TOWPATH TRAVELLER
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 มี.ค. 2017
The channel has evolved , the Channel was started as a place to share travelling in a Land Rover( KittyLandRover) content , but the channel has changed to a Narrowboat/industrial history with some travel thrown in. The Land Rover is no more and has been changed to a Suzuki Jimny Gen 4 which will become a micro overlanding vehicle. I moved onto a narrowboat in Feb 2024 a new direction in life travelling the canals eventually but at the moment the Kennet & Avon canal is home.
I love exploring old industry sites and historical places that were once the pumping heart of the British industrial revolution and also military sites that shaped the Britain.
Its a mix of interests but I hope you enjoy my travels whether by car, boat or foot, lets Go Explore

I tried three times to voice over Montacute house on the first voice over....I gave up exterior forces ?. But wow what a place to visit, the upper floors were shut due to a stone staircase being repaired. A great place to visit in Somerset . I hope everyone had a Good Christmas www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/somerset/montacute-house www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ www.visitsomerset.co.uk/ Go Explore

Thanks for watching, and thanks for that information 👍
“S is for stalkers” what ??
I have no idea it's been in that garden for many years.
👍👍
I got really excited when I heard the sound of steam as there's a couple of brothers in that area that mess around with steam lorries and cars. Was waiting for one of their vehicles to come along the lane 😂
The leaf in the timelapse 😀👍
It was just enjoying a morning swim 🥶
I'm only a few miles away and shall ride this byway on my Royal Enfield 350 on a sweet day soon.
Some great byways in the fens, enjoy
I want a small train 😂
I like your channel is the best video in the world 🌎🌎🌎
My Great Grandad, J.H.Cook, worked at Greyfield, Burchells, Clutton and Fry's Bottom pits. He was injured by falling masonry at Fry's Bottom when they felled the chimney. Mother said they brought him home on a gate, he had broken ribs, three weeks later he was back at work! He did a lot of the brickwork underground, there was a saw mill and brick works at Greyfield.
Three weeks later, back at work, wow, I have to admit the Somerset coalfields are so fascinating
A Mate and I traced the Newbury line and we were puzzled, the line was level with the field but there were banks either side, like a cutting. Why would they do that? Well the rails were laid in the bed of the abortive Dorset & Somerset canal, a bit further on there were locks, not as we know them but they were balance locks invented and demonstrated by Mr Fussell. The pits can still be seen, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_lock
Very interesting. Thankyou very much.

I've run down that road hundreds of times and never stopped to think about why those bricks are there, really fascinating video, thank you for putting it together!
Hi Ian, chuffed to bits that we featured on this week’s vlog! So pleased that you enjoyed the mince pies. See you again on the cut hopefully. Helen and Mike
@@MikeBowden-p1r hope to see u soon, I'll get the cakes next time
Or meet at the pub!

Really good to meet you at Devizes Wharf today. I hope you enjoyed the mince pies! Helen and Mike on NB Scallywag.
@MikeBowden-p1r great to meet you both, and thanks for the mince pies, take care, and stay safe Cheers Ian
Love the boat, could be Aslan's kin. Great channel. Looking forward to more adventures!
@bettywales3631 thanks watching, 😊
Just to be clear, the sound of the boat is extremely calming.
When the engine is on slowest chug, all I can hear is the word 'potatoes' over and over again 🥔🥔😀😀I used to have a car and the indicators sounded like they were saying 'Didcot Didcot'. Once you hear it, you can't forget it.
Nice chug.
I live in the area and recently went for a walk to find the remains of the eight pits in the Nettlebridge coal field. I believe Moorewood New is the only one which had a rail connection. The 1929 6 inch OS map clearly shows the tramway, and the location of several pits which had already closed, including Barlake, Sweetleaze and Nettlebridge. I spoke to a local farmer who had no idea the woodland on the north side of the lane leading to his farm hid the remains of Barlake! I didn't know there were Second World War pill boxes and tank traps at Moorewood but it would be part of a whole defensive line which passes quite close to my home, and another one behind which protects Wells. Interesting and well-researched video.
@tonymaries1652 Thanks for watching. Yes, a tramway ran from the pit to a sidings on the Somerset and Dorset railway
We did this walk yesterday😃thank you we found your video very informative
Thanks for watching
Concrete bunker possibly a place to store explosives for the mine?
"Perhaps I should reverse back into the blue sky..." 😂😂 Those chimneys on that house at 18:51 - I wonder what they were for.
I hadn't noticed them until you pointed them out. It seems a bit over the top for just a fireplace
@@Towpathtraveller1693 LOL yes. Google Lens is utterly useless and just shows normal chimneys. Typical!
You will be pleased to see I've updated name 😀
@@Towpathtraveller1693 Yay! Thank you. 👍👍
Hello again. Sorry to bang on, but your channel name still only has one 'L' - TOWPATH TRAVELER. As for improving the channel, really all that you could do would be to upload more often, but I know that isn't always possible. End screen timing is out but because of the addition of an extra bit of video 😀😀 I had a kingfisher dive-bomb me once up the side of the stream, down The Mead (the wildflower meadow as WC calls it even though it isn't one). Sorry to seem to keep complaining 😫😫
Thanks for the comment, I will change it
As always totally enjoyed this as I have walked extensively in this area-Much more to see 👍👍
Thanks for watching such a stunning area
👍👍

Ah! I saw that spring on the map when I was visiting Westbury Station (just changing trains) - you have inspired me to explore the area more - great work Ian! Are you the same TH-camr that has done videos on the Somerset(shire) Coal Canal on a different channel? I think I recognise you from that, but can't remember the channel name now. I know you made this a little while ago now (around the same time that I started my channel) but this was a really great explore and I found it fascinating. Great work! Cheers, Paul
I walked along there this morning but overgrown summer vegetation and a fallen tree now impede access to some of the ruins.
It's a shame. wouldn't it be a great idea to reopen the mill ponds and use them to power electric generators
Looks like hard graft but fun-Well done 👍👍
Thanks for watching, it was hard work but really enjoyed it. Meet so many lovely people on the towpath
Hello again 👍 That is good quality for TH-cam, although I guarantee if I were to see it on a 4K monitor, it'd be exceptional. I presume you reorientate/zoom in etc the footage in the video editor. Definitely an interesting piece of kit there, though.
@philipareed hi 👋 ,the zoom in, etc, is done on the insta360 editing software.
Great video, thank You!
Thanks for watching 👀
Thank you for posting this, excellent, even the heavy breathing 😂 which would have been much worst if I had tried to attempted this! Keep up the good vlogs, ps love the Gardner!
Thanks for watching. At least the towpaths are flat.

I like the sound of the engine dont like the electric ones that sound is more like a real narrowboat long may she serve you ATB
Thanks for watching. The engine was the reason I purchased the boat.
Sunday night treat for me 👍 Thank you!
Totally enjoyed 👍👍
Finally, you arrive, James 😀😀
A very interesting insight into the lost heritage of the coal canal. Most is sadly disappeared now, but the countryside is outstanding. Hard to believe that this rural part of the country had such a lot of industrial infrastructure, along with the canal and latterly the railway to transport the coal. A most enjoyable watch.
Thanks for watching. It surprised me how vast the Somerset coal fields were, and there is so much coal still under our feet awaiting extraction
Totally enjoyed your journey on the K&A in Bath-Also great meeting you today at the Fuel station 👍👍
@jameswalksinhistory3848 it was nice to meet you also. Thanks for watching
Big Girl pony superstar at 13:56! - well, you can see her back end and rug!
Another Sunday treat, and a mention 👍
Even though I know it couldn't possibly be, I thought briefly that first heron was plastic 😂😂 End screen's gone haywire, but you could correct it. Another great video!
That's the last 2 end screens gone wrong I'll have a look, glad u enjoyed

Davies is like Alandin's Cave, especially upstairs. Also, a trip to there can mean a trip to a kebab shop and chips from a chippy just next door 👍
Thanks, I couldn't remember the name of the place ,defo an Alandins cave
