Tribute to Gary Irvin (USAC Driver)

Gary Irvin passed in December of 2024. Sadly I always promised Gary I would send him the footage I took of him at Milwaukee in 1993. His rear-end / driveshaft locked up causing it to overheat and giving him a "hot seat." Footage is from the USAC Silver Crown race at the Milwaukee Mile in August of 1993.

This is the 1966 Governors Cup race.
he was ALWAYS creepy and would be cancelled today. he was a real perv like dawson
It was the times
Gary was one of my saviors!! Literally saved my life at Eldora and then let me drive his brand new Riviera over 100 mph around the state fair grounds! He wanted to put me in the Sprinter seat! Dad was okay with it naturally 😂 I kick myself daily!! I’ve missed him! I am an Eckrote… Russ Eckrote’s daughter.
Thank you, he was a nice man.
Thank you for the kind words. Big hugs to you
Thank you for sharing. Merle B forwarded this on to me. He would have loved seeing it. Kim Irvin
I dont recall seeing a bigger turnout for a race. Anywhere. Ever. It looks like there are over 150,000 fannies in seats. I still believe that the reason is that it had still not been established just how fast a race car could go combined with a VARIETY of eye popping rides mostly driven by pilots who are AMERICANS who WORKED THEIR WAY UP AND EARNED the OPPORTUNITY. They made names for themselves. Nowadays is their daddies that made a name for themselves
I had always thought that this track was a dirt track. I know better now. Well, I think I do?
At least he didn’t kiss every female contestant like Richard Dawson.
No kidding. Wasn't that something? He must've had a pretty distorted view of himself? Or who knows, maybe he just thought he was being a sweetheart.
@ I wonder how many times he got sick from kissing all those women. I doubt any of them told him they were sick. They just wanted their kiss. 🤣

My parents moved us from Iowa to Tucson in 1972. I recognize many of the places in this film. Texas canyon outside of Benson. Old Tucson Film studios. I’ve probably been in some of those mines you showed that are all around Tucson. Me and my friends loved exploring those mines. Thanks for the post.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. I wasn't going to post, but noticed the historical footage of Tucson and old Tucson and thought some people would like it. The old service station is still there, now a hair dressing salon. 3500-blk of E. Benson Hwy. (Antonia's Beauty Salon).

He was a bit much back in the day.
tucson was a better place..usa was a better country...people were better in '64
I wonder why?
I find it hard to believe AJ had all that stuff in storage for so long. WOW! I heard stories and now I believe them. One was about the Camaro pacecar he won at Indy in 1967. He was under contract to Ford at the time and never drove it and the Speedway had it until they paid someone to drive it to Texas and leave it at his shop where it sat for decades in a corner of the shop. Ed Justice (Justice Brothers Company) once told me of the time AJ took him into his trophy room where he had stuff all over from old uniforms to things sponsors gave him he never unboxed.
I went to this auction and was blown away by all the things AJ was selling. King Texas Gear Head! The Ford Ranchero with trailer and midget was over the top cool. Walked around with Arie Luyendyk for a while and it was a total blast. Those were the day. AJ Foyt is without question the greatest American racecar driver of all time.
I was a HUGE AJ Foyt fan growing up. I got to see him qualify several times. The most memorable was when he qualified for the race where he got his fourth win. A lot of people were fans of the Unsers and Rick Mears or Pancho Carter but with me it was always AJ. That Texan could move
I was there with my parents as a young kid. I got to meet AJ and they bough a set of 1970s coyote rims.
i saw jims mallard front engine car at pocono back in 1972,,, he failed to qualify, i have only one photo left from that race, it is bill vukovich, leading lee kunzman, al unser and mario out off turn three. about Herc, do you know what year he was driving this car,,,,,,,,
great stuff,! thank you steve for supporting historic motor sports,,,cheers from Italy , Robert
Damn....I remember full service filling stations but... don't remember them being THAT friendly!
Not friendly..... I never understand how people rave about the 'friendly' inhabitants
@@desertdogo Ya know...I was being sarcastic right? The people running the station were family.
I never smoke in my life.

Lolol
I LOVE MATCH GAME!!
it was a one horse town then and one horse town today
@chadhaire. So right....a s-hole to be exact. Gotten exponentially worse over the years
@@desertdogo Good for the homeless and illegals though
@@desertdogo I think it has improved significantly. The homeless situation is a problem, and it needs to be fixed. Otherwise, Tucson is much better. There is more to do, and the road system is more complete.
Maybe this could be restored and lighten up the image better
Where is the sound ?
Back around this time we visited my grandparents in Tucson. We drove in a '60 Ford comet wagon from Long Island on rte 66. I was 4. I recall riding ponies on Mt Lemmon, the train and gunfights at old Tucson and a curious roadside zoo (Desert Sonoran Museum in its infancy). But I really remember being impressed with AC in my grandpa's car. We eventually moved to AZ in '76 but the climate and low taxes called.
I love your Pontiac
A.J. Foyts near fatal wreck at Riverside 1965.
Wicked cool
My dad and one of the big racers backed up in the 50s. My uncle ray Slater launch Murphy. Calypso county raceguys like Jim bond, kingkin cakinky Keegan. Galax county fairgrounds racing in the 50s and the 60s. After the 70s. Pandiza.
Pop worked with Sal tovella I remember them days I was 8 in 68 & pop took me with him on race days during summer break
A bit creepy? Gene Rayburn was always creepy, especially toward women half his age! Not our fault this old, toupeed pervert was sick and tired of his wife.
Hey Steve, I really enjoy your racing videos from back in the 1960's era. The 50's through the 70's have always been, to me, "The Golden Era" of American Open Wheel Racing" as well as The NASCAR Grand National days. (PS, Your video's of racing at the Milwaukee Mile are fantastic too!) Thank you so much for sharing them with us fans.
Putting together a documentary on Tucson in the 1960s. How can I reach you?

From the USAC footage. Pretty certain about some, not so about some of the others. Don White Dodge #3, Jack Bowser Ford #21, Norm Nelson Plymouth #1, Jim Hurtubise? Plymouth #56, Butch Hartman? Plymouth? #75, Paul Goldsmith? Plymouth? #22. I’d be curious about some of the others. (Ford #31? AJ Foyt?)
#31 is Foyt, yes. #5 is Sal Tovella. The runner up in the 22 is Billy Foster. #21 is, of course, Jack Bowsher. #96 Roger Regeth.#55 Eddie Meyer. #88 (blue Chrysler with flat tire at 13:48) is Gary Bettenhausen (might be #99). go to Ultimate Racing History for the rest 😉

Mark Donahues 1972 Indy Car is the best looking Car of all time!
I was there. Like many things, it was too good to last. F1 vs USAC - it could have been spectacular to have it every year but...
I too was there. 11 years old and my first time seeing F1 cars, I think my butt and lower back still hurt from those concrete stands.
