Actually Giovanni said that traditionally it was women who played the tamburello, but that now a lot of men do. I got to watch him in person yesterday and it was great.
The style of playing the saltarella with the tambourine on the chest is a traditional style of playing in the Amatrice region. I have seen several people play this way, older gentlemen. It is not a newly invented style.
Is the pandereta rhythm different from the tarantella? It looks like a more economical hand movement to produce it. Do you have a slow motion/close up of it? I can't quite see which fingers are hitting.
