Tesla degradation by battery type and car factory. Part 3 of our series
มุมมอง 1.8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This is the third of 3 videos looking at the batteries in Teslas. The first was a general review of the car battery degradation and we compared the year of production which gave a sense of degradation and how the age of the car mattered as the mileage on the car increased. What became clear is that the battery model has a significant bearing on the performance, and this video examines that in m...
Tesla Real World Range and can the EPA figures be trusted?

Many ask what is the real world range of the cars and can the EPA rated range be trusted. The second is lots of people construct their own range tests as if they are more meaningful tham the official EPA tests, but they invariably drive them in a way that isn't typical. Generally, yes if it was paid for on the car and is not being transferred to a new car by the seller of the car. Tesla sometimes run promotions where owners can transfer it to a new purchase. If you’re buying, it’s always worth getting the seller to confirm as part of the order that it’s included

    I wished i would've known about Plaid battery degradation before i bought a used Plaid with 41K miles on it. Instead of running 9.2-9.3 at 150-151 mph best i can do is 9.4 at 146. I went to a dragstrip and trapped 148 twice but i think strip timing was off. Could be wrong. I haven't been able to trap over 146 on the dragy. Knowing what i know now especially with how much Plaid is depreciating i would've got one with under 20K miles. I bought mine for 68K a few months ago. Still a great car

    • @Tesla-Info

      Typically you're not just changing the account name and email address, you're also changing where it's parked every night etc. Tesla say only the current owner (with SC05) is entitled to free supercharging, it's therefore theft if you try to get round that and use the superchargers for free. Is it possible? Probably for a while, maybe some time. When they find out, will they come after you? Maybe, maybe not.. but you know its wrong.

    Can you find data on ICE car depreciation rates to a similar resolution and segment? I think 15% over 3 years is massively underestimating. UK market prices in 50% after 3 years and a further 50% (25% of new) over the next 5 years. Tesla seems to look favourable in comparison to this... I imagine there is a clear delineation at 4years and 50k miles for the warranty, and again at 8yrs for the battery. The former being evident in any car i would think, and the latter in all EVs.

    • @Tesla-Info
      @Tesla-Info 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm afraid we don't track ICE, and the 15% was per year taken from a website in the US. I think it very much depends on the model, and many makes of car discount the cars you don't pay list, but I wouldn't argue with 50% over 3 years in the UK.

    • @ChrisBaileyMusic
      @ChrisBaileyMusic 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Autotrader prices today 2019 and 2020 model year cars. Approx 4 years old M3 SR - £40k new 120k miles - £13k 85k miles - £15k 60k miles - £16k M3 LR - £48k new 100k miles - £16k 80k miles - £17k 60k miles - £18k M3 Performance £56k new 100k miles - £16k 90k miles £18k 70k - £20k 60k - £21k They're all bang on the typical UK depreciation curve for all cars, not just ice. But critically, the Tesla will have saved up to £2k per 10,000 miles. So 60k miles - £12,000 100k miles £20,000. Which makes the per mile cost of ownership outright, far lower than ICE in any case.

    Is this a symptom of the regions being supplied by these factories and their varying temperatures/climate? China made going to Europe and Chinese market, and US made to US mainly (with some variation).

    • @Tesla-Info
      @Tesla-Info 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's more to do with different factories using different suppliers. US use Panasonic heavily, China uses LG, although there are other suppliers as well.

      @Tesla-Info I understand that, but it would be interesting to map country of sale/residence over the data too. There may be some correlation that goes beyond chemistry from particular cell manufacturers. Or indeed, correlation with better performance in certain climates

      Make sure the manufacture date is around summer 2021, this is when they started introducing LFP batteries for Model 3 and Y. You can check this info with the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) which the seller will provide for you. Apparently the 55 kWh from China rather than Fremont seem to be of better quality of manufacture, so you can go for that too (though I think US sold cars don't get imported), although someone else mentioned that the Vremont batteries in the US simply exist in hotter climates which will influence it's lifespan. The main point is don't buy NCM battery Teslas unless you want to spend extra 10k in a few years to replace the battery...

    • @Tesla-Info
      @Tesla-Info 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I wouldn't personally worry too much, and even if the method below gives a lower than expected reading it may simply be a case the BMS needs help calibrating or the cells beed balancing - both relatively easy to do. Accepting that, there is a quick and dirty way however to see the battery capacity tesla-info.com/blog/battery-degradation.php

    Super fascinating. I work with data scientists and have been looking at domeatic battery degredation numbers, but havent seen any comprehensive Manufacturer specific degradation broken down like this by model and year. It's very helpful. I'm in the market to buy a used EV this year, and had been considering an older high mileage Tesla. The stability of the 75D is suddenly very appealing where i was less interested in it before. And the different model 3 chemistries, not just the model year being a factor, but manufacturing location! I need to find a way to ask dealers more info they can actually answer to make shortlisting easier. Dealers know nothing of this kind of data.

    Thoughts on the new model 3 performance Gen 3? You see that the range is less than the Gen 1-2s ? People are claiming it’s because it’s due to a “new EPA test”, and that the older models would be less with same test. I think the new model 3 performance just has less range and they’re making excuses and starting rumors.

    • @Tesla-Info
      @Tesla-Info หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hard to say until we see more data, but we know they’re using wider rear tyres which can hurt efficiency at the expense of better handling/traction, and a new more powerful motor, which again could be designed more for performance than efficiency. EPA has changed a bit, but there are also plausible reasons in the design why it might be lower

Funny to see all the different kinds of claims people come up with no evidence to support about the Gens 1-2 being the same or less mileage. One thing to look out for will be if they release a new OTA software update for the internal computers range computing algorithms on the older models. That will say all we need to know.

    When are we getting the update?

      New major releases tend to go out to a small percentage of cars and then Tesla wait to see what feedbak they get. I'd expect the roll out to start after they've assessed things after the weekend, or we'll see a release increment with bug fixes for another small group of cars.

    More good info, ta. The 2023 LR results showed a couple of bad outliers for the China batteries. I wonder what the story is there?

    If people with home charging only waited an hour before plugging in, I would guarantee their cell packs would hold capacity and the slower the charge rate the better. Tesla cell cooing is restricted by the cylindrical shape of the cell, reducing the contact patch with the cells. Any type of fast charging is a recipe for speedy degradation, as opposed to those who 'babied'' their cell packs and experienced no loss in range. I have experimented in this area and proven beyond any doubt that this is true and have the data to back it up (no I will not give it away for free). I am at the 10 year stage at present and plan on continuing doing so until I see some drop off. I did find it interesting that you used giant script to obscure the outliers. Can't help thinking you tactfully paced this text as seemed to move around from image to image. I have no explanation for the sizeable difference, of above range data, other than this was all self reported data rendering it as thoroughly useless. Particularly with the cult-like behaviours of Tesla owners. In regards to EVs in general, the data still shows that 51% of owners do not buy another EV when trading in, or at end of lease. Our research shows this will not shift until the advent of solid state cells that are not effected by temperature, hold 50% more capacity cell for cell... and will experience no degradation however charged and can be charged much faster. These cells already exist and are moving into mass production over the next 18 months. At this time Tesla shares with be junk should they not be able to access supply, which is a distinct possibility due to the competitive nature of business in general, and by the fact that vertical integration is attached to these cell's development. Only Chinese EVs will have access to them.

    Excellent video. Now we just need this data for all the other manufacturers. Are the 2022 LGCHem and Panasonic batteries, with the bimodal distribution, the same chemistry? Also one English usage point: 'depreciate' is about cost, but you are using it here for capacity. Capacity can 'degrade' or 'deteriorate' or 'reduce', only value can 'depreciate'.

    The spread is insane. However even risking ending up with a battery degredation on 5-10% after 5 years or 100k is not something I want. We are talking about fairly new cars, 5 years or so. What will be result be if they have twice the age and twice the ODO? I think batteries will degrade faster as they get older.

      At 200k miles you’re getting problems regardless of the car. But yeah you’ll probably need to change the battery after about 10-15 years

    The wiper change is controlling using UP & DOWN on the left scroll wheel, not left and right, which is clunky and can cause you to unintentionally press the button. This will allow easier adjustment - hopefully they will one day use this feature to adjust auto wiper sensitivity - we can but hope…
