At 1.11.50 a question is asked as to why Thesiger walked across the desert. As I recall he was on an assignment to find the breeding grounds of locusts which plagued Africa. However, having travelled in the desert I can give a health warning to those thinking of doing so. Once you see its beauty you will always be called back to it. Thankfully the problem is incurable.

I live in the Texas Panhandle which is part of the grasslands...there are really no trees here. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the great plains. I thing research is needed to figure out how to raise cattle on LESS land so that people can still have beef but more of the land can be opened up by cutting down fences. Also, I've thought for a very long time that Ostriches should be raised in the Texas Panhandle. They provide a LOT of red meat that's better for you than beef and they take up less land. They survive well in grass lands.

Thank you to Hampton Sides for setting out, and completing, this five-year odyssey to research, write, visit locations, and finally tell the story of, to me an Australian, the greatest sea-faring captain and navigator the World has seen, and given the way we travel these days, the greatest navigator the World will ever see. I must admit to knowing little, if anything of this Third Voyage, other than seeing it as lines on a map. Australia, like the United States and Canada, is fortunate to have been part of the British Empire, especially during the 18th century as they brought with them, among other things, the language, system of Government, and laws, and scientific innovations and medical advancement. It was individuals, many who were escaping difficult living conditions in Europe during the 19th Century that, on the ground seeking profit and expansion in the lands they moved to (Australia, USA and Canada) that undid a lot of the initial goodwill that great seafarers like Cook and Bouganville and Nicholas Baudin (the later two French) left on their encounters with the local populations and land. France could have had a similar high place in history as at that time they had great scientific minds and the support of their monarchy. The 1789 French Revolution and subsequent rise of Napolean set in place the destruction of France internally, as well as created a system of colonisation based on the bayonet and gun, instead of co-operation on shared principals, and that of trade. American innovation As an Australian I, together with all Australians, read, see and enjoy the benefits the endeavour, ingenuity, often self-sacrifice, co-operation with, and learning from, that the Americans and Canadians have provided to us.
