Last night, 31 August, 2024, there was a thunderstorm where I live and as I was looking out of my window at the torrential rain there was an almighty flash that made the night look like day. It was sheet lightning that caused it and I’ve never actually seen it in my 29 years of existence but can now say that I have and it was amazing

Watching this a bit late in the evening and old age brain fog was trying to figure out the loco configuration of 18-8-24. I'll go sit in the corner until I catch up.

Thanks for this as I was on most of these trips so can’t be in 2 places at once. Although after my recent trip to Paignton with MTU engines and MK2 coaches I’ll be supporting the WLA with Maybachs from now on. Please don’t say at least it’s on the mainline it’s just not the same as the sound was everything! Remember the Newquay branch at 20 mph and max revs for half an hour !

The detail and realism is amazing, I thought it was O guage when I first viewed. Just sit and watch the trains go by as they were when I had brown hair and a slimmer waist. Thank you so much for posting.

There was a oo guage railway on display when the forest railroad was in operation. I'm wondering if that display made up part of this fantastic layout.

Crazy to think that these things which replaced tried and tested successful steam loco designs were the complete opposite. Lines of them at Millerhill in 1968 - some only 4 years old but either completely broken or needing yet another repair. File under 'bloody awful'. The class 29's weren't much better. Or the 23's. So much money and time wasted...

As someone who, as a young lad, used to spend a lot of his time trainspotting on Woking Station in the late 1960s, I well remember the Warship Class Diesels. In fact they were my favourite type of diesel. As Woking was and still is a major railway junction, we used to get a lot of different locomotives, with warships being kept at Old Oak Common Depot and Laira, near Plymouth...somewhere I often pass in my car these days. Thank you for posting this tribute. 🙂

This would be a far-more interesting railway if it was set in the steam age with many different types of engine and different coach liveries from different regions. I pity the train-spotteres of today because, when you've seen one type of train, you've seen many the same. Not to mention the far-more complex track compuations!

From about 1968 My father would take me to Twyford in his Mini Van to watch the Hydraulics & Silver Pullman, his parents lived on Western Avenue that runs parallel with Sonning cutting, my other grandmother lived between the Gas tankers in Newtown Reading so this is a picture of my childhood. Since then I’ve travelled the world by train ( just back from Uzbekistan and the USA) all due to this area of Berkshire! Did I notice an extra line in Sonning cutting or am I just an amateur

Is this down to bad driving? Especially with all the waste through the safety valves. I just can't imagine a loco the power of the Duchess struggling this much

Why? When I worked as a Fireman on the GWR 1957 to 61 the Engine shed had sand pits where the sand was dried by a fire all the time. So on an incline the Driver or fireman at the driver's command releases steam powered sand on the rails to stop the driving wheels slipping, There is nothing like that for the odd ecursion of a steam train now. This is why sometimes a Steam Engine gets stuck now. Also why there is often a diesel on the back end of he train.

"Oh my grease and oil. I wasn't expecting this hill. Oh, what's that?" His wheels slipped forward and then there was trouble.

I am from Reading and only just remember how it used to look before the new station was built, gave me lovely memories of watching the trains come through as a kid with my grandpa, fantastic job!

Something special about ARS's. I was stationed on the USS Conserver ARS-39, in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. we went on 2 West-Pac's between 1979, 1nd 1982. Duty in the US Navy was the best time of my life!

There's no such thing as "OO/HO", and the two scales are not interchangeable. This is OO (unless they scratch-built every single locomotive, coach and wagon).
