How to Install a Strap Button on Guitalele or Classical Guitar (Must-Have Simple Upgrade)
In this tutorial, targeted at musicians with limited experience in DIY, I demonstrate how I have installed a strap button on my Yamaha GL1 Guitalele. It is a very important modification for guitaleles and it can be useful for full-size classical guitars too if you do not like those footstools and expensive supports and want to use a simple strap!
I show a straightforward method to do it, which does not even require power tools like an electric drill. The same method works for any other guitalele, ukulele, acoustic, or classical guitar.

In this video, I share my experience and honest opinion about the Yamaha GL1 Guitalele. This small classical guitar can be a powerful instrument, so I will describe its features and teach you how to make it sound like a real guitar in E tuning (EBGDAE)! I'm sure this video will answer most of your questions related to this nice ukulele-guitar hybrid instrument. Contents: 0:00 Intro 0:59 What is...

What mic do you recommend?
How do you file down the frets?
There is no need to file them down or change their height or shape. The only thing that is needed is very light polishing. I will publish a video about that soon.
Как же сильно акцент слышится)
That's beautiful arrangement and playing. Can you please post the tab for this?
Great video! I ordered some strings after the original ones started smelling like something they really shouldnt. I've learned to love the GL1 because she's with me on nearly every adventure and i love singing to her even though my fat fingers only allow for chords to be played :). I'm looking so forward to playing my music in original tuning! Thank you very much!!
Many thanks for the video and sharing. It is very interesting (I am considering buying guitar or guitar-like instrument). From what I checked with this guitalele Yamaha shaved off 0.7kg (compared to C40II 4/4), not bad. You playing is very inspirational, thank you for including those parts. If it is possible, yes, please add technical videos, i.e. what and how you changed stock guitalele.
Thank you for sharing. I still cannot believe the manufacturers do not install this pin by default, because they know you so well, they know you don't need a strap. OMG. Ok, end of rant. Do you remember what is the thickness of the bottom of the guitar? I.e. how deep is the hole? Something like 2mm, 5mm? 1 cm? Rough number. I am asking because I think I will install "tube bolt" instead (I don't know the proper name in English, in Polish it is "śruba kominowa", one found for example in bicycle chainrings).
You can see the depth of drilling in the video, and it was not all the way through. There is a block inside, it's probably 12-15 mm thick. It may be different on your unit.
Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks
Thank you for your prompt reply. I was looking at this from the point of view of a ukulele player deciding whether to buy a guitarlele and intending to use it as a 6 string ukulele. I was wondering whether you might use the low G and C strings of the 8-string set as the two low strings of the guitarlele tuned as G and C respectively making the guitarlele a six string ukulele with a standard tuning. The higher strings would be tuned to the most common pitches found on the unison strings of an 8-string tenor. Of course, it might be considered that you would waste two of the 8 string set. However, I have an 8-string ukulele so the 2 extra strings would not be wasted. Does your analysis still apply in this case?
I have answered your previous question using my second channel accidentally. I think it's possible technically because the scale length is the same, so if the strings are intended for a tenor ukulele, they will work; however, I'm not sure what it can give you in terms of playability. The 5th and 6th strings as G and C (instead of Aand D) will give you an unusual 6-string tuning which is different form guitalele, ukulele, and a guitar. As I said, if you want the sound of the ukulele + extended range due to additional strings, just use the standard guitalele tuning (6th string: A; 5th string: D; 4th string: G; 3rd string: C; 2nd string: E; 1st string: A) with light tension nylon guitar strings. Or using a special guitarlele set. The first four strings will be exactly the same as low-G uke tuning, so if you know ukulele chords, you can just ignore or mute the additional strings and play. Or you can learn guitar-style chord shapes but keeping in mind that the tuning is 5 semitones higher than a guitar one. This is as close to a 6-string ukulele as you can get. There is nothing wrong with experimenting but I would recommend trying the original way of tuning first.
On strings, considering that I want to use it primarily as a ukulele, what about putting on 6 of the strings in a good quality set of strings for an 8 string tenor ukulele? I assume that there would be less stress on the integrity of the instrument.
I think it will not work like this. 8-string uke uses 4 pairs of strings (a.k.a. 4 courses). Technically, it's still played like a 4-string ukulele. Guitalele is a 6-string instrument with different chord shapes (unless you totally ignore the 5th and 6th strings). And you will not have correct strings among those 8 to put on the 5th and 6th place. If you want a ukulele sound from Guitalele, just use A-to-A tuning as it was from the factory and use light tension nylon strings, as Yamaha recommends.
Thank you Valentin, I replaced the string set on my Guitalele with D'Addario XTC46FF and it worked. Very useful video. Cheers.
You are welcome!
wow! beautiful sound!😮
Great video - thank you. I'm getting one of these for Christmas & the setup looks invaluable. Can you advise what pick up you use at 19.49? Thanks, Jeremy
That's not a pickup. That's a lav microphone, BOYA-BY-M1. However, the sound is a mix of it and another microphone in the room.
Dear Valentin, your video is professional and highly useful as well as elegant. I will buy this Guitalele and restring with the D'Addario XTC46FF as you recommend for my 13 year old Son. Not only is he a child, but he inherited small hand from his mother (for now, maybe will get bigger as he grows). I would like to give you a patreon donation if you have this setup. It will be a modest amount but I want to support your wonderful music.
Thank you very much for the kind words! I hope your son will love the instrument! I do not have a patreon account yet. You can support the channel just by watching the videos, commenting and sharing.
What is the lowest tuning you could tune to given any choice of strings?
Considering we maintain the relationship between strings from the standard tunings: Normal tension nylon - F, it feels a bit soft but playable. F# is OK. Light tension nylon - F#, G Extra hard hylon - E, E with 6th string tuned down to D (drop D tuning). This sounds dull. High tension carbon - E, drop D. Probably every sting can be lowered 1-2 semitones lower than standard if needed. But the standard E tuning is a sweet spot.
Great video. I’ve had one of these for a long time and I LOVE it. Fantastic little guitar.
CAN U PLEASE POST THE TAB!!! 💙💙💙💙💙 I really want it, pleaseeee 💙💙💙
Is there a risk of damaging the organ with the higher tension string ?
@@3kt0ras29 No risk if you tune them to E like a guitar. They are “high tension” for a full-size guitar. On a guitalele resulting tension is even lower than tension of nylon on a full-size guitar. Obviously if you tune carbon strings to A, like a guitalele, than yes, they may cause damage.
Hi bro, please, play J.S. Bach BWV 1002 Sarabande & Bourree! Amazing jobs my friend! regards
Love this! Just got one of these for my bardcore jams! LOVE IT
Valentin Kovshik Music You can use 1/4 Scale Classical Guitar Strings for EADGBE Tuning because its scale length is roughly like that of a 1/4 Scale Guitar.
Very frequently they are just thicker nylon strings, sometimes with wound G, and I think it's not a good option at all. Even for a 1/4 guitar. Sets with composite trebles and carbon trebles may be promising but considering availability and price, usual hard carbon strings are much more accessible for everyone and, I think, must be better in terms of quality. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to sell lower-quality products for kids.
@@ValentinKovshikMusic The 1/4 Scale Guitar strings have improved
@@ValentinKovshikMusic But the 1/4 size strings improved.
Did I understand correctly that carbon strings will NOT work with the original tuner? Thanks!
I’m not sure what you are asking about. If you mean “tuning” (the way the strings are tuned A to A) then no, they have too much tension. If you mean “tuners” (the tuning device on the headstock) then carbon strings will work with original tuners without any problems. I use original tuners.
@ it was the second one, thanks for the reply. And for the excellent video! I bought one GL1 today, was just wondering how to have it tuned like a normal guitar.
Have you tried the Hannabach 653059 Series 890 Duel 44-48cm Strings for 1/8 Children Classic Guitar? Great video! I’m thinking about also putting a LR baggs Anthem SL-C in it.
Not yet, but they are in my list of strings to try.
I just tried you recommendation of the D'Addario strings on my Romero Creations Tiny Tenor 6 string. I cannot thank you enough, it sounds really good. Of course not as much bass as my 6 string Baritone, but it is so much fun to play. It makes the perfect travel companion. Next time I will also try the Oasis as you mentioned, but so far I am liking just the D'Addarios . . .😄
I'm always happy to see that people find my videos useful!
Nicely played, Valentin--lyrical, spacious and incredible tone from your guitalele, especially in the bass (but the treble has a nice ring to it, too).
Thanks!
Well played, it's beautiful! 👍🙂 I'm surprised to see that the tension looks pretty good with high-tension D'addario carbons! I've never tuned my guitalele in E, and right now I've got Savarez high tension carbons on a little 530 diapason half guitar, and tuning it to F the tension is still a bit light... Maybe I should try D'addario! Do you know the Aquila granato set? Have you already tried it? I ordered one to test it, because when I compared tensions on the Strings by Mail website, I realized that it was probably the highest tension set on the market! And thanks to new technologies, the strings remain pretty thin.... People complain that high strings break easily, but this set could be the perfect set for half guitars or guitaleles! With less tension, we should even regain more sustain... A set well worth trying I think...
@@luc5798 Yes, high tension carbon on guitalele feels like normal tension nylon on a full-size guitar. Maybe a bit lighter. I have never tried Savarez or Aquila so I cannot comment on that. I plan to try those red ones eventually. From demo videos, it seems that they sound OK but less bright than carbon.
@@ValentinKovshikMusic I tried the Aquila Granato set, and I'm very disappointed ... The trebles are not as good as the carbons on my little 1/2 guitar, and although I was very careful when I put them on, after 10 minutes the high E string broke... A lot of people complain about this problem on a 4/4 guitar, but I never thought it could happen on a 1/2 guitar. They're really very fragile! The Alabastros, even in high tension, have a little less tension and are a little fatter, but they're much better, in my opinion. I'll still try to use them one of these days with another high-E string on the guitalele. But for now, I've just put a set of Savarez Alliance in normal tension on my GL1, and it's really perfect to tune it in G! 🙂
What pick ups are you using?
@@xaosong I do not use pickups, I use microphones
Yamaha also makes an electric/acoustic Parlor Guitar that I really like.
I use the GL1 as a template for size for my guitar builds.
Sounds like a lute .. .be a good sound in a castle ..
This was the second song that I learned, following Spanish Romance. I think I'll record the whole version inspired by your video. Keep up with this amazing work!
If I add EJ43 strings on my Guitalele, Can i learn Guitalele from guitar tutorials?
EJ43 is light tension nylon, so I assume you are asking about a situation when it's tuned to A, as it is from the factory. While the relative positions of the fingers will be the same as on a guitar, and you can learn some chord shapes, the sound will be higher (5 semitones up). It will sound OK by itself, but you will not be able to play along with the tutorials or your favorite recordings, for example. Also, if you want to sing, it will be challenging as the sound is different. I recommend buying high-tension carbon strings and tuning the guitalele as a standard guitar. Then, all guitar tutorials will be applicable.
@@ValentinKovshikMusic Could you please tell me any string to buy, I don't have much knowledge:)
@@shubhamdimri4307 it’s literally in this video at 15:42 Just do NOT tune them as guitalele strings (to A tuning), it’s for standard guitar tuning (EBGDAE).

Строй гитары на 5 ладу adgcea такой же как на гиталеле, в чём необходимость менять 6ю строну?
An additional 6th string is needed if you follow that popular suggestion to use the 2nd string as a 1st one, the 3rd as a 2nd, etc. for E tuning. I do NOT recommend this.
Such a beautifully detailed video! So relevant 🤌🏽🤌🏽
Thank you!
Valentin sorry for bothering you again, but can you kindly let me know what the action height should be? I am find it very difficult to play on the 9th string and beyond, my action seems to be too high. Should I sand down the bridge and set the height like a normal guitar?
I have the action height mentioned at 10:17. If it's 3 mm on the treble side and 4 mm on the bass, it's OK. Lower action can cause some buzz. If it's significantly higher, then yes it's possible to sand the bottom of the saddle a little bit. The ratio is 1 to 2: to reduce the action over the 12th fret by 1 mm, you need to remove 2mm from the saddle. Be careful if you need to reduce only one side though, avoid introducing a curve to the saddle, the bottom must be 100% flat.
I have to rewatch to convince myself of getting a GL1 Yamaha.
What was the tune you were playing? Very nice
All the music pieces are labeled on the video
Beautiful and melodic. Great job! What strings did you use? These normally come strung A to A. I would really like to know which strings you used.

@@ProductivePM Thank you!
Thank you for your videos! I recently bought a guitalele and would like to learn a song using a guitar tutorial on TH-cam, considering the different tuning of the guitalele. Could you suggest any easy methods or resources for this?
