IAS is the speed the wing feels as it passes through the air. If you were outside sitting on the wing in flight, it's the wind force you would feel on your face. True airspeed is not really "true" at all. Don't really know why they call it that, because it's confusing. TAS is simply a mathematical calculation pilots make to their IAS in order to calculate ground speed, no wind. Basically, IAS = TAS at sea level on a standard day, 29.92 inches of mercury. When we say an airliner at 35,000 feet is traveling at 500 knots TAS, that is the speed over the ground, no wind, not the speed through the air. If you ask the airplane how fast it's going through the air, it would say around 230 knots for example. Why the difference? Because the air is thinner the higher you go. You travel fastsr over the ground for any given IAS. But as far as relative to the surrounding air, the airplane doesn't know the difference. 230 kts. IAS at sea level, feels exactly the same as 230 kts. IAS at 35,000 feet as far as the airplane is concerned. IAS is what creates the wings lift. TAS is the adjustment made to figure out how long it will take to get from A to B. The airplane itself could care less what it's TAS is. Thought of another way, IAS is your actual speed through the air, TAS is a theoretical calculated speed. TAS isn't really an airspeed at all. It's GS no wind.
