November Week 3: Board Giving
Your board represents a constituency group that has a close relationship with your organization. You will want to make sure that they are given an opportunity to give.
You will note that this is an opportunity for them to give. Your board members are not obligated to give you a gift. You must earn their trust and their gift.
But their service to your organization should help you move them through a cycle of cultivation towards a gift. You have engaged with them all year through your normal meeting schedule. They have heard about the mission. They have (hopefully) seen the mission in action. They know the impact that giving makes on mission delivery.
They are ready to receive an ask from the organization. You may make these asks individually, or you may make a group ask. You will know what is best for your organization.
You may also want to make this a peer to peer ask. What that means is having another member who has already made a gift, make the ask to the rest of the group. That donor member has the chance to share their why for giving. It can be very powerful.
The best thing to remember about board giving it that they are just like any donor group and you need to take them through a cycle of cultivation: Identify, Engage, Ask and Steward.
