Altamont / Singers Farewell
The online shape-note periodical The Trumpet published this song of mine and the editors kindly provided all of us with recordings of their "test singings" of the pieces. They didn't have anyone singing in the normal treble range and sang the treble an octave down, so I've added that part in its usual octave. It still sounds a bit muddy with all that close harmony but we do our best 😊
I titled it Altamont in honor of Altamont, NY, where I had just been attending the Old Songs Festival, but apparently the bad associations of the name are still alive and well. So nowadays I call it Singers Farewell.

An overdubbed mockup of Joseph Stephenson's Thirty-fourth Psalm. Bass is sung an octave higher than written, which makes the tenor (melody) the lowest part overall. The score is from Northern Harmony, 5th edition, p. 247.

I found this bit of poetry by Thomas Nashe in a news article on Covid-19 and set it to music. Here my singing partner Jake and I work it out on my back porch with the help of some birds and the wind, on a not-too-cold December day.

Face Velvet Church Daisy Red

For everyone who has been touched by these five words or in some other way by dementia, you are not alone. Here are the words: Here we are at the doctor's, they're testing my memory, A nice man asking questions while you watch so anxiously, There're five little words I should keep in my head, Face, velvet, church, daisy, red. Face, velvet, church, daisy, red. [Chorus:] Face-can we face the trut...

My first crankie project. "Lowlands" is a traditional song of the British Isles. I learned it from Noreen Keene at the FSGW Getaway.

I had a stroke in 2017 and spent several months in hospital going through all the standard cognitive function tests. When it came to the 'remember these five words' test I used mnemonic memory techniques which I'd learned from Derren Brown's books and formed a strong visual image associated with the words. My memory was quite badly affected by the stroke, but when I saw that same nurse about 3 weeks later I repeated the words back to her, I can still recall them at any time, was quite surprised when I typed them into youtube search and got a result this specific. So thanks to Derren, and thanks for this lovely song, the experience of cognitive impairment (of any cause) isn't publicised enough, and I still have trouble convincing people that my poor memory , disorganised and disoriented thinking etc. are the result of brain damage and not the result of laziness or some sort of character flaw as people tend to assume.

Thank you for your kind comment! I wrote this after accompanying my mother to her Alzheimer's testing and diagnosis, and I'm especially thinking of her since yesterday was her birthday. It's very hard to separate the cognitive impairment of a person from the core of their humanity, I think it's very frightening to everyone involved. We all pride ourselves on what we are capable of. But we are more than that. Oliver Sacks wrote about these things beautifully. Not practical and entertaining things like Derren Brown but more philosophical.

Face Velvet Church Daisy Red is very Presidential! These words appear on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) which was administered earlier this year by the White House doctor Ronny Jackson to President Trump in order to establish his mental capacity with the American people. I LOVE YOUR SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
