In the past, people married young people (today it would be pedophilia) and in the absence of leisure options, they had a lot of sex and consequently many children. They died early and married several times in their lives.

Such a sad story. This is one reason why so many people had large families back then, because the child mortality rate was so high, due to illnesses that there was no known cure for. Even very wealthy people hardly dared to hope that they were going to be able to raise every child that was born to them. If you had a lot of kids, the better the chances were that at least SOME of them were going to make it to adulthood. That must have been one of the worst things about parenting back then -- the fear of losing one or more of your kids to illnesses!

Just a little advice: do not use a metallic spatula. Just a natural fiber brush and distilled water…good enough. No detergents. If you want, some neutral soap can help.

Use a brush, as you did later. The stiffest cocoa brush will drive that vegetation off. The more of the present growth you rid the stone of the longer your stone will remain clean. I brought receipts: I washed hundreds of stones while working for a monument dealer (it was a wonderful job, helping me to pay for college expenses.

The stone looks good now.

The grave stone looks great with your help. I visit a cemetery in my town and see many old stones.
