    • @bridgerectifier7711
      @bridgerectifier7711 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephensmith4480 - I think it was withdrawn around 2002 and I believe it suffered from a traction motor failure, however It may have been one of the few restored and made it to Bulgaria. Many of the 86/2 loco's had transformer issues with overheating, so the best ones, or the loco's that had transformer replacements were saved from the scrapheap. I remember during hot summers, when driving from the DBSO end, we would open the windows, wedge the cab & engine compartment doors open to allow air to blast through in an attempt to cool them down. They were real greenhouses on wheels on a hot day.

    • @stephensmith4480
      @stephensmith4480 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bridgerectifier7711 Many thanks for that information my friend. Yes I can appreciate the overheating problem. When you are combining high voltage, along with high amperage, the heat generated can be staggering. I`m not sure how cooling was achieved on large transformers of this type. some large transformers are Oil cooled, with fan assistance. The 86 was a great loco, even the 86/6 freight loco. I remember the last days of the 85s before the last of them were withdrawn, we still got the odd one working Car trains from Garston. Happy days.

    Caused by driver missing a temporary speed restriction sign - it should have been illuminated but light had gone out. This crash led to the change in rules to using the Automatic Warning System for speed restrictions (rather than just signals) so drivers get an audible warning in the cab

    • @hypergolic8468
      @hypergolic8468 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the inquest found a number of drivers had passed by previously without reporting the fault. As I say to people when training them (not rail related), don't assume someone else will do it. If you know it's not as it should be, then it's your responsibility to resolve the situation (notify / fix etc etc), but never walk on by. I have a number of examples I use and this is one of many accidents (sadly) were someone else would do it.

Years(around 2010) later I was on the platform at Nuneaton and got talking to one of the staff, he'd been the guard on one of the breakdown trains during the clear up and he pointed out marks in the brick work made by the wreckage.
