2) Dr. Fager running 1 mile in 1:32 1/5 carrying 134lbs!!! Truely amazing with all that weight.... #3) Spectacular Bid running the 1 1/4 in a blistering 1:57.8
He is a great horse. I love him so much!! He could do anything from sprint to classic.
Thanks for the comment. Ghostzapper was a Monster!!
Love Big Money Mike. Colic and laminitis are the devil. // My 8 week old colt's sire, Tonalist, is the one who beat CC in the Belmont, denying him the 2014 Triple Crown. At 17.2 it is hard to beat his long stride on a good day (listed at "16.3"). Secretariat and A.P. Indy had the drop-down style for speed, like Shared Belief. Justify had an injury after the Belmont, so he had to be retired. His current stud fee is $200,000. Instead of shuttling him to Australia this year, they will bring a select group of mares to him this fall. Saw Curlin in June. He looks like no other horse I have seen, and I have seen almost all the current stallions. They said the same thing about Secretariat. Curlin looked like a red Friesian instead of a TB, legs thick like a tree. His son Good Magic looks a lot like him, just more normal TB sized. Arrogate, they never specify what neurological condition he had. I have looked. Saw Ghostzapper in June too. His is bigger than you would think and is almost black in person. His son Violence looks like him but had a swollen leg when I was there. It was wrapped. The say he needs more exercise. I am guessing your top 3 will include American Pharoah, Frankel and Flightline (who I got to pet at Lane's End, and well as his sire Tapit at Gainesway-just lucky I guess). //OOPS! How could I have forgotten Zenyatta? She definitely earned top 3. My mare had foals with 2 of the runners in the 2009 BCC, Summer Bird and Colonel John. Saw American Pharoah in November. He has beautiful light brown eyes. Justify was in Australia. I still have to see him // I KNEW you would pick Flightline. I simple saw a taped breeze and knew he was special before anyone knew his name. I was going to see him in person since I was in California, but I never made it to Santa Anita. He is the softest horse I ever touched. Felt like mink. He is also the smartest horse per Lane's End. He allegedly gets into stuff and has to be watched. //My colt is on the exact cross as Country Grammer, Tonalist on top and a 2008 Forestry mare on the bottom. He will be large compared to most colts. So, he might bully a little. He was pushing his mom out the way at 3 days old, and she is 16.2 and has 1200 pounds on him. In his defense, he was trying to run circles around her, but her butt was against the back wall. It had to move. Mom looks like Secretariat (double descendant). Colt looks like mom, missing the one white front sock and he will have a flaxen tail, thanks Tapit.
Ruined his career by stepping on a safety pin. That's got to be the most ironic thing ever.
Thanks for the comment!
secretariat still holds the record for all 3 triple crown races to this day time wise
Thanks for the comment!
I went and searched Ghostzappers' Breeder's Cup, and all I gotta say is, amazing...such a stud of a horse. And I did see that 'kick' u repeatedly stated! Awesome!
Thanks for the comment!! Ghostzapper was the real deal.
Wow, Mike Smith totally knew all about all of his MANY beautiful horses that he rode. Total respect to a wonderful jockey. 👏 💜
For sure one of the best jockeys we had seen. Thanks for the comment.
The only benefit of age was I saw on TV Secretariat run in the Triple Crown races as a kid. Facts regarding Belmont: 90° and 100% humidity at race time. Horses are herd animals, so by nature he should have wanted to stay with the pack. Ron did not ask him to run. He was only sweating on his neck and where the leather touched him. Secretariat and Sham were 1st cousins. Their mothers were half-sisters by Princequillo. I own a double great-great granddaughter of Secretariat. She looks a lot like him, down to the round rump and 3 white socks on the same legs. She is also descended from about 5 other of the horses on your list, Count Fleet, Man o’ War 4 times (3 through War Admiral), Dr. Fager, Native Dancer, Seattle Slew. She is also related to a few you mentioned, Round Table, Tom Fool. She just had a bright red colt by Tonalist. He is bred for distance and speed. In 2 years look for a 17HH red with a white tail thanks to Tapit.
Thanks for the great comment! I was just out at Lanes End last year to see Flightline, Candy Ride, and a few others. Congrats on the young colt by Tonalist. Does he have a name?
Not yet. My first choice of Triple Sec was taken. Had he been a bay filly Chocolate Truffles was on the list. Mom is Truffles. You can see her picture in the pedigree look up under Truffles2.
@@brentmagnussen3173I got to pet Flightline. Then when I got to Gainesway, I got to pet Tapit. Flightline is the softest horse Ive ever touched.
Agree on Secretariat being #1 of all time, while I think American Pharaoh should be in the top 3 or 4 not only winning the triple think 2nd fastest Belmont stakes
Thanks for the comment! American Pharoh makes my top 15 American horses of all time. But........ putting him above the likes of Citation, Kelso, Spectacular Bid, Native Dancer, Dr. Fager, Seattle Slew, and even Affirmed, Swaps, and Forego just seems very wrong to me. I actually put Flightline above him (just barely) as well. And yes, he has a very fast Belmont time, but Easy Goer, AP Indy, Risen Star (Secretariats son) Point Given and Gallant Man have faster times in the Belmont. With all that said, American Pharoh was an absolutely fantastic racehorse horse that broke a very long drought of 37 years winning the triple crown AND being only the second horse to win the Grand Slam. He deserves his place in racehorse history and for my money him and Flightline are the 2 best American racehorses since the great Spectacular Bid.
Phar lap is not in Ur list the Australian champion than want over to race in American And become victorious then Sadly, passed away 4 days later. Phar lap
Thanks for the comment. This list is for American dirt horses. Phar Lap was an awesome horse and did race in North America but putting him over the first 7 or 8 horses on this list is absolute insanity in my opinion. But I have him for sure top 15 of all time. Thanks again
Phar lap is the greatest
Thanks for the comment. Phar Lap was amazing. For sure a top 15 horse of all time.
We owned descendants of Man o’ War. They were super amazing athletes. I’m partial to him.
As you should be. He was an amazing horse on and off the track. Thanks for the comment!
If you would have called it "The Greatest AMERICAN Race Horses of All Times" then I would very much agree with your list, but the US is not world. In my opinion the great Ribot stands clearly above Secretariat. After all Secretariat was beaten 5 times. Ribot was not only unbeaten, he was invincible and he got better with every race. It was really a pitty that he was retired at age 4.
Thanks for the comment! I put American Horses in the subtitle but probably should have put it in the Main title. I agree with you that Ribot was as close to a perfect racehorse as it gets. He is for sure a top 10 or 20 horse of all time. BUT…. I still have Secretariat beating him. If we line up the best horses ever at their absolute prime, I just can’t imagine Secretariat losing. Thanks again for the comment.
You lost me right out of the gate. Zenyatta's connections prevented her from being considered one the greats by having her run all but two of her races against her own gender. Greatest mare? Maybe. Greatest racehorse, not close to top 10. Great horses race and beat other great horses, or at least race in open company. Beating up on California fillies for the overwhelming majority of her races is not what greats do. Even her best race, her Breeders Cup Classic win, is tainted as a number of the best dirt horses either skipped the race or had to run on a synthetic track; a surface the mimics turf. Einstein and Gio Ponti, pure turf horses, entered the Classic, and Gio Ponti ran well. It was a surface that warped the results. The year prior, two European turf horses finished 1-2 in the "dirt" classic on this turf-like surface. Her legacy is severely tainted. Don't blame the horse, blame her cowardly connections.
I am actually NOT going to disagree with you. Zenyatta was a fantastic horse but putting her on this list I believe was my only mistake for Americas best dirt horses. Affirmed was a better horse as was Swaps, Forego, Flightline and American Pharoah. I did this video years ago and will be doing a new list as I believe Spectacular Bid needs to be at #5. He was just that damn good. Thanks for the comment. I Always appreciate horse racing fans.
What about the overseas horses. Have a look at Winx in Australia.
Thanks for the comment. Love Winx, Black Caviar and Frankel to name a few fantastic horses overseas.
I am just getting into horse racing, and I SO wish I was alive when Secretariat was with us. He was such a stunning boy, and like u stated, the GOAT Greatest Of All Time. I've been viewing several documentaries on him, and heard he loved the cameras, and was such a ham in front of them ♥️🤭
Thanks for the great comment!
I play Euro only! Europeans run Tbreds the way they were born to run! on turf!
Thanks for the comment.
I guess it doesn't take much to stir up the anti-Secretariat trolls. Wow.
Haha! They can complain all they want. 51 years later and all 3 triple crown race records still stand. Funny they never want to mention that…. Thanks for the comment!
Brilliant stuff, i love your top 10's lists and agree with you totally, i think it would be great for you to to top 20's now and add some UK and Australian horses ETC, sure you must be following Winx, Black Caviar and Frankel
Thanks for the comment! Yes I will be doing a top 20 list of all time and a top 20 of this century. All 3 horses you mentioned are fantastic. Also Phar Lap was an absolute savage and deserves to be discussed. Also Kingston Town, Makybe Diva, Vain and one of my favorites is Northerly. In his prime, Northerly was an absolute killer. Thanks again!
I agree with u.been watching them since 1955. Flightline best since Bid.Arrogate wud b 2 on my list. Nobody will ever know how good FL was, because the competition was not that great except LlG. But he put together 6 totally dominant performances , different tracks, distances, against the best of the time. Thanks for the vid
Thanks for the great comment!
I am not wrong. Man O War is #1. Numbers don't best attitude and if they raced they would each run themselves to death rather than lose.
Thanks for the comment. Everyone has their favorite, and putting Man O War at #1 is not wrong. I just feel on there best day if him and Secretariat run at ANY distance, Secretariat wins 99 out of 100. But that’s just my opinion…..
Really enjoyed this video. Didn't even know til recently that you had it out. It's a fantastic list, and I liked the points you made about American Pharoah. Your putting him in your top 20 of all time is definitely highly complimentary. I also have come around on the arguments made about Flightline. He was just so dominant in a consistent way in every one of his races. Short career yes, but he just seemed to be toying with his competition in his races.
Thanks for the awesome comment. I appreciate that. Flightline was very special. Excited to see everything he does at stud. Cheers.
As soon as I saw Zenyatta in a top 10 all time I knew this was going to be a load of nonsense. She is maybe, top 5 of her generation…. Definitely not top 2… no idea
Fair enough. Zenyatta is for sure controversial on this list. All other 9 horses are not. It’s been 4 years since I did this video. When I do an updated video of this list, (coming soon) I will have Affirmed at #10 and move Spectacular Bid and Dr. Fager both ahead of Seattle Slew. I am confident that list will suffice. Thanks for the comment!
@@brentmagnussen3173sorry what I should have said... Zenyatta is in an argument for top 5 distaffer of her generation... and no match for the top 2...
@@brentmagnussen3173sorry... I realize I was being a bit overly critical... if the video was called Greatest North American racehorses of all ... I think its a worthy uodate to a good list. Unless your position of course is that no European or other racehorse is worthy of the list
