In this celebratory episode of Tabletop Tommies, hosts Jonny and Phil commemorate a noteworthy achievement - delivering a weekly Bolt Action podcast for an entire year. Starting with initial skepticism about content sustainability, the duo reminisce about being wrong. They share tal...
They look great for such a fast job. I'm itching to do a Soviet army but really need to finish my US and Finns first. Top tip for black, try using a very dark grey instead (Vallejo German Grey). Once washed it looks like a highlighted black.
Romania was between 2 major powers, by viena dictate romania had to give up basarabia bucovina to the russians, and transilvania to the hungarians, while still neutral. Then to recover Basarabia Bucovina and presured by nazis we liberate those territories, and in the end of the war we switch sides before russian invasion to recuperate transilvania. So we wore in between anvil and hammer..all the way..russia kept basarabia and bucovina.
Nice tips my man
great podcast ,one question what it the map zose you guys play one the tournament thank you
Be me -bought the armys of germany and usa also the core rule book for V2 -proceed to only play 1 game with my 7 year old who calls it boring and stupid. -ordering V3 rules as soon as possible. -life is good
Always liked the Hungarians, they were my last list in Flames of War and the only one I won an event with! German approach, but funky differences in kit and units. I'll keep them in mind for a second list, an axis list, thanks for the analysis
Thanks for the advice in this video! It can be daunting starting a list so this has been very helpful
Sounds like an amazing event. Inspiring
Great review for a new player, thanks for sharing your experience and advice
Awesome!!!! Thanks for the update. Looking forward to the American and German addition and my dad will love the Japanese and Italian additions as well. Also love the "in the mood" song at the end 👍
An army near and dear to my heart! Thanks for finally covering Romania! I only have one comment, the cool outflanking a turn early rule, at least as written, does not apply to transports, meaning if you want the bonus your troops have to be on foot. It also only applies to cavalry, mountain troops and motorized sections...so not the pioneers. Its a bummer, could have been a really fun rule that would have made giving up the OG axis support/free medium howitzers a fair trade.
Whoops! That is such a shame, and ironic that the motorised sections are slower if they have a transport... I guess the best use for flank attack then is to load up on Mountain troops and rush them forward through rough ground at the end of turn 2, ready for a turn 3 charge? Jonny
@@TabletopTommies yep, which is a bit situational based on the table you’re on haha
Looks really nice, the many many flamers must be a shock to face.
you don t understand this game
Was there a specific idea in the video that you disagreed with? Jonny
Looks Great!
Cheers, they aren't winning any competitions anytime soon, but as a tournament army, I'm pretty happy with how they turned out!
@@TabletopTommies Well, you build 'em with Love and Fun in Mind. That Matters!
A detailed explanation of what you included and why. As always you think about each unit and have a plan for their use. Good to se your podcasts continuing and you venturing out on to TH-cam!
Thanks for the kind words. Let us know any ideas you have to make out content better! We are aiming to have the next podcast epiode out next Sunday. Jonny
Really enjoyed this. Would love to see a video with stills from a game showing the movement of your units with some commentary on what happened each turn and your tactical considerations at each point.
Thank you. We did somewhat cover this in the welsh nationals episode of the podcast, but perhaps a battle report might give us the time to really dive into turn by turn tactics... 🤔
Personally I like each one of my models to be unique and posed differently, but I’m not a tournament player and I can see how having every special model posed the same way for easy recognition makes sense for gameplay purposes. They’re going to look great on the table! Good luck!
Thank you. I must admit, I like it both ways. I have a Sealion Brandenburger army where nearly every model is a unique sculpt. But for things where you have lots of the same type of unit, you are absolutely right. For example, having all the ampulomets be identical in pose and basing really does reduce the brain space trying to find them and line up their arcs of fire just right on the table. Jonny
Brilliant I have gone as Russian as well
Da comrade! For the Motherland!
Have you Seen Bo Mortensens Video "MY Top 10 Wishlist for Bolt ACtion". That was a great One.
Great idea. I look forward to coming dead last.
Great system chaps - nice to keep track of this sort of thing!
I was literally thinking something like this would be cool to see for the community the other day - glad to see you guys stepping up to the plate!
Germans need a special army rule that actually has value. Every other faction has something to build around but the Germans have been given garbage
Really chuffed to be part of this fellas, thanks for the chat with Grant!
Always great to see behind the curtain, gutted I can't make it to this one if I'm honest! Jonny
Awesome videos and thanks for the run down of the lists. Hope to play you guys next time! good stuff.
Crazy seeing Dutch at a tournament, not to mention so high!
My take away is that these lists really show how important the player's ability is in Bolt Action, lots of unexpected lists in the top 10, and "strong" lists in the mid table. Jonny
Thank you sir! My list is a response build to an incredibly stale meta. There is realy no point in going toe to toe at eyelevel with brits or soviets in the current rules. They have advantageous/broken rules that will outperform pretty much any other faction at eyelevel 85% of the time. Hence why platoon restrictions and dice caps buff especially brits so much. Spam and rogue picks are a handy tool against them, as most ppl never played vs eg. Dutch. Also the list is very effective at board control/bullying. The Dutch are a hidden gem of the fine dining world haha
Really interesting, thank you for the chain of videos. I am glad about the result of my romantic Hungarian list. Great cover of the event by Phil and Johnny!
Thanks Manuel, great to see you again and congratulations on your result!
Thank you for the kind words, Phil! Was a fun tournament to be part of and great to see you guys again.
You're welcome, hope to see you at the English Open!
Yyyyyaaaaaaas bring the cheese!
Nice. Next video is how to attach magnets to miniature stands.

great after action report glad you guys enjoyed your weekend!
Thank you! Welsh Nationals and Open are absolute pillars of the UK tournament scene now.
Your sniper mortars were exceptional in our game Phil. Very much enjoyed it and learnt a lot of how not to play Gurkha! Hope to see you both there next year or at the Welsh Open
Allez les bleus 🇨🇵! They were indeed on target, very enjoyable game and will definitely see you at the Welsh Open! Phil
Was good to see you both there, and hopefully again next year! - Nick
Likewise Nick!
New to BA and this has been an amazing help to getting my army built.
Fantastic! Let us know if there are any topics you think we should cover!
thanks again
Always welcome! See you at a tourney soon hopefully!
Nice vid... Looking forward to the rest
Coming soon! Check back tomorrow!
Thank you for the comments :) (matt b)I had a sniper team that wasn't on easy army I went inexperienced simply due to points :)
Sorry we missed your sniper team! Did you use the inexperienced half track to transport anything or was it used just as armoured mmg support?
@TabletopTommies not your fault :) I did yes, used them to transport my heer Grenadiers :) I'll have a look at updating my list for the next tournament :)
@@mattbellis3311 the list fiddling and finessing following a tournament is one of my favourite parts of the game... Hopefully see you at the next one, Jonny
Those are some interesting lists!
Absolutely, usually I'd say that the bottom placed armies are always the best place to find interesting armies, but at the welsh nationals, there were quirky lists all the way to the top.
Great advice. My one biggest top tip though would be GET ON WITH IT and trust the process. Often a mini will look a bit crap right up to the final stage when it miraculously all comes together. Also, remember that a painted mini will ALWAYS look better than an unpainted mini whatever your painting skill level is.
Great advice, done is better than perfect!
This a great video, really helping me work through my 60 IJA riflemen.
Thank you! Good luck getting them all done, it's worth all the effort when you get them all on the table fully painted! Or worst case, it gives you a few hours to listen to a bolt action podcast... ;)
Any word on the firing smoke rule being updated? The current rule doesn’t make sense. Currently if the smoke round doesn’t land on target the opposing player decides where it lands. The landing point should be randomly determined like it the smoke barrage rule.
There's been no further rules released yet. But I agree, scattering 2d6" would be a much better way for smoke to work, and this is usually a house rule in any tournament pack I write. Jonny
production value shot up through the roof! Great tips
Thanks, was a fun one to make! Some great content over on your channel aswell :)
😂 love the graph 😂
Thank you, stayed tuned for surprise graphs in future videos.
Bravo!
This was great; a little history on a weapon system I've never heard of & good sound quality and filming set up. I only wish it were longer and included painting and basing
Always leave them wanting more! But more seriously, thank you! I have dabbled with some painting and basing videos in the Soviets from Scratch playlist. We are just starting our TH-cam content off the back of the podcast and I am speed building these for the Welsh Nationals this weekend, alongside videoing the progress, so leaning towards shorter videos at the moment. You can expect us to branch out into more video topics, such as rules, tactics, more extensive builds and battle reports in the future, so please keep letting us know the topics you'd like us to cover. TTFN, Jonny
Just saw my first one of these in a friend’s themed Stalingrad game.
How did it do? Did he manage to hit anything or set any tanks on fire?
Nice. I've had some success with my Soviets fielding three of these twisted firestarters. They tend to keep vehicles away and are pretty good for incinerating infantry. The 24" range makes them a bit limited but good positioning and moving them, if necessary, negates that to a certain extent. Most of all, like you say they are great fun!
Good to hear. That's the hope, we'll see how it pans out this weekend I guess!
I'm just going to wait for "Bolt Action 7th Edition....Age of Something or Other"
Good vid Johnny
Thanks, the force is really coming along nicely!
I love how many paint colors you used that had "German" in the name to paint a Soviet miniature 😆
I was aiming to theme the army to the seige of Budapest, so by that point in the war the Soviets would have captured a lot of German materiel... 😅 Jonny
