Big Ass Boat On A Trailer
Sea Ray 300 Sundancer 30' 10.5' beam 11,500 lb
LoadRite 35ft Tri-axle Ram 2500 Quad LB 21,000 lbs CGVW
The concept behind BABOAT is that although larger than a typical trailer boat (it requires a wide load permit) we bought it intending to travel regionally with it. We take it to the coast of the Carolina's and South Florida where we have family
Modifications made to use it both in the water and on land
Most obvious of these is the "boarding ladder" which was actually a "Dock Ladder"
We converted all overboard discharge to gray water tank, gray water recycled for flushing to holding tank
Mods allow the use RV type pump out facilities
Electrical upgrade to 240V/50A w/ RCD protection for RV parks & marinas
Trailer storage box for accessories and soon a radiator w/ fans to run the AC when ashore
Extensive repairs to the interior due to some initial problems, helm, battery, accessories rewired
Numerous electronic additions both in place and soon to be added

This is a four lane ramp and if you look carefully as I back in, the other three are empty.
I chose a nice quiet day to do the filming.
This was the first weekend use of the year so a little out of practice.
The truck is only 2WD thus the reason for the 12,000 lb winch in the front.
I am quite surprised at how many think you need to be in and out of a ramp in two minutes or less regardless of the boat size. Yet there are a hell of a lot of video on youtube with a car or truck being dragged out of the water. People dragging there skegs on the ramp. Slipping and falling. Smoking the tires trying to get out.

Very cool video. And some helpful hints for me. Thank you
Thanks I did quickly replace the winch the original was to small
Be careful…I’m still struggling to prevent the anchor from hooking the winch on the way down while boat slides off trailer I have bunks…,, it’s clearing by inches,, I even removed anchor , but windlass hardware got hooked .. tough to get the right trade off between how deep to get the trailer,, and keeping the bow high enough so windlass clears the trailer winch..
Yes if I backed in any further the stern starts to float on this ramp. Keeping it up and winching down the boat lets it clear the post before the bow drops. This is many years ago now and I have shortened the post a few more inches, gone to a single chock and lowered the winch. But I also have a larger Delta anchor now so still close. I also upgraded to a 6000lb winch and use a snatch block for recovery.

Well done mate. I admire your patient and steady approach, I’ve owned the exact same boat with a roller trailer and over the years found a very quick and simple process that takes all of 3-4 minutes on my own. The thing is people aren’t telling you are slow and etc out of being nasty or mean! They are merely pointing out that there is a quicker and more intelligent approach as others may have more experience and knowledge. There is no need to get defensive in regards to people pointing out that you have overthinked it and have created more work, time and headache for yourself not to mention the damage to your hull during rough water launching and retrieving, Maybe you should take a look at what others are doing at the boat ramp and maybe you will see the wisdom through them instead of shutting them down and telling them they have no idea.. Pride and ego is a sign of weekness, but those willing to learn the correct and easier ways in life, it takes humility and wisdom, I love your video, it’s entertaining and surely gets a bit of a stir from the crowd. Just understand that most people in the boating community like to point out when people are doing things wrong. It’s not to start an argument back and forth. But to let the other person know there is a quicker and easier way that is considerate to other boaters and public using the ramp!! Some people get it and some people don’t!! It’s the difference between seeing a strong man with experience, or a week man with little to no knowledge, I say this with all love and respect, I’m not judging you in any way I’m merely pointing you towards a bigger picture that maybe you can see the light and take in a little bit what others are saying and you will see it will benefit you and the people around you Be humble God bless you ❤
All comments help, however, did you read my reply just two or three down? And many comments are ignorant and mean... they get what they sow. While you are much more polite than many you go down the same path. You assume you know my experience and that I am not educated or experienced in launching or recovering. My first roller trailer was back in 1980 with a 22 foot Mako in the northeast with much larger tides and steeper slippery ramps. I launched and recovered all types of trailerable boats while in the USCG. "look at what others are doing..." I've seen many more bad than good launches with much smaller boats. "you have overthinked it and have created more work, time and headache for yourself not to mention the damage to your hull during rough water launching and retrieving..." really? I have my process, it works for me, I won't hurt my boat nor myself. I take my time, it's not a speed competition. You spend the entire thread telling me all the things I'm wrong about and then end it with "I’m not judging you in any way...". I showed how I do it I have never told someone else how they should do it. With all due respect. Pat
You have a diesel truck you should not worry .l drove up my 28 ' Searay from Forida to NY in 3 days with my ford SUV all wheels drivers
ls this Boat for sale. You did not mention. contact me with the price.
Boy, he's really savoring the moment...
BA boats are a PITA to load mainly due to their length. The trailer is at the angle of the ramp, the boat is at the angle of the water dropping the nose of the boat down considerably putting the bow pulpit and anchor close to the winch post. When you pull out of the water, the back of the boat drops down which raises the bow and increases the distance between the bow and the winch post. I just have a old fashioned manual winch on mine and as I'm cranking it up, I get to the point where the crank starts hitting the bow pulpit so I can't crank it 360°. I have to disengage the handle, move it back the opposite way, re-engage it, crank, rinse/repeat it sucks. I get it winched on as tight as I can get it against the bow stops, but when I pull out I have a 3-4" gap between the bow and the stops as the back of the boat settles on the bunks. This gentleman has a roller bunk trailer so he can leave the trailer much further out of the water which helps reduce the angle between the 2 which helps. Having an electric winch eliminates the issues with the crank hitting stuff. I always remove my anchor before trailering the boat to keep it out of the way, it would have made his job a bit easier too. Having a winch on the front of the truck is great insurance if you get stuck and can't get enough traction to pull out. Using it as an anchor for the truck is a bit over the top and unnecessary. I'm on a much steeper ramp with a 30' boat and I've never gotten stuck or drug into the lake. It takes too much time to set up and take down for no actual gain, meanwhile other folks are stuck waiting that much longer. It's also a huge trip hazard because the author didn't take the time to place several bright ribbons down its length to help make it visible to folks walking around who wouldn't be expecting somebody to have a cable strung shin high across the ramp. Another BA Boat issue most don't consider is the width of the boat. I have to get a wide load permit every year because it's over 8'6", put flags on the widest part, put OVERSIZE LOAD banners on the front and rear, and I can't tow it a few days before until a few days after a holiday.
Thank you for detailed and thoughtful comments. Most viewers have no experience with truly large boats on trailers. In fact the video was made solely for a small group of us on ClubSeaRay.com that tow oversized boats. I never imagined it would get the views it has. I also require an oversize permit at 10' 6" beam. My combined gross towing weight is 21,500 pounds. Twin v8's, 200 gallons of fuel, 35 gallons water plus gear the boat alone is 12,500 lbs. This is no pontoon boat. This was videoed at only the third time I launched/recovered with this setup. I should do update as I upgraded the trailer winch and made other adjustments. I rarely use the truck winch now unless very steep or very slick. The front wheel chocks have worked very well. With a roller trailer there is an issue that led me to adding the front winch. When the boat is just out of the water, or barely in, the weight is behind the axles and trying to LIFT the back of the truck (negative tongue weight). With the parking brakes only on the rear axle this can lose grip on the ramp. The truck's diesel keeps a good weight on the front axle and with the chocks have proved to be sufficient in most cases.
Do that during the holidays. Definitely a riot at the ramp.
That’s 19 minutes of my life wasted that I will never get back 😢
You are an absolute cluster.
He's a real expert LMFAO
And you probably own a bass boat…
Hello, best regards. The video is very instructive. I really liked it to motivate me to have a boat. On the other hand, so that you don't forget the fenders, you have to put red flags on the rails, a strategy that I am going to follow for when I have a boat. Thanks for the advice.
Poor ramp etiquette . I would hate to see this guy try to work the current at a salt water ramp .
Sure look liked a government project.
Wow, lots of mucking around, could use a bigger winch by the looks of it.
Excent Idea, I thought I needed to upgrade my F150 2wd for a bigger boat than I own now. Congrat.
Way too small of a truck for a 12500 pound 33 foot boat you need a dully truck atleast
Another myth; I can link you to many dually being sunk at ramps... That is a 3/4 ton truck, the 1 ton dually has the same exact engine and actually tows 1,000 pounds LESS, can carry more in the bed but you lose the weight of the heavier axle and extra tires towing. The dually only gives you a little more contact with the pavement. But that doesn't help on wet ramps, the rear tires are always the ones in the slick zone. 4x4 helps more than dually .
It is NOT a 12500 lb boat.
The truck needs duel rear wheels for traction without 4 x4 and a front winch
The dually really don't help much as all the tires would still be in the wet/slick zone. But it does have a 12,000lb front mounted receiver winch which I do tie off on questionable ramps. Thanks!
Do you use the boat on local lake
Anyone that says you need to be in and out of a ramp in two minutes or less regardless of the boat size you need to get off the drugs and weed. You are going to tear something up or possibly kill yourself because you are a tragic accident waiting to happen.
I hope i never have wait to load my boat behind this guy! SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW!
I regularly watch people take 15 minutes to launch a pontoon boat around here. Is your boat and trailer 15,500 lbs?
This is why I leave mine in a slip
Roller trailer...jeeze..
Real men of genius here's to I take all day to launch my boat
Exaggerating just a bit? The entire video start to end is 28 minutes. Half that is showing the prep lane setup. Less than 15 minutes in the ramp, including some time for explaining. Do you even have a boat? Do you trailer it? Is it 15,500 pounds of boat and trailer? Or a bass boat? Get real...

Know that videos submitted on TH-cam of this magnitude are for your benefit and certainly not his! Remember moving forward. Life lessons....Learn from everyone and everything. Throw out the bad and keep the good.
A lot can go wrong - this guy is meticulous - he has to take his time getting that rig ready - that is a lot of weight and responsibility towing that down the road safely - so what if it takes him a half hour - For most of the time he is out of the way getting ready - very courteous - good damn job!!!
Where did you buy the ladder? and what was the cost. Thank you
Its US made by CPI Designs of NC, unfortunately they seem to have suffered the recent economics there web sites is gone. It is referred to as a "Dock ladder" or "Pontoon Boat ladder". It has worked out very well both on land and in the water. It does not drag at all when on plane. That's one thing to be sure the hinge is above the hull bottom by an inch or so.
i could have loaded my boat 5 times + in the time it took him to do all that stuff. Glad the ramp wasn't busy, he would have upset a lot of people.!!!!!! Note to self, don't ever follow that guy, use a different ramp!

Also taking both lanes with a winch stretched across the parking lot 😂
@@BigAssBoatOnATrailer My boat is about 10000 lb. Always have a helper and on the ramp less than 5 minutes, usually about 3 minutes. Over 15 minutes in the ramp area. Fortunately, there wasn't a line waiting to use the ramp. I will give you that. But you still tied up the ramp for over 18 minutes.
I'm sorry but this is honestly the craziest shit I've ever seen. I launch my 29 da in. Few minutes. My brother launches his 34 scarab in few minutes. This is unbelievable
Your trailer is way too high out of the water. Back down another 8 to 10 feet….. roll right on the trailer……. no winches necessary.
15 minutes is too long to tie up a single ramp
Look closer it is a four lane ramp
The people saying this takes too long are the same ones that end up forgetting the plug, have tie down attached, safety chain attached, etc. lol. I guess 15 minutes from start to water is just too long (with no issues and your feet aren't even wet).
The tags are a great idea
could this boat have been recovered using a ford f-150 or is that not enough truck to call a boat that size ???
Doubt it could but if it did it could not tow it legally
It comes down to the tow ratings of the truck. I have a 30 foot Doral, very similar to this boat, mine weighing in about 13,000# fully loaded w/trailer. My nephew's 2018 F150 w/ 6 cyl EcoBoost & tow package is rated for 13,000 & change. I towed it a few times with his truck and although it was rated for it, the truck is just too light for that much weight in my opinion. It pulled it great, I was really surprised at how well that V6 did. My ramp is a lot longer and considerably steeper than this ramp and has a lot of sand on it making it much more sketchy than this (I wish it were as easy as this one!). Even creeping down the boat pulled that truck several inches when ever you tried to stop so you had to be very careful to manage your speed (E=mv²). Having surge brakes on the trailer didn't help. Put it in 4 low pulling out, a bit of wheel slip but never a problem. I bought a 2017 Chevy 2500HD 6.0L w/ tow package. It's also rated for 13,000+. Night and day difference between the 2 trucks. Chevy doesn't get pushed/pulled around as bad as the Ford running down the road. At the ramp, a bit of drag when stopping, only an inch or two if at all. Power wise, night and day difference - the Chevy struggles largely due to it's 6-speed tranny vs the 10-speed in the Ford which keeps it in the power band most of the time. But it's not just about being able to pull it, more importantly you have to be able to STOP it which is why you shouldn't cheat the tow limits of vehicles. I changed out the axles on my trailer and installed new ones w/ electric brakes on all 3 axles (only 2 on the surge system). Not only does it shorten my braking distance while travelling, it also eliminates the boat wanting to drag the truck down the ramp since they work going in reverse too unlike surge brakes.
That's the silliest pullout and the weakest diesel truck I've ever seen. Dip the damn trailer in a few more feet and piwer the boat up. Then clip it and go. Then go buy a better truck. Boat's only 9600 lbs for God's sake.
It's a roller trailer not bunks it is designed to be winched, I would be off the ramp by the time it floated and have all the truck wheels wet. The boat is 12,500 lbs loaded, trailer 3,200 and truck 8,200 for 23,900lbs GCVWR at 26,000 I would need a CDL in South Carolina. Cummins 24 valve has the horse power, but 3/4 ton RWD w/ limited slip dif Plus even a dually 4x4 can get dragged down a slick ramp, this ain't no bass boat. But hey thanks for yet another ignorant post they all count...
Never seen such an overcomplicated launch. Wow! Unbelievable.
I'm sitting here with my jaw on the floor. I've never seen anything like this shir
That trailer looks like it’s worth more than his truck.
Just wasted your entire day at the damn ramp. UNNECESSARY BULLSHIT ‼️
28min for a 3 min job
This is the most complicated way of launching a boat I’ve ever seen…
Hi can you tell me the link where to get the quick release I would like to get one for each of my boat's I think it will help me out a lot . I have a embroidery machine I can put the name on the tag's
Be aware of several things for safety. The weight of the boat (but you are not lifting the entire weight it is a rolling load approx 50%). The strength of the line/cable. The strength/pull of the winch. My boat is 12,500lb, this video is a 4000lb winch, it proved a little weak and I have since upgraded to a 6000lb winch. The synthetic line is rated 12,000lb breaking strength. And the snap shackle is rated 8000lb. A winch is rated on the first wrap or layer. After that it gets weaker as the line fills the drum. So the winch will stalls at 6000lb or less. Everything else is stronger than the winch. If you have a large/heavy boat stick with quality brands for this, Ronstan or Wichard. www.westmarine.com/ronstan-4-5-16inch-l-x-5-8inch-stainless-steel-standard-s-bail-snap-shackle-147983.html www.westmarine.com/wichard-3-1-2inch-l-stainless-steel-small-swivel-bail-shackle-583916.html They are available from many suppliers.
That was painful to watch.
Any views of your radar mount? Would it work folded with a camper top?
It wouldn’t interfere with the mount up But the canvas would need to be removed for transport. But I think that would be normal unless you s going a very short distance
Smart man good job perfect
Thanks, To many commenters get hung up on the "time" which most is in the prep lane not in the ramp. And when not videoing it takes even less time of course. About to release an updated version with some hardware improvements, bigger winch and better setup.
Sir you made this far too complicated .also you have help to speed up the processes but dont use them .this procedure will upset many at the ramp on a busy day. Wow what a big ass job.
Don't get hung up on the "time" which most is in the prep lane not in the ramp. And when not videoing it takes even less time of course. About to release an updated version with some hardware improvements, bigger winch and better setup. The point is it is a much bigger boat then "average" 12,500 lbs and it is set up to single handed.
Better safe than sorry ,hes working smarter not harder .
How? Anyone else would be home and unhitched before he leaves the parking lot. If you're afraid of sliding down the ramp, use wheel chocks and get appropriate tires for what you're doing, not come up with a sketchy workaround of winches that closes the ramp for 30 mins
my god buddy half the summers gone while you try and launch your boat...
Alfred might be speechless!!
Alfred is never speechless...
Wouldn't all those keys on your hip pull you under if you fell in the water? I wonder if Alfred has watched this? Wait for it.......
No saltwater crocks here...
So much BS to go through. I bet you get a lot of one finger salutes from everyone waiting to use the ramp or the handicapped spaces you have blocked.
No here in South Carolina folks a very civil. If you look 15 minutes is spent in the prep lane. People are always waved around if we're not ready. And you should see that three other ramp lanes are empty. The whole video is only 30 minutes, do the math. And that's with filming.
@@BigAssBoatOnATrailer I stand by my comment, 15 minutes of boat prep is excessive. Doesn't matter where you are from.
by watching this video, I am much happier now with my 18ft searay bowrider...lol... no sir... this is too much bs to be a few hours in the water
When we launch we stay out all weekend, typically Friday noon thru Sunday. Sometimes even launch Thursday evening.
