Looked decidedly iffy at briefing. Took a lob onto the ridge with a lot of South in the breeze. working but not too exciting. Managed to contact wave at about 1700 agl over the club. Pushing out to Conway valley produced a good climb in bright sunshine!

    Ian - Marco here. Going back to wave at the kid should be a mandatory requirement. Also I noticed a fire in the distance..... I remember MGC pilots being drawn to fires like flies to poop. I'm envious of your winter flying - it's minus 25 celcius on our side...

    • @imsoaring

      We are fortunate to have thermic and convergence in summer, ridge and wave in the winter and occasionally summer time too and almost unrestricted airspace. A hard runway and a good supply of tug pilots. 364 day a year operation, Have not tried to get a tow on Christmas day but I suspect some poor soul would do the honours if a couple of us wanted one! Fires are few and far between in the UK these days.

    Just before I left SA, I approached Karl Heinz and asked if we could do some aerobatics together. I still don't know if it was the scariest or the most exciting time of my life. It honestly felt like we were rounding out just above the roof tops of the old age homes alongside the club. I could literally see the kreepy-krawly in their pool, we would round out and go for another flip and I would see the kreepy-krawly again. I thought to myself "Jesus %$#&& we are going to dive nose first into their pool!!! What was I thinking asking Karl of all people for some aerobatics." . Your evening aerobatics session is a whole lot more pleasant.

    • @imsoaring
      @imsoaring ปีที่แล้ว

      09 is usually a considerable headwind as it's usually a ridge or wave day. I can usually get the wing up as roll starts if it's not already breezy enough to balance standing still. The degree of roll authority with full negative flap vs positive is quite astonishing too. I'll replace the batteries for he string.

  • @TheSoaringChannel
    @TheSoaringChannel ปีที่แล้ว

    Nicely done Ian! That was a nice roll and lift off distance. The pavement much really help get those critical first 20kts quickly. I've never aerotowed off of pavement, only self launched off pavement. I hope one day that our club will consider a paved strip for the initial takeoff roll.

  • @markplain2555
    @markplain2555 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool - 2 questions: . 1. Did you tilt the glider to left a little at the start? . 2. Any tips when doing this on a grass runway. Apparently I will have to do this for an outlanding retrieve on a cross country course. (I guess hand on release is very important) . Bonus question: when did you guys start your 2023 gliding season? (we are due to start flying in Toronto next weekend - April 22)

    • @imsoaring
      @imsoaring ปีที่แล้ว

      1 - Left wing down and nose pointing straight at at a point midway between centre line and right side of the runway. With the left wing down she pulls left before the wing comes up. Right stick and rudder to get the wing up then its a normal start. 2 - Short grass and no tufts. Point away from the down wing more, but not so much that a swing becomes aggressive. Hand on the yellow and rather pull it too early than too late. 3 - 01/01/23! That tarmac strip lets us fly year round! In winter, it's ridge and epic wave to 24000'. Summer we get ridge, thermal, convergence and occasional wave. It's a great place to fly!

  • @markplain2555
    @markplain2555 ปีที่แล้ว

    So Ian. I have a distinct memory of you instructing me: I took off at at about 200ft above ground, I reached over and closed the side window. You crapped on me for doing that at a particular sensitive moment.....just saying....🙂 . . . Seriously I was a student and needed to be crapped on. I'm sure a more 'experienced pilot' can close the window and still manage a tow at 200ft. . Congrats on your success, I'm now going to double check if my flap movement impacts my ailerons. Thanks.

    • @imsoaring
      @imsoaring 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good observation. Actually the air was quite smooth during that clip. At high speed the vent flap in the canopy hatch sucks open and I have to keep closing it. A small bit of turbulence will whip it open. It needs the pinch screw tightening up. When it opens there's a good amount of vibration on the canopy that gets transmitted to the fairly flimsy camera mount. I want to improve the mount but there's not a lot of room to explore. Making it a solid mount risks it becoming dangerous in an emergency. Just a note too, I have my LX polar Vne set at 250 kph, well below the rated 275 kph so the LX screams overspeed a good margin below the real limit. There's not a lot of designed in margin above Vne and the Lak gets up there very, very easily.

    I had some phenomenal moments this year too... it's funny when looking back at the vids I took, my inability to find superlatives to describe what I was seeing and experiencing in those moments. "Incredibly... incredible..." was the best I could do for my first between layers in convergence moment. I desperately wish there was a way to better capture these incredibly incredible moments on video too. Perhaps a GoPro 360 on top of the vert stab? Awesome flight Ian. Thanks for sharing this amazingly amazing experience.

    Hey Ian, Marco here. After 20 years, today I went solo..... I'm getting back on the high horse. Tom (from MGC) saw me off today. Check out our gliding club here on TH-cam: Great Lakes Gliding. . . . Now onto something a little more serious. This wave flying you are doing is over the top amazing. Is there anyone at your club with a twin that would allow me to sit in as a passenger? I'd fly over to Wales for this experience.

    • @imsoaring
      @imsoaring 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have two twins. A Grob Twin Astir rated for aerobatics and an Arcus M self launcher. Both are used continually for instruction and intro rides and the Grob is available to suitably qualified pilots for hire. Winter is around the corner and the best time for wave is over the next 4 or 5 months! We have accomodation available o tge field and lots of local hostelry. Visitors always welcome! denbighgliding.co.uk/ speak to Julie in the office. You could fly into Liverpool, hire a car, just over an hours drive into North Wales. :)

Oh well! Time to put the Solo back in 😂 I wish I didn't have to. I wouldn't put it in at all at this point. I prefer to fly pure or electric.
